So does anyone else like Star Trek for the characters and the scripts rather than what the sets look like, or is it just me?

Is it mutually exclusive? Or is it possible for one to like Trek for the characters and what the sets look like?

They've already made six Star Wars movies. Can't you just re-watch your DVDs?
I was being facetious. Sort of.
`
Anyone who claims that they watch Star Trek only for the stories and characters is talking nonsense.
`
Its about the visuals. ;)
I'm guessing you haven't watched very many TOS episodes.

The fact is, this movie is supposedly based on the TOS characters and themes. There weren't a lot of space battles in Star Trek, and if this movie leans towards mindless action it's going to be a major departure from the spirit of TOS.

Yeah, right!

Well, there were a lot of mindless fight scenes, but not of the space battle variety.

Balls to character and script. I want to see stuff get blown up. :D

You can't beat a good space battle. Am I the only one that likes to see starships on fire with big scorch marks on the side?
No way man. I love the SFX battles. See my av for an example. :D

As for the Star Wars comment, I like the Trek ships better. It's fun to see them in action, duking it out.

I've watched every episode of every series.

I'm not talking about space battles per se. I love space battles, but that's not the point. I'm talking spaceships. I'm talking planets, fantastic worlds and strange aliens. I'm talking sets, costume and sound. Like The Super Brando said, its about the technology - the gadgets.

Its all part of a rich tapestry. Star trek is just as much about cool spaceships and weird aliens as it is the story and characters. We are Star Trek fans. We obsess over all kind of stuff. We have a thread devoted to a blurry pixalated corridor for crying out loud!

It seemed like Kirk got in a fist fight every third episode or so.

But TOS wasn't about the technology and the gadgets. That's an attribute of later incarnations of Star Trek.

Star trek is just as much about cool spaceships and weird aliens as it is the story and characters.
No, Star Trek after TOS may be about these things, but TOS largely was not. That's one of the potential problems I see here: wanting to use the TOS characters and settings, but endow them with the TNG and later character. This will be a disappointing movie if that's where it's headed.

:wtf:

Gadgets? - Transporters, Phasers, Communicators, Tricorders, Bio-beds, Warp Drive? Ok, so didn't have the dreaded technobabble nonsense, but...how can you say TOS wasn't about the technology? It was set in the future!

Starships? Are you saying the Enterprise wasn't a character? Didn't everyone in this Board have a picture of the Enterprise on their bedroom wall?

And Aliens? Are you telling me TOS wasn't about Aliens? Is that what you are saying? Pointy ears? Those fellas with the greasy skin and goatee beards? Those furry ball things...Anyone? Bueller?

The success and indeed popularity of TOS was about many things. Not just the storylines and characters. Of course they were important. But to suggest the other stuff didn't matter doesn't make a lick of sense.

Most TOS stories weren't about the technology. Some were, but most weren't. Did they feature advanced technology? Of course, but it was usually not the focus.

Starships? Are you saying the Enterprise wasn't a character?
I never really saw it that way, though I can't imagine TOS without it.

And Aliens? Are you telling me TOS wasn't about Aliens?
It was often about aliens, but usually not "weird aliens", as you put it. Most TOS aliens looked and acted decidedly human.

The success and indeed popularity of TOS was about many things. Not just the storylines and characters.
I didn't say other things don't matter, just that the focus has changed between TOS and newer incarnations of Star Trek. I hope this movie returns to the focus of TOS, rather than keeping the focus of newer Trek and just including the familiar names from TOS.

scotthm I find myself in complete agreement here as well as the overall sentiment of this post.
