But these won't be Star Trek fans, they'll be nuTrek fans, and it remains to be seen whether that will be great or not.
That ^ drips of elitism and other things better not be said outside of TNZ. :censored:
Not at all.

How is it elitism to say that fans of nuTrek may not like Star Trek (in general)?

So, are TNG- or DS9- or VOY- or ENT-only fans also nuTrek-fans then?

Oh, you tease, JJ!
The console looks a bit TNGish...it's hard to tell if the console is reflective touch-pads or physical controls...and is that a HUD Astrogator in the background?

Main viewer w/ a dee inset.....no wait....with that "chair" in the way, that's not right either....
Ambassador Spock hitches a ride on a science vessel! It looks too 24th century to be Enterprise

It really is sad some people are such slaves to meaningless canon minutia they can't even conceive of having an open mind about this movie.

I don't see red...which has me seeing red! (ok bad joke)

It's hard to tell what exactly is going on there. It has the round glass thing...it just looks confusing to me, I'll need a better picture than that!

Pat,

Abrams has used the word "reimagining."

So no, it's not a reboot.

What he's doing is reimagining the visual appearance of TOS-the ship, the uniforms, the technology.

So what's being stated is that TOS always looked like this.

You can't honestly believe the TOS designs could still work as is.

It's ludicrous. I'm a TOS purist, but when it comes to this project, I can see that those designs have to be updated.

But it's still the same Trek universe we've always know. Hence Nimoy's return.

So... how did that picture or Abrams sitting at the station console originate? Was someone from Trekmovie.com on set? Or did Abrams send it on?

Sharr

Bob Orci took photos during the JJ chat. you can see this one and the other photos on TM. 'twas a great chat, btw. a lot of the cast showed up and answered questions, including Pine, Quinto, Saldana, Cho, Yelchin and Urban.

that JJ, btw, is a total tease! he's gonna keep doing stuff like this all the time. I can just see it. :scream:

<snip all sorts of rational definitions for above>

Exactly. It's the same as what TMP did with the Klingons; upgraded their appearance with the intent that they always looked that way (of course DS9 and ENT later totally threw that out the window, but we shall ignore that ;) )

Fans bitched about that in fanzines, BTW. The first revival of Trek in TMP launched the beginnings of whinging fandom as we now know it...but it required the Internet to fully flower.

Superman,

If you want to subsititute "reboot" with "reimagine", then go for it. It's the same thing. The fact is he has lied, and I despise liers.

It worked with Enterprise on the Defiant- it could work her. Add the detail needed for the big screen. But don't tell me that you're presenting an orange and give me an apple that tastes a little like an orange.

What exactly needed to be "reimagined" here. Why does the Star Trek that we know have to be changed? They could have made a new movie without the characters and ship we know- thereby EXPANDING the Star Trek universe and showing us new stuff. But again, you can't say this is not a reboot by saying it's reimagining...

I will still remain open minded to the possibility that JJ won't screw everything up. So far though, it's not looking good...

I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion here. There will be those who like it, who are indifferent, and who hate it.

No, he hasn't.

They've all been as direct about this stuff as they can be, practically speaking; the fact that some literal-minded fans have tranlated "respect canon" into "we won't change anything no matter how trivial any more than you're personally comfortable with" doesn't make it mean that.

I guess it would be sad if it mattered.

If there are a few people who believe the new movie has to be exactly like TOS to be good, then who cares?

Reboot your computer. It's still the same computer. All the same nformation is still contained therein.

If the sets have been redesigned because the future as imagined from now doesn't look like the future as imagined from 40 years ago, that's just fine with me. An as-was translation of TOS to the big screen would not achieve the goal of being a film for everyone, old audience and new. It would please a very small number of very narrow-minded fans and would have the effect of killing the franchise for the foreseeable future because it wouldn't make any money. It would be a nostalgia piece for a niche market. If that's what you want, go watch a few episodes of New Voyages.

It is possible to respect the overall story and history of Star Trek and still tell a new story using the old characters. This story will be, IMHO, a part of the original canon despite the new actors, despite the new sets and despite the whining of the stuck-in-the-60s multitudes. I will rationalise any non-exact matches with what I know to be Trek the same way I always have... easily, with a sense of suspended disbelief and an open mind. And I am increasingly certain this is going to be a great film that I will really enjoy.

I will not be using the phrase "nuTrek." This film is called Star Trek, and I think it's going to be great.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, nuTrek (or Abrams' Trek) will be like listening to a cover of a song-- the beats may be the same, but the arrangement is slightly different. Yet it is the same song.

That's not necessarily the case.

Lots of things may have been zipping around in RAM that are no longer there after a reboot. That's why rebooting your PC will often fix simple problems.

Rebooting Star Trek might get rid of some problems too, we'll have to see.

I like what I see so far, even if it clashes with TOS aesthetic continuity. Remember, we don't see what the NCC-1701 originally looked like right after her initial launch. Quite a few years pass before "The Cage" and then the Kirk episodes roll around. For all we know this is what the ship looked like before a pre-"Cage" refit and overhaul.

Whatever word you want to come up with to describe it, The new movie will stay true to the characters and backstory/history. The visual elements will be altered yet recognizable.

Just like, say, Batman Begins. It had the same characters and iconic backstory but with new style. The suit had the cowl & ears, but it wasn't Keaton's suit. But it was still recognizably Batman. The relationships & motivations were still there. They didn't turn Alfred into a drunken moron or have Bruce wayne a disfigured Phantom of the Opera character. Childhoods remained largely intact.

So don't sweat the consol...
