Enterprise Bridge Console - discuss!

I personally don't find it very comforting that they seem to be focusing on the movies and novels for characterization rather than the original episodes. I had hoped they would be going to the roots of Trek for that.

I think it might be actually helpful, specifically about the books since at least for me those Trek novels that I have read always helped me see Kirk beyond Shatner's portrayal of him.

Its heartening for me that they are not confining themselves alone to 79 episodes. Orci has never dismissed those 79 episodes which I think he's pretty well aware of to the same degree most of us are. I know they've used Memory Alpha as a resource so certainly aired Trek has had a large bearing on whatever they scripted.

But Shatner's portrayal, for better or worse, is Kirk. I happen to like the way Kirk was portrayed during most of TOS, but not so much in the movies, which I don't like nearly as well.

That's about to not be so anymore.

Either Kirk is tied indelibly to Shatner and the character cannot live without him or the character is able to thrive in other mediums beyond the temporal flesh of the actor filling the role. Its true Shatner has informed and shaped Kirk but there comes a time when this grows beyond the actor portraying him and there is simply: James T Kirk an independent fictional character.

If James T Kirk is a compelling being beyond the actor who first filled the role looking at how others have dealt with him as a person in various mediums can only be a boon to conveying this understanding on screen.

I want them to be writing Kirk, not how Shatner played Kirk and I can understand how you'd want to use other sources then Shatner's episodes in this regard. More so since they're giving us an earlier Kirk.

I for one am going to LOVE seeing the ORIGINAL enterprise look futuristic again. It did in the 60s but today its not so flashy, I'm glad that their changing it for this movie... even if it is only tempory and they find a way to revert back to the Enterprise we all know by the end of the film.

True, and to the extent that the characterization is different means this is a Kirk we aren't familiar with, and we may like him, or we may not.

So does anyone else like Star Trek for the characters and the scripts rather than what the sets look like, or is it just me?

I like it more for the way it looks, these days, but I'm totally happy with the idea of it looking new and different. :)

As long as Star Trek sticks to the ideals and principles and characters that were at the core of the original premise, I have no intention of referring to, or considering it as a reboot.

To me, a reboot is something like Battlestar Galactica, where thematic and backstory elements, and the whole tone of the show's premise have been altered in order to better fit the story that the writers want to tell.

Simply updating the look of the production to better suit the expectations of a modern audience is in no way a reboot - why do so many avowed Star Trek "fans" have such trouble wrapping their head round this? Expecting a $150 million movie produced in 2008 to look like a low budget 1960's TV show is absolutely ludicrous!

Apparently it is just us three... :D

Balls to character and script. I want to see stuff get blown up. :D

You can't beat a good space battle. Am I the only one that likes to see starships on fire with big scorch marks on the side? I've chewed up many a VHS tape as a kid rewinding and fast forwarding a special fx shot. There weren't many of them. You were feeding on scraps, basically.

Special effects these days are ten a penny.

They've already made six Star Wars movies. Can't you just re-watch your DVDs?

They won't. :D

I'm with you man. I love the space battles. I love the spaceships. I know this is looked down upon by many in this 'high-brow' site, but that's what I like.

I love the technology and the gadgets. I love the futuristic ideas and sets and places. I love the scifi stories. I love the astronomy and outer space.

Characters, modern relevance, morality tales, and the Human condition are all secondary to me. You can find all of those things in other movies and other tv shows.

It's threads about the new computer console and the spaceships that get me excited.

I was being facetious. Sort of.

Anyone who claims that they watch Star Trek only for the stories and characters is talking nonsense.

Its about the visuals. ;)
