Doctor Who moving to Disney+ in 2023

Curiously, Variety doesn't make clear when Disney+ takes hold of Doctor Who.

Also of note: Variety confirms that Ncuti Gatwa's first appearance will be Christmas.

Darn it. I did not want to get Disney+. I wonder if Disney will have more pull over the BBC in terms of getting advance air times and publicity than BBCA?

They don't say if this also includes classic Who. I have Britbox added to my Prime account for that now.

Well, that's it, then. I wouldn't be able to watch even if I wanted to.

I've got the Target novels, some new ones, and most of the Classic DVDs. That and fanfic will have to do.

Actually, I doubt BBC's usual waiting until two weeks to announce an airdate will be an issue for Disney+ since a streaming service doesn't have to worry about juggling around a broadcast schedule that in the US is typically decided a couple months in advance.

And certainly we see Netflix gets by just fine waiting until the last minute to announce a premiere date.

On one hand, I've been tossing up getting BritBox for a while now mainly for Classic Who. That might resolve that issue.

Will they have all other spin-offs I wonder (SJA, Torchwood, Class, K9&C?), heck even the shorts like CiN shorts and the NofD? It would be pretty cool to have every bloody thing in one place.

This announcement only specifies that Disney+ will become the first-run Streaming home for new seasons of Doctor Who starting next November.

Having said that, the signing of this deal does probably mean that HBO Max will lose the rest of Modern Who at some point.

I won't be subscribing to effing "Disney+" just to watch one show. So my plan to give the "new" showrunner and the "new" Doctor a go has hit a pretty significant hurdle. Such is life.

^Well you could just subscribe monthly, watch Who and then quit two months later. Disney+ pretty much have me in a headlock between their Marvel and SW stuff, and my re-watch of The X-Files doesn't help, but if all you're interested in is Who then it should be easy to dip in and out.

The future of BritBox is not wholly clear - it is being folded into ITV's streaming platform and the BBC are pulling out. There's no suggestion that their content will be removed yet, but I don't think it's certain it'll stay beyond the current licencing deals.

It would be odd to have the BBC's flagship shows on an ITV-branded platform.

What does this mean for Classic Who? In an ideal world it would align to the new episodes, so everything would be on Disney+ internationally and iPlayer in the UK.

We'll have to see what happens.

I'm fully with you. Damned greedy mouse. The mouse is the perfect mascot for Disney... it wants ALL the cheese.

Disney has THE X-FILES, too? (This is precisely why I have dvd box sets... once you own it, it's yours for good. Never have to worry about streaming rights or ads or anything.)

What's absurd and just wrong is that Disney is the only streaming service (that I am aware of, anyway) that doesn't even offer a free week trial. Or even a few days. They used to, but apparently not anymore.

Damn greedy Disney with their $10 a month subscription
If it's something you really can't afford, borrow a friends account. Or do what everyone else on the internet does when they want a show that they don't subscribe to.

Yes Disney has the X-Files, well it was 20th Century Fox after all.

While I understand why some people are upset by this news, it works for me because I'm such a big fan of Marvel, Pixar, and shows from Star Wars. Plus, Disney is actually producing great animated films again. Getting Doctor Who is just an added bonus for me.

I can afford it, but it's the principle. Besides, it's become a bit of a headache keeping track of all the various streaming services and the payment dates. (We have a list of when certain deals end, so we take it out right before the deal ends, like HBO Max abd Hulu.)

There is only person we know who has Disney, but we are NOT asking him for a favor. (Various reasons that I won't get into here.)

Works for me.
I have Disney+ and Paramount+, and I get Netflix and HBOMax through work, and get Prime through a family plan. There's still stuff that I miss but I honestly don't watch TV all that much anyway.
