The Cybermen feature seem to have the Cybus Industries logo on them

Indeed, that was the very first thing I looked for and, alas, it looks like the Cybus Industries logo on their chest.

The special is actually called "Ghosts In The Machines", and features

Two warring Cybermen from two different realities against one another There are the familiar Cybermen face plate (resembling a serpent), but dressed in wraith-like garments

The doctor's going to need a mop to clean up all the Alt universe stuff that bleeded through. This is probably going to bigger than the Cardiff Rift

Link for that info?

Wow.

Just wow.

What an incredible disappointment.

The cliffhanger resolution was ...predictable, but I figured it wasn't even going to take thirty seconds to be sorted and that we'd still have the same Doctor by the end. But that's fine, I can live with that.

The rest was just a painful mish mash of let downs and cop outs. Gawd, the duplicate Doctor? What was RTD thinking? "Ah, here's a shitty genre cliche I haven't used yet! Paul, to the Tritemobile!"

The best, most exciting elements of this story - Davros, The Doctor himself, and the cut and thrust between the two were criminally underused and in the case of Davros - utterly wasted. Also, the Dalek "SUPER DUPER DESTRY-TEH-UNIVERSE-O-MATIC" device was such a ridiculously overblown piece of nonsense, faux "epic" arse-dribble of a perilous plot device that I found it simply incredible - literally, as in "without credibility".

And, when I thought they couldn't possibly outdo that bollocks for overblown nonsense, they go and "tow" the Earth back in place. What.

Just what. What?

What. Pah.

Rose's return to her universe was a desperate attempt to evoke memories of Doomsday but completely failed to capture that episode's sense of despair and longing. At the end of Doomsday I was reduced to (manly) tears. This scene reduced me to "meh".

Lastly, Donna should have died. Properly. None of this "mind wipe" tosh (he had to fit a reset button in somewhere didn't he?).

Frustratingly, everything else was absolute gold. Catherine Tate's performance in particular was absolutely brilliant. Her emotional pull, her resonance - her sheer versitality really shone through here. I honestly don't know how anyone can say she's a bad actress after this. The woman is phenomenal.

Series 4 has been bloody fantastic for the most part, and I'll certainly be buying the box set. But damn, that was a letdown. Midnight, Turn Left and Stolen Earth were beautiful examples of RTD at his best - an amazing writer when he wants to be. But Journey's End featured everything about his writing that I dislike - most notably his reliance on genre cliches, Voyager-esque technobabble resolutions to everything, and trying so very hard to be "epic" that he completely misses the mark.

Voted average in lieu of a "Frustratingly bad with some flashes of brilliance" option.

And before the usual suspects pounce on me with accusations of "RTD bashing" and "not being a true fan" - bite me. Kthxbai.

It's too bad I didn't read the thread further before posting - this is exactly what my head's tried to tell my fingers to type! I agree with 100% of your post.

Too bad the majority of us here (including me) disagree - with respect to all other opinions, of course. :p;)

Another reason, to prove these Daleks were complete failures is that, among the infinite parallel universes, none featured victorious Daleks, hence destroying the in-episode universe as well (hope my English was not a failure on this post).

Hey, that's a good point. I never thought of that.

However, maybe in some parallel universes the Daleks have indeed become the dominant lifeforms - and they're content to stay in their own universes or haven't thought up of a reality bomb yet.

Sorry one part isn't mentioned but there are two versions of the race which probably mean there are two alternate universe versions.

Love the german speaking Daleks (with an english accent ;) ).

Oh yeah, "exterminieren" isn't a German word- that's fucking Speigel-Deutsch, that is (the German equivalent of Franglais, that German tabloid TV uses!) They should be shouting "vertilgen" - like they do in the German-dubbed episodes actually aired in Germany!

Actually they use "eliminieren" (eliminate ;) ), not "vertilgen" which has a conotation of eating.

Can anyone translate what the German lady said? My German's not that great!

Sections translated from german in italics.

Woman: Nobody's here. What do you want. Go away! Leave me alone.

Martha: My name is Martha Jones, i'm from UNIT, agent 56671 from the medical department.

Woman: It was said, that you would come. Your accent, that is London, yes? I went to London, a long time ago.

Martha: Thought this place was supposed to be guarded.

Woman: There were soldiers, boys - i brought them food, every day, but when the nightmare came, they went home - to die. But not you.

Martha: I have a job to do.

****

Woman: London, those days to see it...so much glamour...so young. I heard the soldiers talking, many times. They would speak of the Osterhagen key.
I think London must be changed now, yes? (...) The Glamour.
You will not go!

Martha: I've got no choice.

Woman: I know the key (...) You are the nightmare, not the others - you. I should kill you! Right here, right now.

Martha: Then do it.

Woman: Martha, to hell with you!

Martha: I know.

I was curious about just what they were saying, thanks for that! :techman:

Just think we could have had Davros for companion in the X-mas special.

