First Picard Show pic!

Hmm, to my eye, the color of the uniform by the left arrow is a close match to the one worn by the person facing the one indicated by the right arrow. I'm not sure if right arrow guy has a red collar, but the shoulders definitely appear to be a different color from any others in the picture, as far as I can tell. That said, I acknowledge that low resolution and low light can definitely create artifacts.

It might be red uniform in a low light.

I'm actually interested in seeing what people who don't like ENT, Kelvin, or Disco at all think of Star Trek: Picard, since it's the first Star Trek in almost two decades to not be a prequel or reboot.

Are you sure? The vitriol is tiring to me. Now I slept through ENT the first time but I saw all the Kelvin films during the first week. I have no clue how these people can claim to be fans and hate just about everything. Nemesis on the other hand.... I can't even watch that thing a second time. I still regret dragging a friend to it. Thankly the second LoTR film hit the next week.

I guess it could be fun to feel sorry for them missing out on something they used to enjoy because of strange hangups or biases.

Since these are the first shots, what are the chances that they are the prologue and happen closer to the destruction of Romulus? This could be 10 years before the rest of the show. Actually they have been filming for several weeks so this is probably the main show.

For some reason I expect a prologue to set the stage. Now that I think of it, a Short Trek without Picard would be a great way to do that. If that is even possible with PIC going to Amazon and DSC going to Netflix and S31 going to ?Apple.

I watched QPid again this morning, often maligned episode, but I was really pleased with it. The connection between Q and Picard was outstanding. I really hope he shows up.

Just gonna leave these here...

The show is also being filmed in California. And since it appears this is Starfleet Academy, I wonder if it's being shot in the same location that stood for the Academy grounds.

Not quite what I was getting at. I am absolutely certain the Picard show will be far different from TNG and the other 24th century shows. But it is nice that they grease the wheels with something identifiably "Star Trek" before moving onto the changes they are going to make.

Ah, got it.

I had interpreted it in the same way @fireproof78 had. My bad.

I wonder why CBS let it happen that bootlegged photos and stills from promotional videos are shaping the first impression of such a flag ship show. They could not hire an on set photographer and release HQ images? They could not release the press release video? I consider this a sign of a strong insecurity from the producers about the product. They dont seem proud about what they have accomplished so far and want to show it to the public.

CBS simply doesn't have the marketing machine that, say, Disney has.
On a MARVEL movie, they have an extremely strict marketing cycle:
  1. at first they publish concept art of what the actor in the final costume of the superhero looks like. Since they're pretty good at that, that's what shapes most people's perception of the character.
  2. Then - inevitably - shooting photos leak. If what happens then is divisive or doesn't line up (say, Captain Marvel with her traditional costume in blue instead of black/red) - people will already KNOW this isn't final - as they have already seen the concept art, and that she will be wearing her "traditional" costume at the end of the movie. So no backlash during that ealry production timeframe, even if they do risky stuff. That's a good ploy.
  3. Then, the first trailer - which exclusively focuses on the main characters - no plot or bad guys at all - see the "Guardians of the Galaxy"-line-up trailer. Just to sell people on the characters. Only the final shot is usually the very first CGI render of a big explosion/battle - plus a funny tag after the credit
  4. Then the final trailer, where they go full out on everything - vfx, action, spoiling of major plot points/all the best jokes to really sell it to mainstream audiences
In fact - compared to the DIS marketing cycle - I'm already extremely positively surprised at what CBS - a mere television company - did for Picard: The very first image they released was the main character, and also (apparently) the main (or at least familiar) uniform - to ease in the hardcore fans.

They're doing it in the right order. The first release isn't some photo of a completely unrecognizable garbage re-design of a familiar Trek race *cough cough

And honestly, the overwhelming positive reaction these few pictures had IMO speaks for that being the right approach how to handle the marketing of a familiar IP. None of that is actually that indicative of the final product. But they come across as "on the right tracks".

I know it is a tiny tiny tiny tiny fraction, but that looks kind of promising looking at the set etc. I really hope it is a lot more controlled as far as cinematography and dialogue than Discovery, which is very Abrams-esque.
I'm not a always a fan of Abram's cinematography, but I am curious: how is the dialogue and cinematography Abrams-esque, or is that a new synonym for "I don't like it" ? Neither seem very like him, actually.

DSC featured a lot of walk and talk, moving cameras, heavy vfx, and lens flares. Very reminiscent of the style established for the ST09 movie.
