Diet & Fitness Support Thread

I'm now down 50lbs since November. On Friday I head up north for a week-long trip, involving a LOT of booze. I wonder how much I'll gain back?

So I went down about 20 pounds since this time last year, still got 15-20 left to go before my goal weight. I think I can manage it, my new job has been a real work out =/. Not to mention the amount of muscle I've gained from doing 200 stairs a day.

Congrats & good luck! I've found that if you do lapse and put on a few pounds, it's easier to lose them if you do it right away ... after a few months they seem to become a more permanent part of you. (Speaking from experience.)

So, I'm planning on running my first 5K in November. I've got my training plann all mapped out.

Good for you, CD! If you haven't found it already, MayMyRun.com is an excellent resource when you're running outside. I love the map/photo hybrid feature that lets you draw the route you plan to run right on aerial photos of your neighborhood (so you don't even have to stick with named roads ... I do a lot of cutting through fields & such, myself). That's the only way I'm sure of how far I'm running.

Back to the gym today ... we'll see how my shoulder is doing.

Thank you! I've been looking for lots of cool running sites. I do all of my running outside, mostly on a trail. If I wake up after the sun goes up or in the HIGHLY UNLIKELY event that it's raining () I'll use a treadmill.

Best of luck with the shoulder. :)

It's not a lapse... it's vacation!

Just got back from the Gym. Did a lot of sit ups, arm curls and building upper body strength in the shoulders, arms and chest. Weight is not that important but I am sitting at 194 ibs right now.

So, my running coach says my steps are too big. "But don't worry- we can fix it." He said that after he critiqued everybody. "You run on your toes...but that's okay because we can fix that."

I stocked up on running shorts. He wants us to start running five times a day, even short runs.

OK weight update: 254 pounds. Full 26 pounds less than my high in April. I'm up over 14lbs since taking my supplements and lifting however.

RAMA

Well, fuck. I went with his advice and did a 30 minute run Tuesday on the treadmill. I've had knee pain ever since. And I don't know if it was due to the treadmill, my shoes, my gait, or weak quads.

I still have tender knees. The doctor told me it was too much too soon. I'm going to have to drop out of the running training.

Oh, well. There's always swimming at the gym. :( :( At least I can walk the trail once a week and try to build up from there.

I'm sorry to hear that, CD. I had a similar experience with the treadmill some months back ... I was doing fine on the road (doing over 4 miles), but then I ran 3 miles on the treadmill one day because it was too hot outside, and the next day I was practically crippled. :( It took a month (and a lot of ibuprofen) to get back on track. I still avoid the treadmill.

^ Thanks. :)

It's really upsetting for me. I had a goal, was even working towards running my first 5K. But my body's letting me know that it's too much. The impact of even walking hurts my knees.

I'm going to just do a gradual walking to jogging to eventual running for the next few months. I've got the pool and stationary bikes to occupy myself with.

But I really miss running. I hate that I had to quit. :(

If it's a good treadmill, theoritically (due to shock absorption, and less force being sent through the body), it should be easier on the joints than hitting the pavement.

Anyhoo..

CD, if you want a good strength program to help you build and get ready for running, let me know - I'll help you out.

^A lot of that could just be water weight that you gained back. It's really hard to gain 10 lbs of mass in just a week.