Re: Doctor Who – 4x13 – Journey’s End (Grade/Discuss)

I must say I am quite surprised by the general mood on the Outpost Gallifrey forums.. I'm beginning to think everyone on there hated the episode.. really odd, as I honestly believe it was top entertainment. I think the massive expectations and hype play a part in this, but still.. it comes as a surpise to me.

Yeah, me too, especially considering the quite good response to The Stolen Earth. I myself had the opposite reaction, go figure.

I'm not so sure this is objectively a good episode but I had a really good time watching it such that I didn't see the cracks in the facade. The fanwanking worked for me this time. Though Donna's fate really ate at me. Not sure how it will all hold up to rewatching.

Re: Doctor Who – 4x13 – Journey’s End (Grade/Discuss)

"Average" here.

I could nitpick the hell out of the alleged plot, and especially the puke-inducing utter crapfest at Bad Wolf Bay (my GODS that was just badly written horribly shallow shipperfic so over the top I've got a nosebleed just thinking about it), but many have already posted my problems with the finale. A whole lot of buildup for an episode that was virtually all style and zero substance. Don't try to examine the plot too much, it'll fall apart like dried leaves. Yeah, there were some good scenes, but "Turn Left" is still proving to be my favorite of the three here. It actually managed to tell a good story in the process instead of being a limp piece of badfic. Don't get me wrong, there were nice moments, but nice moments do not a coherent plot make. And this one was about as incoherent as an alcoholic on a meth bender.

And 10 demerits for unnecessary use of Davros. Fanwank of the worst order. So many better potential genetic donors for the new Dalek race. So many far more interesting choices, but no, we're stuck with a pitiful return of Davros. Yawn. I mean, if we're going to have an imprisoned character who's the pawn of Dalek Caan's plan, what if that character had been, say, Jenny. Imagine Daleks derived from Timelord genetic material. Now THAT would be an "oh, shit" moment. Instead, we've got the same old Daleks, back again, dying again. They really are the Kenny of the Whoniverse now.

"Oh, my God, you killed the Daleks! You bastard!"

Not. Impressed. Looking forward to Moffatt's tenure in that "it can't possibly go any further into bad fanfic territory" way.

leave it to Jack to get the man the pump action feature of the Tardis :guffaw: All companions piloting the Tardis equals total win

Could had been better I think but it really wasn't that bad. Although I was secretly thinking that at the very end, after that Christmas Special teaser, they should had shown the Tardis flying through space and a resounding booming voice came on and said,

"I STILL AIN'T BOVVERED"

and the Doctor goes "Wot?" :D :D

What would have really pulled at my heart strings is when the doctor is all alone at the end and he visualizes all the companions laughing and we go around one by one.

WOW, FANTASTIC, period.

The TARDIS pulling the Earth, shows the true power of the TARDIS and what it can do. IT WAS AWESOME.

Don't know what to say that hasn't already been said, I really enjoyed the episode.

Oh amen to that. I think a lot of the poeple over there are just completely devoid of a sense of humor or fun.
Still, I get some reassurance from looking at the forum poll. Something like 70% of the votes are a 4 or above. I guess critics are just more inclined to spend time ranting than fans.

Yeah I had a few gripes about the episode, but they were relatively minor. Hell even the slightly silly scene of the Tardis towing the Earth was saved by some amazing music and the pure emotion of the scene. I grew up on Tom Baker, I'm used to certain level of goofiness with my drama. Its part of the shows charm.

I wasn't a big fan of the finale, and i was upset at the fact that no-one died (apart from the daleks of course.)
What, memory wiping wasn't big enough for you? I think that's a fate worse than death.

Totally, the person we know as Donna is dead. Watching her at the end gossiping on the phone was horribly sad; she became this absolutely brilliant character (and that's even before the, what did they call it, metacrisis?) and all of that was taken away and will never be again. And the Doctor has to leave her behind knowing he can never see her again. That's far worse then if she had simply died. It really is "everlasting death"...

What about the humans who were vaporized as well as a bunch of unit soldiers who were exterminated?

The old Doctor who stuff was far more over the top than this stuff so I don't see the problem. It amazes me that fans say some stuff is stupid (towing Earth in this case) but they have no problem with a Time Lord who can regenerate who flies in a police box fighting enemies such as Daleks who are basically the campiest sounded enemies ever with a plunger attached to them and before 2005, they could be defeated by going up stairs :p

in the end Doctor Who is silly fun and thats why we love it

exactly, even way back in the beginning with the first doctor they've had planets that are mobile, for example the cyberman flying Mondas to Earth, then they've had other races try to install engines at the center of the planet to fly it somewhere.... we know the Timelords have mastered black holes, space, and time, so moving a planet with the TARDIS should be easy for them, it is fantastical, and awesome, Doctor Who thinks much bigger than Trek ever did, and I like that

Ah, that's what I was trying to get to! If a race can manipuilate black holes, then flying a shielded planet across the galaxy is peanuts.

I could easily see the doctor saying something like "I used to move planets out of the garage when I was a kid this is easy!"
