Dune Part 2 2023 (24, 25, 26...)

Rome, Torchwood, Luther, GoT, Kenobi, ... She's certainly been low-key Sean Beaning a bit.
And Carnival Row, too!

Until your earlier post, I hadn't realized Varma had been taking the Sean Bean path! I know and love her in all of those shows and yet somehow I never put one and one together.

Likewise, which is somewhat amusing in my case since I remember a conversation I had with someone in the real world after her casting on Obi-Wan was announced. The person I was talking to asked "why do I know that name?" I answered "she was that one on Torchwood who kept getting killed and resurrected repeatedly."

I don't think a TV adaptation of a mediocre novel need itself be mediocre. Most of the TV adaptations of The Expanse novels were better than the source material - even though the same writers were involved. They took the chance to polish their own stories.
They did more than one adaptation of The Expanse?

Yeah, I had heard about that particular bit of stupidity.

This is where I quit reading the prequels/interquels. They went from entertaining backstory to then trying to cover every single second of Paul's birth which was unnecessary. The fact that he was just an heir being raised with witch powers in secret was interesting enough.

I stopped after reading the culminating novel of the Butlerian Jihad trilogy, The Battle of Corrin (2004), when I finally realised that practically nothing on the page was likely to have been part of Frank Herbert's vision. I'd previously read the House trilogy, which I found bland and uninspired, and skipped Fremen Justice for some reason I forget. After consuming six of BH&KJA's offerings, I decided I'd wasted enough time and money. The books went to a charity shop.

You are a more patient man than i - i only made it through the House books and part of the first Butlerian Jihad book before quitting.

I don't mind easy reading books - i have read dozens of Star Wars novels ( including that huge 19 book Invasion series) but i have no illusion that those are pure entertainment novels with no real depth to them. This is what made the Dune books so jarring - you have the amazing works by Frank Herbert and at least i was extremely disappointed by the blandness of the other books, which at no point in time even came close to the quality of the original books.

I'll someday finish House Corrino. I have no expectations of "like the originals" because that's impossible standard. More curious as to perspectives within the world.

I can't say i've seen something with Butler ( at least not that i remember directly) but given this interview i have to say visually he fits the role of Feyd - can't wait to see how he will look in the movie and the first trailer. Also his final fight with Paul should be amazing.

Less than a year folks! :)

He’s the titular character in Elvis, and also has a small, creepy role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood…

He played Elvis this year! How could you miss that?

That's why his name sounded familiar, I've been wanting to see that.

It was so weird for me to see Butler go from starring in that awful Chronicles of Shannara show to drawing rave reviews for his performance in Elvis, and now he's working with Denis Villeneuve in a major role. Crazy.

Honestly, I haven't heard of Austin Butler either, nor do I know anything about the Elvis biopic aside from a few commercials on TV.

Which, for me just emphasized the past year I seem to have checked out of movies altogether. I've only gone to the theatre six times this year. Before the pandemic, I was going double that. Damnedest thing is, there are movies that interest me, I just find it really inconvenient to go to the theatres nowadays and even when I do go, it feels like a pain in the ass even when I enjoy the movie. Guess I'm getting old.
