General Computer Thread

Oh Tom and Lalla Ward what a couple? She was gorgeous. But I was partial to Mary Tamm.

Hey odd one here I just set up a wireless mouse, it worked badly in one USB port and then I swapped ports and now it's working fine. No idea why a different port would have made any difference but there you go.

Has anyone ever checked out JonnyGuru for PSU tests? http://www.jonnyguru.com/ Definitely helped me three years ago for my last tower build.

JonnyGuru always makes good reviews, also TechPowerUp is doing great work with testing PSU's https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/
I usually use these sites and others to see if components meet my requirements.
Of course common sense also helps, when it seems to be good to be true it usually is in the land of hardware.

OK quirky issue here.

I just hooked up my laptop to my monitor and oh joy it's beautiful. Still 1366x768 as that was the laptops default resolution but on my big monitor it looks way more beautiful then the laptop screen due to better quality.

However my screen has a native resolution of 1920x1080

Changed that in Windows and the screen changed but also the laptop screen changed to reflect this change, yet in its default state it can't go beyond 1366x768 so how was it able to flip over now?

I wish I could force it to go that way without the HDMI cable and other screen but it won't let me.

I'm on windows 7, and I totally can... Control panel, appearance and personalization, screen resolution, which I have no idea is still true of windows 10.

Obviously the two features fight each other trying to control your screen rez, but one will win out, even though i have no idea which.

No that was way too much functionality.

They removed that from explorer in Windows 10 because why the hell not remove good things hey?

So yeah despite the laptop saying it won't go beyond 1366x768 whenever I plug in my monitor it does it anyway, weird still that the laptop screen changes despite it in theory not being able to.

I think you're mistaken

Windows can drive two different displays at two different resolutions even with Windows 10. Until june I as running a 24inch monitor at 1920x1080 and a 22" at 1650x1080.

But it won't run a panel above it's capabilities. I suspect because you've got the second monitor plugged in, Windows is showing the resolution for that display. If you chose the laptop display in the settings you'd see the 1380x768

Ah........... OK because it looked like Windows was mimicking the external monitor on the laptop screen so that's why I wondered if that was overriding the setting limits.

Thanks Marc

I'm having an odd problem that I've never encountered before with Mac OS' Spotlight function. It's basically like a quick and useful search feature, and while I don't use it regularly, it's handy. Today I noticed a problem where if I try to type in certain search terms (like the word "numbers" for example), it automatically quits after only registering two letters. It doesn't necessarily have this issue with some other terms of similar or different length, but I don't know what's causing it. Any suggestions?

ETA: Some people online have recommended closing anything related to Spotlight through the Activity Monitor, but for some reason I can't seem to do that. I can tell it to quit but it won't. :/

Wished I could help you with that, I have no knowledge of Mac OS though, I know it is based on BSD so maybe check if you have enough rights to be able to start/stop stuff in that activity monitor, that is all I can think off.

I've gotten the impression that you can't really alter the main app that way (which makes sense, but I've never had to look at it before now :p). I've seen several recommended fixes but so far none has worked for me.

Keeping Win 7 up to date has become quite a hassle, since M$ has switched to cummulative updates they always ship those f#cking soyware patches with them.. takes me an hour to cleanup the mess $pycro$oft makes evertime.. even worse is that I've got quite a few of those 7 machines around..

I have an unusual problem.

I have a USB 3.0 enclosure for a 2.5 inch drive now in that enclosure is a Sandisk 125 gigabyte SSD and it's working fine. I recently removed that however and swapped it with a Samsung 850 evo 500gig drive but windows won't recognise the enclosure with that drive in it, but if I put the old one back it works fine.

SSD's don't have the same controllers, can be that the Evo is simply not compatible with the enclosure, also could be the size of the drive which makes it incompatible with the enclusure and there are probably a lot more reasons why the damn thing won't work..

I figured it was something like that. I am trying another enclosure that I ordered online.

BTW I'm removing the screen of one of my laptops and using that as a desktop with my existing monitor while I take a break from my actual desktop machine because it has too many distractions onboard that are causing problems.

This is NOT good. Microsoft's new October update can cause people to lose their data! I'm so glad I added that batch file to my laptop earlier this year. Still backing up my laptop this weekend though to be on the safe side.

Yep. Read that and immediately made a disk image of my HDD. I already do standard backups where my files are concerned, but I just installed Windows 10 and all of my programs on this new system, and like crap if I want to do that again a few days later because Windows 10 decides to go Mr. Clean on me.

Word. Definitely. I have too much on my laptop that I want to keep and/or is hard to find and I'd hate to see MS delete it.

I just switched away from a Mac (not so much by choice, really), and I said to myself that at least Windows 10 is pretty stable. Of course Microsoft would go and prove me wrong out of spite.
