For whom would you name a Starfleet ship?

I'll be boring and go for someone I regard as one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century:

U.S.S. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

Yep, that's it. I'd be on the USS Stephen King, I suppose, but only if the captain's name was Roland Deschain. It would surely be haunted and a little creepy, but fun. And in the end, everyone would die. Or something like that.

I would name the ship *after* Roland. :)

(seriously though, USS Deschain does have a nice ring to it.)

You're right, I'd so be on the USS Deschain! But the Captain would probably be a loner obsessed with finding some dark planet that is supposed to answer everybody's questions about the meaning of life... and he would gladly sacrifice his senior staff in order to find that planet. But I don't care. Like the saying goes: Never a dull day in Mid-World!

Long days and pleasant nights, gunslinger! :techman:

I probably wouldn't name it after anyone at all. Both in Trek and in the real world, I much prefer ships that aren't named after people. Names like Enterprise and Defiant. The current trend of naming aircraft carriers after presidents, for example, really annoys me.

I generally agree with you. I have a long rant about the names on aircraft carriers, but I'll spare you. I want to pry the names off the: Stennis, Vinson, Reagan and Truman. It's a farce FDR has to share a destroyer with Eleanor. Give her the destroyer and give him a carrier.

I like the traditional names: Ranger, Bon Homme Richard, etc.

I like the idea of scientists names and qualities as names for Starfleet vessels.

ps. Submarines should be named for fish!
