Diet & Fitness Support Thread

So a few weeks ago I hired a personal trainer - a competitive bodybuilder - to help me take my training to the next level. I have been perpetually sore since.

I recently joined an interdepartmental softball team. We had our third and fourth games today (a double-header) and won both. :)

I improved my batting average for the "season" to .308, too. :)

Well, our season ended prematurely, so I stand at 4-13 (a .308 average). Not as "impressive" or comment-worthy as what others in this thread do, but I had great fun, especially as I hadn't touched a glove or bat in years.

I did a yoga/ core conditioning session designed for runners who are participating in a marathon (uh, not me!). I didn't realize how highly runners think of yoga.
Not this runner!

But it feels good, doesn't it? ;)

I'm on vacation in SF and there's a very nice fully-equipped gym two doors down from the hotel. I got a great weight workout today and we're going again on Friday before we check out. I feel so virtuous! (Of course, I'm also eating like a pig ... so maybe not *entirely* virtuous.)

Oh well. You win some, you lose some.

We did lots and lots and lots of hip openers yesterday, so my core is sore as hell. I got up early this morning and did a 30 minute walk to help with the soreness, but I'm still hurting.

I've had to make an extended stay in Alabama, no work outs, fried food, it's going to be tough when I get back home...

So I got a little busy and stopped lifting again for 2 months. I didn't diet and still went from 280 to 245 pounds. This is mainly because I am active at work, and because I also lost muscle mass. I started lifting again the other day and I do prefer being at a lwoer weight in general. If I had stuck to my mass building program I would have lost the weight slower while still lifting. Ah the best laid plans of mice and men...

Things are going awesomely well after only one week, I'm on 20mg of Havoc and my workouts are amazing though I have determined I hate taking time off..ugh

Just got back from the gym at 9:15...Wow I feel great...anyone who doesn't workout needs to feel this!

I've been getting up early to do yoga and a 30 minute walk. I love doing something for myself first thing in the morning. And it's nice to not get up at the last minute for work and have to run around to get stuff done. :D

Hello all,

I'm trying to make an effort to go to the gym to work out and build muscle mass and lose calories. However, I'm not sure if I'm doing it right and most of the time after some instances, I don't stick with it. I'm about 190 Ibs and I am 24, but I feel like I have a body of a 17 year old and I'm not entirely liking the gut. I've always been trying to really take care of my face and back because I have an acne problem and I take the whole Proactive thing for that. My question is are there any tips to get started, work on a regimen, how many times I should go to the gym a week (I have a membership at 24 hour Fitness) and what to focus on. In terms of losing calories I have been using the elyptical but in terms of having a focused workout I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.

As for my diet, I consider it pretty good. I'm trying to cut back on Soda a lot, As well as I do eat fish maybe twice a week but is there anything I should avoid. I do eat a lot of fruit and I wonder if that is doing more harm to the skin than good. Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I've answered all questions, but if not than just ask away either here or through PM.

I did spend an hour at the gym today working on upper body, shiolders, arms, and doing sit-ups and push ups.

I'll defer to the others, but if you're having trouble sticking with a program, I'd take baby steps and just go for a couple of days a week at first.

I don't necessarily have a program. I guess it's more of how should I get started given what my goals are.

Okay, in that case.

As for the acne, have you tried the Body Clear acne wash by Neutrogena? It has sailicylic acid in it. You can use it in the shower, and most people recommend leaving it on for a few minutes or so. I had acne on my back a few months back and it cleared it right up.

I usually follow the muscle building advice that (I think) applies more to women. I've also been buying the food listed in this article for Runner's World.

I'm having to cut down on caffeine and sugar, but that's also due to fighting depression and a diabetis risk in my family. But I'm sure someone will bring up cutting down the sugar and caffiene.

Cool ... I'm already eating 13 of the 15 on that list. :)

I've found that the only weight-loss program that works for me is to eat frequent meals (every 2-3 hours) with as much protein as possible, and cut way back on carbs (especially simple sugars). And like Mom always said, "You can't eat too many vegetables." :)

I'm trying to lose a few pounds that I put on recently (too much summertime partying and vacation eating!) and I've dropped 3 lbs so far. Now if I could just stop injuring myself so I could get back to the gym I'd be all set ... My back is now better, and I screwed up my shoulder at work yesterday. Ouch. But I started running again. So far so good - no tendon pain after a 1.5 mile jog today. Hopefully I'll be able to get back up to my longer distances again soon.

I am Not. Eating. Sweet potatoes. The sweetness makes me want to puke every time I taste them.

The others I can go with. :D
 My only big "no" was whole-wheat pasta. That stuff is gross. I'll just skip pasta altogether before I'll eat the whole-wheat stuff. (I'm also not huge on salmon, but I eat a lot of tuna ...)

I'm actually quite fond of sweet potatoes, and I have a couple of extremely healthy casserole recipes that use them heavily. I even have a chili recipe that includes sweet potato - I sneak it in and people think they're eating carrots. :D
