Female Characters in the J.J.Verse

If you want to count random NPC's on the bridge who had one line, go ahead. That's not what I would call a character however.

TOS's Kyle, TNG's Rager, VOY's Vorik... They often got barely more than being a two-line walk on, enough to gain them a screen credit, though - plus future episodes, in which they finally got more to do. Every possibility that someone like Hannity would become a fully-blown character in the next movie.

Give me Ensign Rager over Wesley Crusher any day! In fact Lanei Chapman did a great job in Space Above and Beyond too - why didn't they bring Rager back for the movies? WHYYYYY? :scream:

Plus I'll watch Christine Rose in anything - she absolutely ruled in Heroes. T'Pau? Hell yeah! :vulcan:

I forgot about Kirk's mom because she was just in the opening sequences and then never seen again. As someone else said in this thread, a shame she wasn't at the ceremony at the end.

For characters we had:

Kirk's mom, in the intro, never seen again.
Gaila, might be still alive but also might be quite dead.
Amanda, dead.
Uhura, only fully fledged female character we know will be in ST:XII.

Now sure, Kirk's mom might be in it, no death is stopping this, but it seems highly unlikely. So yeah, we need more female characters. Rand would be great, in rebooted form. More personality than mooning over Kirk.

I'm sorry, but I consider Uhura being front and center on the posters for the movie to be enough of a female 'presence' even if most don't think so.

As for Winona? I'd guess that since she was in Starfleet, she might have been on a ship somewhere, and couldn't get to Earth to see her son be given his first command-such things happen to families who have both members in a service.

Overall, one thing I'd like to say is: PLEASE stop using the Bechtel Test to be judging the other movies (most likely only two!) that are coming up in this series. Let the director, writers, and producers come up with what they want to come up with without fans second-guessing and armchair-directing (and backseat driving!)

That's a cool test. I approve.

And stop armchair directing second guessing? Why? It's not like anyone is reading this stuff and actually trying to please all these diverse voices. We armchair direct because it's fun. We're massaging our hobby here.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to love ST:XII whether it passes teh Bechdel test or not, whether there are too many 'splosions or not, whether the ship is too big and whatever color the nacelles are. I love ST:V, I am not hard to please :D

One 'token' female lead? You should be ashamed that your standards are so low! I've never once applied the Bechtel Test, although I think it must be amusing to try it. I prefer common sense. Is there any reason (beyond the sexism of the writing and casting) why why there are so few women throughout Star Wars (even if you completely strip out the clones from the equation)?

Still, this attitude shouldn't surprise anybody. The writers of so-called 'modern' sci fi don't spontaneously materialise from a cultural vacuum. There are plenty of people who are happy for a movie to have one (preferably young & scantily-clad) female lead. I just don't see the logic of that attitude, particularly in a franchise where the society is supposed to treat the sexes equally.
