New cardio plan:

Treadmill on an incline at a moderate speed.

I did it tonight after lifting for about 12 minutes, and it felt great. I'll probably work my way up to a half hour over the next couple weeks.

Man, it's been awhile since ive checked into one of these threads. Last incarnation it was still in misc if i remember correctly.

Hey TJ, wtg on your 1/2. You rock!

I'm still running as well. Did a 10 k this afternoon. Had my daughter along on her bike so it wasn't as fast as usual. I've been working on my speed when i run on my lunch breaks, and distance/endurance when i run after work. My lunch break runs i do 2 1/2 miles in 20 mins. I was shocked the one day when i got to my turning point in 7 mins. That was just over a mile! In 7 mins! I didn't think that was even possible.

I'm also still doing pushups as my meager strength training routine, though we start our membership at the Y next week so im looking forward to adding some variety.

On another note. Yes i know running is hard on the body, but my knee is really bothering me and i would like it to stop. Today i wore a tensor band for the very first time and it felt great, so i might do that again, or rather do that always..and get one for the other knee as well. Anyway, i'd really like for the pain to go away and to also continue to run. Can i have my cake and eat it too!?

I've decided shopping is my favorite cardio. I got four hours of walking in today with a while getting some "retail therapy" with a friend.

Thanks, HTH! Great to see you again. :)

Congrats on your running progress - I can only dream of reaching speeds like yours. I'm happy just to be able to run the distances I do without injuring myself.

And speaking of injury, if you find a solution to knee pain while running I'd love to hear it too. I do a variety of strength exercises, all the stretching I can manage, and I'm careful not to overtrain ... but I still have pain in one knee or the other on and off. I'm starting to suspect that I'm just getting too old for this and I'm going to have to give up the idea of running a marathon. Sigh.

The other annoying thing that's been happening since the race is pain in my sciatic nerve after I run - a very literal pain in the butt! Stretching helps some, but it's really bugging me.

Today was an active day. I did eighty minutes of cardio with light weights this morning then went kayaking with a friend this afternoon.

Hey folks, just thought I'd check in. I made it to the gym 5 times last week so I'm pretty pleased with that, however I have discovered that I really need to exercise my abs more often.

My wife and I have had very busy schedules the last few weeks and haven't been able to spend any "quality" time with each other. Well things finally slowed down and we spent some great "quality" time together yesterday and today my abs are sore! How embarrassing is that?

BMR is more accurate is a good place to start. Generally speaking, you should lower your calories 500-700 calories below the resulting total (if it is accurate) to lose weight. Here's a calculator:

After that you can plug in your macronutrients. This is essential to maintaining or increasing lean mass.

You don't have to be a bodybuilder to follow the numbers. A good food list to choose from is here:

I plugged in my numbers and compared it to what I was planning on eating throughout the day and I am over on protein and under on fat and carbs.

According to the calculator I should be taking in 2800 calories a day with 185g of protein, 47 grams of fat and 413 grams of carbs. My meal plan would give me 1900 calories with 220 grams of protein, 27 grams of fat and 185 grams of carbs. This is broken up into 4 meals, a protein shake after my workout and one before going to bed.

Should I be adjusting my numbers to fit? I want to lose weight while still increasing lean muscle mass.

Yesterday I did a spin workout in the morning then had pilates in the evening. Too bad I can only do that sort of thing on days off. :(

Good luck. For most people, it's nearly impossible to both of those at the same time.

I always try and suggest workouts that are fun.
For myself I am ballroom dance teacher when I started dancing I was 190 lbs and I lost 40 lbs in 3 months with only a half hour of dancing a day. I have tons of students that have complained about weight problems when they started and 2 months later had to buy all new clothes. Ballroom dancing burns 200 calories in 15 mins and there are tons of free instructions videos on youtube. It's a workout without knowing your working out :)

I'm back on the wagon. I do 15-30 min of cardo each weekday. We play tennis at the park, and since it's hotter than hell we're gonna have to come up with something indoors to replace it soon.

Then I do 2 weight lifting sessions (upper and lower body), 2 abs workouts and at least ony yoga session a week.

I did did a lot of walking today, as usual as i walk EVERYWHERE. I did West Ed for a good two hours. I came home and did the 200 stairs by my house about 3 times and then walked around for the rest of that hour.

At least the stairs dont take me that long anymore. I can do em in one shot depending on my mood.

No workout yesterday unless you want to count lifiting the spoon to eat some Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream. That stuff ought to be outlawed. ;)

Like those damn Milkshakes at the haagen daz ice cream store in New York. Evil, but so damn good.

Congrats, moocey!

I lost 2 lbs last week myself ... just eating healthier and smaller, more frequent meals. :) I should step up the cardio as well, but it's been too friggin' hot out there to run and I just hate the treadmill & machines at the gym. I did manage to get a 5 k run in before it got too dreadful yesterday morning, though.

In other news, I think I really injured my shoulder during my last weight workout. It's been over a week and many ibuprofen tablets and it's still killing me. I think I need to see a doctor. :(

Sorry to hear about the shoulder TJ, hope it's just minor.

4 days in the gym this week and another softball practice. I tried to do some infield(always wanted to play second base), but I suck. Outfield on the other hand is all good. Season starts in two weeks.

Thanks, Rev. I'm still pounding the anti-inflammatories ... I'll see what happens.

Second base is my spot!! That is my favorite position of all time for softball - I can't throw far enough to be an outfielder, and 1st gets too much action ... but second is just perfect. Plenty to do, and you don't have to throw too far. Plus you get to be a hero whenever there's a double play. (I did several unassisted double plays back when I played regularly.) I wish there was a team around here I could join. All the adult leagues are either super competitive or WAY too young for me. Sigh.

I am sorry about your shoulder TJ, do get bet mkay?

Ive been doing a lot more cardio lately, and by cardio i mean stairs and walking. I am not as in shape as you guys and cant run haha. I can pull off about 800 stairs at a time, well, within about 15mins, then a 45min walk. We'll see how this goes.
