Doctor Who moving to Disney+ in 2023

Interesting. I heard that Disney might dramatically expand the show's budget, though with that, would they want greater control over the show's creative direction?

While I understand why some people are upset by this news, it works for me because I'm such a big fan of Marvel, Pixar, and shows from Star Wars. Plus, Disney is actually producing great animated films again. Getting Doctor Who is just an added bonus for me.

For me, it would finally tip me over the edge. I love the SW stuff, the Marvel stuff, the Disney stuff... but it's never felt like enough... throw Doctor Who on top and I'm down for it, especially if at least all of post-2005 was available as well.

I think it's good. It'll potentially do great things for Who's international profile.

Well, buying all those restoration dvds back in the day seems to be paying dividends today. Ha
I was thinking I should finally make an honest man of myself and get the new series on Blu Ray, and I literally can't figure out how I'm supposed to buy it. It's doubly annoying because there are nice, simple per-Doctor box sets out on DVD, now, but the HD discs are just a jumble of out-of-print box sets and weird one-offs.

The first four seasons were SD only so you might as well get the DVDs.

Both DVDs and Blu-rays are easy to find in the UK - maybe look at importing them with the pound crashing against the dollar lately?

Except the DVD release includes the season 4.5 specials, so I'm doubling-up on those, at least, and the upscales can be an improvement on the DVD quality, just from having the extra gigabytes to play with.

That's a thought, plus I'd get them at the original frame-rate (which should be fine since I'll be ripping them all to my Plex server, anyway; There might be a problem with region-protection on my blu ray drive, but that should be solvable). Even so, look at this; I feel like I'd need a law degree to figure out the most economical way to get every episode and special since 2005 on a disc at the best quality. I really wish there was just a big box they just threw everything that's been released as yet into so I could just hop on the train and not be punished for not keeping up with individual releases (at the BBC's incredible early-2000s prices; nowadays, you can get entire shows that aren't Doctor Who for the cost of a single season back then).

I have also heard that Disney will be contributing substantial funding to future series, similar as to how Netflix funded Discovery season 1 when that series launched, also similar to how Paramount+ are now currently funding Strange New World’s production.

I for one can not wait to finally see a… ‘spider Dalek’ fully envisioned on a Hollywood budget. :D

All final creative decisions and directions still apparently fall back on to RTD and the Beeb/Doctor Who character and alien license holders, but at the end of the day… who pays their wage/fees? Money speaks.. Terry Nation’s estate know this *very* well… though they should have held out a decade or so for Disney If they *really* wanted to get rich.

Disney spending lots of money on DOCTOR WHO... good side, more production value.

Bad side, they will have more creative control.

The Doctor has now officially become a Disney princess. The show we have come to know and love is over.

Disney providing at least some production funding for Doctor Who - which was confirmed at a press event held in celebration of the announcement of Disney+ becoming the BBC's new partner in the distribution of Doctor Who in international markets and in celebration of Ncuti being the 15th Doctor - is not automatically a signal that they will in any way have the ability to directly dictate the future creative direction of the program.

The mouse will be footing the budget.

We're getting closer to this reality

Of course! With 3D, the movie screen is bigger on the inside!

They are ponying up a LOT more money for the show. There is not a single show or movie that has ever been produced where someone, or multiple someones, who put up a lot of money didn't exercise their ability to have creative control.

Money talks louder than imagination, unfortunately.

I'm not expecting any massive changes. A lot of money for Doctor Who still isn't that much money in the grand scheme of things.

The production values have been good throughout the Chibnall era, it's just they had to reduce the episode count to maintain it. I guess we might see a return to 13 episode series instead of 10.

And hopefully it'll be UHD too.

Will Doctor Who production maybe gain access to Mandalorian style Volume screens?
Will the new TARDIS set be largely virtual for the first time?

That's an assumption. All that's been said is that Disney+ has made a "premium production investment" in the future of Doctor Who; we don't currently know what that means specifically or what form said investment will take from a practical standpoint.

And even if it is strictly monetary, it's still not an automatic indicator that Disney+ will have any direct oversight into the creative direction of the franchise going forward.

Now that we know that this is a production partnership as well as a distribution one, BTW, the closest analogue I can think of is His Dark Materials, which is a joint production between Bad Wolf Studios, the BBC, and HBO.

Look at the wording 'premium production investment'. When you put the word 'premium' in anything, it means higher or more than normal. And Disney NOT exercising creative control on something they have thrown money at? Really? In a pig's eye.

I think it's a definite that Disney will be supporting the global aspect of Doctor Who. They'll probably be responsible for overseas markets to shop Doctor Who too

Assuming that this partnership does come with the ability for Disney to offer input into the direct creative future of Doctor Who (which is not an automatic guarantee), they are but one of three (or four) entities to possess that ability, the others being the BBC and Bad Wolf Studios (and by proxy, Sony Pictures Television), and both Bad Wolf (SPT) and the BBC are likely to have far more direct hierarchical authority in that regard.

Depends on how much of the money Disney put in vs. the others. It's like the owners of a company... who has greater control, the two or three people who have 49% control of the company, or the single person with 51%?

It's precisely that reason why business owners are extremely hesitant to have less than 51% ownership of a company.
