DS9 Versus Becker

I had a similar discussion with another member who felt age was an issue when it concerned Spock and Saavik in TWOK and Spock and Valeris in TUC; and I feel as woman as long as the person is of legal age the two can be together. Age differences shouldn't matter as long as they're of legal age and they have feelings for each other. Age is just a number and I wish we can have children over 50 but it's not the nature of things, but one can only love who she thinks is compatible in the eyes of the beholder. Jadzia and Sisko were just fine in my book, if it happened.

Personally, I think that if there’s more than 7-8 years between a couple that it isn’t a good “look.”

Which was the better show [DS9 or Becker]?

An apples and oranges comparison. DS9 a syndicated sci fi series and Becker a modern broadcast situation comedy. I loved Terry Ferrell in DS9, but I understood why she took the promotion to the big leagues and thought she ended up doing well in it. Becker was a slightly above average romantic sitcom series. Can't say it was timeless or a classic, however, I'm sure she made far more money during Becker's six season run than she did over the course of her six seasons on DS9. Not to mention the status of headlining a major network TV series. Longview though Deep Space Nine was/is far more memorable.

Well, she had less than four seasons on Becker, but more importantly, she probably made a lot more on Trek given the forced calls and residuals.

She was very attractive. I thought that DS9 did a great job in showcasing her good looks very creatively. In Becker, she appeared almost drab at times.

Four seasons on network TV would still likely trump 6 in syndication. Syndication contracts were usually worse than a broadcast network contract and figuring she was one of 7 (later 8) leads on DS9 (versus strong #2 on Becker), well, that was slicing a smaller pie thinner. Now with Becker she wasn't getting Ted Danson money (as George Costanza would say), but a far less demanding schedule, and more upside. Don't forget she also knew DS9 only had one more year while Becker had the opportunity to extend her employment far more than that.

She also wasn't making Patrick Stewart money: the oddity about salaries was that Stewart's agent negotiated a poor contract, which allowed Berman to keep salaries artificially low (who could earn more than Picard!). It meant that there was seldom any wiggle room for renegotiations, but it also meant that not all the money went to one actor. I believe that the per episode average budget for a DS9 episode was just under $3 million. When Babylon 5 started, it had about half the budget (after main talent). As a syndicated show, there was simply a lot more money for Star Trek. Part of the reason was prestige, but Paramount negotiated a very advantageous contract with local stations. When TNG came out, Paramount gave them the new Star Treks for free if they could take 70% of the advertising revenue. I believe the same arrangement applied to DS9. Yes, the Star Trek hours sucked … that was the forced calls. Yes, the hours in the makeup chair sucked. However, there was a lot of money in Star Trek.

Trek is seen as the end of someone's career because of typecasting. It made good career sense I guess. Unless future employers look at loyalty to the show and decide she might not stay, which she didn't on Becker. But I don't know if she was fired or quit.

Which show was better? Are you kidding? DS9 was remarkably good, and Becker was a very ordinary sitcom, which is to say, passable if you're someone who turns on the TV just to have something on .

Typecasting happens to some extent, but by the time she was a regular character for six years it's already happened and she might as well embrace it. The best Star Trek actors have still gotten other roles after they left Star Trek - Nimoy, Shatner, Stewart.

I wasn't happy about Farrell leaving, but in the end, she had to do what was best for her so I can't blame her for that. And if the rumours are true about Berman's crappy attitude towards Farrell, then more power to her for standing up for herself.

I never heard of Becker until this thread, but Ted Danson plays a very charming character on The Good Place. So a grumpy Ted character and a non-Trill Terry might be a fun combo on screen.

Always sad that Jadzia was gone but I also adore Ezri. It was always going to be a gain+pain situation to replace a character.

I didn't like Cassidy with Sisko, either, but Jadzia was too young for him, I think. As for Jake, in the end, it was Kira with Jake, and that final scene was breathtaking!
At the start of the series:
Jadzia was supposed to be about 28 human years old. How old do you think Sisko was supposed to have been? I'd have said he was supposed to have been 38-40, give or take a year or two.

Jake it seamed was supposed to be about 13.
Kira seemed like she would have supposed to have been early thirties, possibly up to about 34.
I think Jake and Kira would have been borderline child molestation. Plus ZERO chemistry, a woman old enough to be his mother, who probably viewed him as being something like a nephew.

Sisko and Jadzia had no chemistry of a sexual nature either.
Way better as friends.

Given a choice between a syndicated sci-fi show with one season remaining and a popular network sitcom I don’t blame her for picking Becker.

Kira/Jake wouldn’t make any since unless he became politically powerful. ;)
