Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

As for Shohreh Aghdashloo; as much as I love her in literally everything I see and/or hear her in, they've already established that Shaddam is a man. Other complications include male primacy seems to be a thing in Corrino succession, and as has been noted, you can't have a Bene Gesserit Emperor as it would supremely fuck with the lore of this period. The Sisterhood wouldn't make such a direct grab for power until after The Scattering.

Now, Shohreh Aghdashloo could be a good Wensicia if they go the Susan Sarandon route and fudge the ages a little, or change her to Wensicia's namesake and Shaddam's sister instead (which may just have been an Encyclopaedia thing, I forget.) Failing that (and assuming they get that far) she'd make a formidable Honored Matres.
OK, those are fair points. I forgot about them calling the Emperor a man in the movie, and how much having a would change the whole dynamics of the story.

Wasn't that a closely guarded BG secret so the baron wouldn't have been aware of it?
yes, but he seemed to think enough of himself for everyone. I'm just saying he ought to be protrayed as cunning and dangerous. Mostly thinking of the awful portrayal in the Lynch movie.

I can't find a story to link to, but they've announced that KJA and Brian Herbert are going to be doing a comic book adaptation of the original Dune.

Which I've been reading (up to issue #11 by now) and find enjoyable, with a storytelling shorthand that works for me, and will work for anybody that's read the books.

So
I loved loved loved Blade Runner 2049. My favorite film of the year. I'm really hoping he does something great with Dune. I still wish it had been an HBO series, but I've now got confidence that it would be a great 3 hour movie.

So it ended up being an almost three hour movie but felt half as long as Blade Runner 2049 did. Quite the impressive feat. I was too busy looking at every single single corner of every room in every scene looking at details.

I apologize, everybody; I thought that it was the Dune: House Atredies comic book JD was talking about-of course it was about an adaptation of the original novel.

Enjoy!!!

In other news, the film has been nominated for three Golden Globes: Best Drama, Best Director, and Best Score (or whatever their exact verbiage is).

That’s late. It’s already ready to buy digitally here.

… and I just finished watching it - and it doesn’t disappoint on iota - other than it was only part 1! Talk about leaving me wanting more (in the best possible way!)

Despite its long run-time, it had me glued to the screen for the majority of the viewing - and visually is a magnificent, sumptuous desert feast to behold!

Cannot wait for part 2!!!!!

I LOVED IT

holy crap it was so good

I suck at watching movies in the theatre, especially at night, I have no idea why but I often fall asleep. I am not a movie person (prefer tv series). Well I was absolutely riveted by this entire film, all umpteen minutes of it. As soon as it was done I wanted MORE.

I have probably read the first book 5 times but it's been a long time so though I recognized everything going on I conveniently did not notice anything left out

Wonderful casting! Loved the pace.

Going to reread the book now :)

I know I am in the minority but I found the movie boring and predictable, especially certain deaths. Maybe because people compared It to Lord of the Rings, I don't see why the movie is epic.

Please don't ban me

The story alone fits the textbook definition of an epic. Epic doesn’t necessarily just mean ‘really cool’ even if that’s how we hear it most often these days.

Anyone else severely disappointed that the blue rays are not in the IMAX ratio?

I've watched the movie 3 times, twice in IMAX and once standard, and you really do notice a difference going from one to the other. There are some bad pans and cuts in the standard to fit all the info on the screen that the IMAX picture has, and it still fails.

I'm seriously considering not buying it, which is so absolutely shocking. I'm sure it will be streaming shortly after disc release on Crave anyway and you know they are gonna double dip with an IMAX ratio disc at some point. This is an obvious cash grab.

The only other blue ray I've ever bought day 1 was Fury Road. This was going to be my second. But now? Meh.

In other news, Amazon is now selling blue rays of Children of Dune, which had been released in other regions but not North America before.

There are also new Blue Ray editions of Frank Herbert's Dune but those are international imports sold by 3rd parties and fullfilled by Amazon International so I'd be concerned about region locking. Those in Europe might be interested in checking their local blue ray dealers for both sets though. I'm not sure if it's the expanded edition or the as aired version. I haven't read ay reviews on either. Neither appear available for purchase/rental digitally so that makes me suspect they're cash ins that are the DVD prints just on a blue ray disc.

Edit:. The CoD blue that Amazon itself is selling is from Australia and I believe is region locked.

Hmm, I was going to buy the 4K+HD set but I might defer now until I hear other reviews.

The Digital Bits got an early copy to review if you're interested, just google "digital Bits dune".

I'm also disappointed in the special features - I believe they're all already online, so we're not even getting anything new that way. What's the point:shrug:

I already decided I'd hold off on the disc release, since there's almost certainly going to be a fancier one after Part II (or III, or wherever he finishes it off) comes out with all the movies put together.
