I think the biggest problem is that both sides have been so absolutely extreme in their beliefs that there is no pretty much no way they can ever get along.
I don’t know, one extreme wants to give people rights and healthcare and the other wants certain people to no longer exist.
I think this is kind of true but I think one issue nobody talks about is just how literal people take other people's words nowdays. We forget people use hyperbole and exaggerate. Irony and or a misused word in the wrong place or the simply issue that people can't articulate their feelings in words creates conflict. It's one of the reasons I made that thread a few years ago about how words shouldn't matter. I think I lot of context in people's views get lost in translation. I think that is true in real life as well and ten times more a problem on the internet.Of course I know you can be tricked as well by having someone use nice sounding words to do bad things but isn't it better to trust and take the risks of being tricked than being cynical and never trusting? I am pretty cynical about many things I freaking hate it. Why would anyone want to embrace it?

The difference here is unlike certain usual suspects in this thread who clearly live to hate others who "dare" to not march to their propaganda, others have called out the guilty from both ideological sides of the "speech and consequences" controversy, yet the usual suspects cannot be bothered with pointing this out, as it is now and forever "its not us, its them". Self serving behavior at its worst.
If everyone adopted your us-vs-them mentality the only recourse would be to split the US into red and blue states.

I think everyone here is against them as well but you haven't made the case that a joke is as bad as real pedophile behavior. You also haven't accounted for the fact that people deal with uncomfortable subject matter in different ways. Humor and dark humor is often away to deal with serious issues in people's minds. The humor can take some of the rawness off it. Did you not read the link to the story where his friend talked about Gunn's own past with pedophilia but I would argue anyone can feel that way about difficult issue's or problems in your life. Humor can help with this stuff. I would point to the movie "Patch Adams" but I think I would rather uses examples were the jokes are funny.

That letter the cast wrote in his defense and the link you shared just make him look like a wimp who won't stand up for himself.
He comes across right now like he's hiding himself away, and that just makes it seem like he's in the same leagues as a #MeToo casualty.
If Gunn wants forgiveness he should do more than issue that single written statement and do a thorough on-camera interview, like on 60-minutes or 20/20.

Gunn getting fired for offensive tweets has nothing to do with your rights.
Why does the way someone apologize matter? Their is no need to make him jump through hoops just because his response isn't perfect with everyone because no matter what he does or did it for many it would still not matter. Then it would be that he didn't say the right words on his 60-minute interview or he laughs at something in the interview which seems disrespectful. Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do because people just won't forgive.

It matters to me to have him demonstrate some courage to get in front of a camera rather than to sit behind a keyboard and craft a carefully scripted apology and then retreat to some secret compound while his supporters fight for him by proxy. But hey, I guess I'm weird that way.

But aren't we talking about him sitting behind a keyboard? Weren't the trolls that brought him down doing the same? He doesn't owe us anything. He hasn't hurt us in anyway other than maybe being offended at his jokes which were all in the past. If anything people owe him a apology for getting him fired and making people think he is really a pedophile in real life. What's a worst "crime?" A offensive joke or loosing your job and having who knows how many people you think your a pedophile because people don't understand dark,edgy humor despite the concept being around just forever it seems. People can not be this obtuse when it comes to jokes and how they work.
