Galen Marek: Star Wars' Ultimate Mary Sue?

When I first saw the thread title, I thought "who?"

For all the effort they put into making Starkiller badass, I would think they'd give him a better name.

Yeah, everyone knows that Vader was actually defeated by Amber Marissa Flores Picard.

AKA Galen Marek in drag.

It's a textbook Mary-Sue naming tactic: i.e. use a first name of a famous person from history (the original Galen was a VERY amazing person from ancient Greece), and slap on a popular common last name (Marek" is #6801 of 88,701 common last names).

It's rather telling, that Mary-Sue names = lazy + egotistical.

And she'd carve "I lost to a bunch of kids" on his ship with her phasers just for bonus shame points.
Is that character a parody? Seriously, I'm asking; when the fanfic is that bad, it's hard to tell.
By and large, no, the Marissa stories weren't intended by Stephen Ratliff to be parodies.

It's hard to believe... first he puts a bunch of kids in charge as superior to adults, then uses that fact to diss the bad guys, saying "I lost to a bunch of kids," indicating that kids are weak.

This person Ratliff seems rather undecided about his convictions... similar to Galen Marek, who comes to the "realization" that "good and evil are just points of view" or something similar. I guess great minds think alike :D

Knowing Lucas and his attitude towards the Star Wars Expanded Universe, it's possible that the live-action show-if it ever gets made-will retcon/ override the character. The Lucas-produced "Clone Wars" for instance has basically wiped out the continuity of the novels/comics/original animated series.

Then again, Lucas did have some input into the game itself.

I don't like how it messes with the continuity of the films.

For instance

-Vader and Palpatine sort of forming the Rebel Alliance. OK, so his trap in ROTJ made sense, and to a degree also the Clone Wars. But seriously, the Rebel alliance?

-Having Vader having an apprentice before the OT takes away from the importance of Luke.

Actually Lucas says that the EU is a separate universe, so everything's hunk-dory over in that "anything goes" place (see canonwars.com .
AFAIK, the only consistency is that they avoid re-using names- that's the only thing that "The Holocron" database is for; so basically if Lucas doesn't use this character in some live-action production, then we'll never see a character on the movies or TCW named "Galen Marek" (thank goodness!)

And yet as far as the character goes (minus some of the inane 'super' force powers and the contrived circumstances they kept writing for him), I still like Starkiller a good bit more than half the other Marys strewn throughout both Wars and Trek alike - not to mention the prequels' bastardisation of Anakin Skywalker...

"And I would have gotten away with it too, if not for those meddling kids!" :D

You know what really grinds my gears?

The Rebel Alliance seal is apparently the Marek family emblem or some shit like that.

"We will honor this generic bald stone-faced video game protaganist by adopting his badass symbol, yo."

Of course, I can just ignore it. It's my prerogative as a whiny fanboy.

Others have been talking, and it seems largely agreed that Lucas has lost all touch with both the original Star Wars concept, and with reality in general.

So we get TFU and The Clone Wars, each of which features a Mary Sue that pretty much contradicts the rest of the canon.
For example, in RotJ we hear Obi-Wan and Anakin talking about how he saved Obi-wan's life 9 times-- but no mention of Ahsoka Tano; likewise in the original trilogy there's no mention of Galen Marek, when it would seem appropriate.

In other words, Lucas is retconning like never before... badly.

Sadly, it seems that it was stolen from Wing Commander, specifically a Kilrathi ace-pilot named "Bhurak Starkiller."

Actually, Lucas initially was going to name the main character of his Star Wars saga Luke Starkiller before he changed it to Skywalker, so it's more of a theft from his earlier self. Also, I'm guessing he had nothing to do with this game or character, so it was Haden Blackman probably using unused Lucas material from 1975.

Yeah, they just borrowed the name from Lucas' original drafts after he decided not to use it.

Wow, some people will go to any lengths to bash something they don't like.

He is said to have vetoed some of the more inappropriate ideas they had, like a Mace Force ghost or an appearance by Darth Plagueis.

All we have is "there will be no one to stop us this time."

Still, it's better than what Lucas has sunk to... although "Galen Skywalker" would have had "Mary Sue" written all over it at this point-- ala "Marissa Picard," as if the name "Marissa" doesn't sound like "Mary Sue" right there!

D'ya think it was an intentional epithet? Or just a poetic irony?

Edit: I thought Sith-names were supposed to be cruel-sounding, like "Maul" or "Sidious" or "Tyranis" etc.

"Starkiller" just sounds like a tabloid-journalist with few scruples.

It's not a Sith name, because he's not actually a Sith. He's not Darth Starkiller.

Ok, so now we're to believe that Darth Vader took him on as a Sith-apprentice, but didn't give him a Sith-name?
Wow, this just keeps on getting better and better! :guffaw:

I think he was sort of a possible sith (or "Dark Jedi"), kind of like Ventress or Savage Opress from the Clone Wars (or even Luke in the OT, or Mara Jade in the Zahn books). Vader was still the apprentice to Palpatine's master. The Expanded material, including "Clone Wars" frequently has Sith 'apprentices' take Dark jedi adepts that their masters are aware of, but there can only be two sith. Of course if the apprentice becomes the Master, the adept can become a Sith apprentice. Likewise, the Master can replace an apprentice, as we saw with Palpatine do with Maul, Dooku, and (almost) Vader.

Makes you wonder, what would Luke's Darth title be?
