Future of Paramount includes Star Trek tentpole

I think only Sony has it worse.

For 2017 yes. The Studio Market Share /Box Office so far is:

1 Buena Vista (Disney) 24.2%
2 Universal 17.3%
3 Warner Bros. 15.9%
4 20th Century Fox 15.2%
5 Lionsgate 8.7%
6 Paramount 5.9%
7 Sony / Columbia 3.6%

But for the whole year of 2016 the market share was:

1 Buena Vista (Disney) 26.3%
2 Warner Bros. 16.7%
3 20th Century Fox 12.9%
4 Universal 12.4%
5 Sony / Columbia 8.0%
6 Paramount 7.7%
7 Lionsgate 5.8%

And the 2015 box office market share:

1 Universal 21.3%
2 Buena Vista (Disney) 19.8%
3 Warner Bros. 13.9%
4 20th Century Fox 11.3%
5 Sony / Columbia 8.4%
6 Paramount 5.9%
7 Lionsgate 5.9%

It goes on like this with 6th and even 7th places for Paramount. The last time Paramount was in the studio Top-5 was in 2011, but with the no.1 place! Viacom's execs should be thinking what the heck happened since then.

I don't know what Paramount is going to do. Like you said, just about every movie Paramount has released in the last year and a half has underperformed or flopped. Star Trek and Transformers were safe bets, but after Beyond and TF5, it looks like it's down to Mission Impossible 6 to save this studio.

I think only Sony has it worse.
Paramount needs Trek 4 to hit as big as STID but on a reduced budget (130-150m) . maybe its time to pair up the JJcrew with Picard/TNG?

As much as I'd be there on opening night, that's a big risk for the franchise considering the box office performance of the TNG movies. I think one more go with the current cast then it's game over I feel. Unless a fourth one does well of course.

It could work though. I know I'd probably enjoy it. It would have to go all out, borg, the works.

wow its going to fall way short of STBs 158m domestic take, and looking like it will struggle to make it to 600m ww!

DAMN, SON!
What happened? Looks like it's down to Mission Impossible 6 to save this studio.

So much for being critic proof.
I think the audience has just had enough of what Paramount was shoveling. The previous TF movies all had good action and scenes to keep the audience engaged. TF5 didn't even have that.

It has gone very quiet on the movie franchise front. There is a panel discussion at the San Diego comic con about the future of the franchise which will have something to say about the movies. It will be probably a critical assessment of the Kelvin Universe films and speculation on the future. There isn't a good time for releasing a fourth Star Trek movie in the summer or winter for the next three or four years - there will be bigger and more profitable franchise tent poles in those seasons.

Tom Cruise has been striking out with his last two films, The Mummy and Jack Reacher sequel. He has a film coming out in the fall. It could be a hit or it could another strike out. Two bad films - bad run. Three bad films - a matter of concern - is the audience tiring of him? Then, Mission Impossible.

There have been many movies which never went further than the script wriitng stage.

Looking at the 2020 release schedule, the summer is packed with heavy hitters, including the fifth Indiana Jones film. Winter looks better - the biggest film then is Avatar 2. A film where the first film came out eleven years earlier. Cameron keeps dragging it out and the release date is probably a soft release date.

Another 4 year gap is too long (and Trek shouldn't be anywhere near Avatar).. Dec 2019 looks the best time (not summer as SW9)

I hope they do start a 4th one, but I wouldn't take a random actor's word on it. If it were Chris Pine or Zach Quinto, I might believe it more. Sounds like Deep Roy was just spit balling it.

Mission Impossible, Transformers and Star Trek are the only big name IPs Paramount has. TF5 underperformed on it's own merits. Star Trek wasn't promoted anywhere near it needed to be for it's 13th movie and 50th anniversary. Hell, most people I know who are Trekkies didn't even know there was a Trek movie released last year. Mission Impossible 6 has a lot riding on it.

Quinto did say they were writing the script for Trek 4 (14) in link Contained in Khan 2.0 post today at 8:15 AM above
