Dune Part 2 2023 (24, 25, 26...)

Who cares? Seriously, let's not do Scorsese-MCU all over again. The guy is entitled to have an opinion, no need to either attack the man and his work, or jump to his side to defend his opinion. It's why these entertainment journalists ask famous directors and actors these kind of questions, to generate discort which generates clicks.

I bet they hate the fact Tarantino praised the new Top Gun instead of trashing it. They could only do the one headline, and barely anybody even clicked on it.

Will we also be seeing her husband, Count Hasmir Fenring?

Would be awesome if Villeneuve writes him as the almost Kwisatz Haderach like in the books and one of the few people who could actually take Paul in a fight at the height of his powers. I always liked that scene in the books at the end.

Legendary is negotiating with both Sony and Paramount now that their current deal with WB is over. Considering everything that happens with the theatrical/digital simultaneous release and now the WBD merger this is not a surprise

This probably means that the next Dune movie might get released by Columbia or Paramount (the latter happening would be ironic since there was to be a Dune movie made by Paramount a short while ago [there's also a piece of preliminary artwork floating around that has a nifty Dune logo and the Paramount logo.]) I downloaded it once and had it as wallpaper on my computer for a while: if I can find it, I'll post it here.

No, the next one is still part of the WB deal. Messiah could potentially be distributed by someone else.

Of course, the whole connected universe plan with the ongoing HBO TV series is also a complication.

Oooo...I love both Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson! I think Watson is especially well-suited to play a Bene Gesserit sister.

I thought this was dead in the water. Looks like we're getting the origin of the Sisterhood, which I didn't expect.

I'm disappointed that it sounds like they will be following the BH & KJA books afterall. I mean, I had expected it, and it seemed like that was part of the deal with the rights (THP had wanted the movie to be based ont heir books, not the OG, so a tv series on their works and the OG as the movie seemed like the compromise) but I was still hoping it might be an original creation. There had been some talk that it was supposed to be completely original at one point.

Agree - the prequel books were atrocious when compared to the original books. It was like fine dining vs. a McDonald's menu ( you can eat it and maybe even enjoy it but you know there is much better stuff out there).

Let's hope the showrunners pull off a good show, they got very good actressess at least.

The Pinky and the Brian books are what they are. They're relatively well-written fan fiction that misses the point of the original novels. It's shlock created to cash in on an existing IP, to which they had the rights, after all. The quality drops off over time, but I think that's also true of the originals. I gave up after the Butlerian Jihad novels, which seemed to describe a completely different timeline from what FH intended. That's fine. I gave my copies of their novels to a charity shop. Eminently disposable fiction.

I disagree; the Legends and Prelude novels were my entry point into the Duneiverse, and are the reason I'm a fan of the IP.

And that's ok and if it led to you reading the original novels all the better. But do you honestly think these novels are on the same level as the original ones by Frank Herbert?

I'm not knocking them completely - i only ever read the House books and started on the Butlerian Jihad novel but especially the House novels lacked the finesse of the Frank novels. They just took some details of the original story such as how Gurney Halleck got his scar or why Barin Harkonnen was so fat and crafted something around it. You can read them on the train or if you don't want to tax your brain too much but ultimately it's not these books or books at that level that will be read decades from now and turn into classics.

If they were needed is up for debate and anyone has to decide for themselves but personally for me it was just a cash grab to make some more money off the Dune IP.

They can't really base the series on the books. The scope is just too enormous. There's a lot more that just the sisterhood going on. They're probably just taking the one story and the characters and maybe a major plot point or two. I don't think we're going to see adherence to the source material.

I believe the series will be set 10,000 years before the events of Dune, so perhaps 5 BG or 83 years after the battle of Corrin in the first days of the Corrino Empire during the Galactic civil war. I haven't read the BH&KJA novel so I'll steal the following from the fan wiki:
On the planet Lankiveil, the Harkonnen family ekes out a lean existence, far from the glory enjoyed by their ancestors after Vorian Atreides disowned the disgraced ]Abulurd Harkonnen. While the parents have decided to surrender ambition for survival and a humble existence, the two oldest children, Griffin and Valya, seek to rebuild their family fortunes through service to the Landsraad and the Sisterhood on Rossak, respectively.

Vorian's granddaughter Raquella Berto-Anirul, who survived a poisoning that provided her with the memories and mental presences of her female ancestors, leads the Sisterhood of Rossak. She thwarts Butlerian sympathizers within her own ranks, who correctly suspect that Raquella and her inner circle are using computers to manage their breeding index, which comprises an immense amount of family data from across the Imperium. Raquella is aided in these efforts by Sister Valya Harkonnen, who finds her efforts to rebuild her family's glory impeded when the spoiled Princess Anna Corrino (sister to Emperor Salvador and Roderick) is sent to Rossak. Anna, viewed as an embarrassment by the royal family, is meant to learn important skills with the Sisters, but instead follows her own childish ambitions.

Sister Dorotea steals two pills of the Rossak drug that gave Raquella her abilities and encourages Valya to take it alongside her. While Dorotea became the second ever Reverend Mother after taking and surviving it, Valya merely pretends to take it, but keeps the pill. Reverend Mother Dorotea learns of the Sisterhood’s secret computers, and that Raquella is her grandmother. More follow her; including Anna Corrino, who fails to become a Reverend Mother and enters a trance state. Through the new director of the Suk Medical School (and former Rossak Sister) Dr. Ori Zhoma, the Sisterhood also plots against Salvador, who it fears may be the ancestor of a potentially disastrous tyrant.

It doesn't sound terrible but then I haven't read the book.
