If the actual NX had a color scheme closer to the TOS Enterprise, I would have liked it much better.

It wasn't that far off from "The Cage". Everything was gray or muted blue, it seemed.

I'm not trying to drag this out, but I'm rather curious why you find the sphere idea so primitive? (BTW, I'd argue that the Pasteur had a sphere rather than a saucer because it was a medical ship and needed more space.)
Since we were talking about the idea of a lighter hull scheme, I thought I'd post a link to Doug Drexler's blog where he has shared the 'approval' model of the NX-01, which did indeed have a lighter color.

While the above design is quite pleasing to my eye (love the detail), it just does not conform to my vision of a pre-tos Enterprise.
I have seen this design with added notations by ENT production staff as being "too 24th century." Although the design was rejected I must admit that it would be a beauty to behold via small or large (theater) screen.
