Back in the day, I bought a very nice, very expensive Sony Vaio Tower PC with Windows XP media edition on it. It was just before Vista was released and it had a label on it saying "Vista Ready." It had two CPU cores! This predated the Core2duo thing by a few years.

Vista killed it. I switched to Macs thereafter. (And I use Linux as well, on a machine that is newer that is quite a few years newer than the PC).

Edit - killed it might be a bit melodramatic - now I think about it, it ran terribly on Vista, even after the first service pack, so I bought a Mac mini and a KVM box so I could run them side by side, as I was thinking about switching anyway - the mini was aimed at potential switchers as I recall. The PC did actually die though, and I've always blamed Vista, even if the more likely culprit is that the PEBKAC.

as clients moved along with Windows versions I never had that option.

I was fortunate that I had to deal with ME (and it was truly a mongrel edition) once and that was once too often.

I'm glad to have moved from Windows 7 straight to Linux Ubuntu. None of the bloatware of Windows, and I never have used a Windows version that didn't allow you to control your own computer, especially the updates.

As for Windows, I bluntly can say that 8.1 is by FAR the best version they ever made, yes you need OpenShell to fix the user interface but when it comes to performance, reliability and compatibility it absolutele beats the snot out of every other version even 7.

7 is very good but lacks a few things like SSD support out of the box and several other things also, I can install and update 8.1 still today, 7 needs a bit of work or you have to use WSUS to get the updates.

10 is where the crap starts, it's all in all pretty meh..

11 is a vibe coded mess and unreliable.

Honourable mention XP with service pack version pack 4, yes, that's 4 it's not official but it will instantly completely update XP SP3 to the latest software, it will for example add support for exFat.

If you have a 4GB machine with a single core or slow dual core then this is very usable.

Win2K if you have a Pentium II with 256MB RAM or up then this one will work smoothly and reliable.

Linux, yes you need to get into it but there's a distro for everyone out there.

My problem was a lot of third party software I used was no longer going to support Windows 7, but did support Linux.

That's indeed a drawback of about any operating system even Linux but before Linux removes something it must be really and thoroughly nor be used anymore.

Maybe...I did read an article last month mentioning they were dropping i486 support
(Hmm, wonder if the Overdrive chip chip I had way back when will still work.)

For a 486 with less than 8MB RAM I advice DOS 6.1 and Windows 3.11 for workgroups or OS/2 WARP3

If you do have 8MB or even more than Win 95 will be totally the bomb man!
