For whom would you name a Starfleet ship?

I'll be patriotic.

Scientists:
USS Giordano Bruno (philosopher and cosmologist)
USS Enrico Fermi (physicist)
USS Riccardo Giacconi (astrophysicist)
USS Beppo Occhialini (physicist)
USS Carlo Rubbia (physicist)
USS Rita Levi-Montalcini (neurologist)
USS Guglielmo Marconi (inventor)
USS Antonio Meucci (inventor)

What, no Gaetano Arturo Crocco or Giuseppe Colombo? The astrodynamicist in me is offended! ;)

There's also the astronomer Paolo Chiavenna, who's discovered around 15 asteroids.

Being an American post-2003, I don't feel like casting any stones at Germans, at least those like Rommel and Guderian who weren't members of the Nazi party.

*Weren't*?

And even if they weren't, technically, members of the actual party, they openly and willfully supported the Nazi government, so I'm not convinced there's an effective difference.

Thats almost like saying Patton or McArthur willfully supported all elements of Roosevelts Democratic party because they were in power. They most certainly didnt. But I am glad to see there is support in naming ships after German generals who were brilliant tacticians.

After my favourite writers:

Stephen King - yes, I'm serious. He wrote the Dark Tower series. Changed my life.

Margaret Atwood- oh, Alias Grace, Lady Oracle and The Robber Bride!

Thomas Mann- Die Buddenbrooks.

Oh, and Goethe and Schiller, of course.

Yep, that's it. I'd be on the USS Stephen King, I suppose, but only if the captain's name was Roland Deschain. It would surely be haunted and a little creepy, but fun. And in the end, everyone would die. Or something like that.

I would name the ship *after* Roland. :)

(seriously though, USS Deschain does have a nice ring to it.)

Other ideas - naming ships after my favorite bands:

USS Kraftwerk
USS Cocteau (as in Twins)
USS Alan Parsons
USS Tearwave <-- I really like that one. :)
USS Love Spirals Downwards

To be fair, Erwin Rommel was forced by Hitler to commit suicide because he was suspected of knowing about the July 20 Plot to kill Hitler and overthrow the Nazi government and not telling the Nazis about it.

Speaking of which, I recall a U.S.S. Patton in FASA's Star Trek RPG, and in Star Fleet Battles the U.S.S. MacArthur was a fleet carrier, a vessel slightly smaller than MacArthur's ego. :D

And Guderian was sacked. But maybe this should get taken to PM before it derails the thread.

There's a parallel thread at the Tech forum that concentrates a bit more on what Starfleet actually would or wouldn't do with ship naming. The potential mudslinging could perhaps be channeled to such argumentation here as well.

Just having been in service of an oppressive government isn't grounds for suspension in Starfleet. General Zhukov is rightfully credited for his tactical, strategic and logistical victories, although it is a matter of opinion whether his anti-Stalinist leanings ever made him any better than Stalin himself. The German city of Emden gets mention apparently thanks to having two German ships named after it, even though the first was an evil pirate vessel preying on merchant shipping for Wilhelm II, and the second did nothing much for Hitler - but the first Emden certainly performed heroically in her sinister role, and deserves mention at least as much as that other filthy pirate, Sir Francis Drake.

Generally speaking, would the folks in the 24th century really have high passions about which 20th century or earlier ideology a particular heroic officer or vessel supported or opposed? They apparently loathe all those ideologies in equal measure, at least if the Q-Picard dialogue in "Encounter at Farpoint" is any indication.

For my patriotic contribution, I choose to skip military heroes or vessels, and instead offer the names of our icebreaker fleet for use (omitting recent, uninteresting names such as Arctica or Fennica). Many of these names are synonyms for "Bear" or "Strength":

Otso
Kontio
Voima
Tarmo
Apu
Varma
Sisu
Sampo
Urho
Louhi

Timo Saloniemi

the Zhukov is named after Gennady Zhukov, the Romulan War-era captain. likewise the Cortez is named for a Romulan War era captain...

in my fan-fic. which is in MY CANNONN!!!!!!!!!!!1!1!!111111!

One thing that irritates me about Star Trek in general is that, despite having 150 member worlds and being started up by four races, most Federation ships (not just Starfleet!) have Earth names.

So I will take this opportunity to come up with my own names from other cultures (where or not they're member worlds doesn't matter!)

USS Kal-El
USS Alf
USS Bill Adama (wait, someone beat me to this one)
USS Mork
USS Yoda
USS Ganthet
USS ET: The Extra-Terrestrial (which means its full name is United Star Ship Extra-Terrestrial: the Extra-Terrestrial)
USS Gonzo
USS Doctor
USS Klaatu
USS Great Gazoo
USS Optimus Prime

I would have the USS Depeche Mode, after my favourite synth-pop band.

I agree. However, I must admit that some USS Sarchiapoides of Andoria does not have the same emotional punch of, say, USS George Washington.

I like to thing that often "general" names are just English translations of alien names. USS Courageous, Victory, Defiant could be traditional Andorian warship names, for all we know.

Well, we do have the USS Gorkon and the USS (Vulcan name that i forgot), but that's out of how many compared to the Earth presidents, generals, politicians, painters, writers, etc. etc. that Starfleet ships are named after? Eeesh.

That makes a ton of sense.Good point.

Vulcan ship names gleaned from Star Trek novels (reposted from the thread in Trek Tech):

USS Savar, after the founder and first prefect of the Offworld Service
USS S'Task, for Surak's first disciple
USS Lahirh, after a pre-Reformation kingdom
USS Gelevesh, for an early asteroid mining ship
USS T'Rukhemai, after the moon of Vulcan's companion planet T'Rukh
USS Nevasa, for the Vulcan name for 40 Eridani A
USS Pelasht, after the ancient stone fortress that now houses the Vulcan Science Academy

S'harien would be a great name for a Saber.

And in the same thread Mistral suggested USS Selaya.
