DC to REBOOT???

I'm thinking at the end of Flashpoint #5 when the world gets reset, some of the characters are in a protective bubble and come out the same (probably Batman and Green Lantern) while the rest of them will suffer from a little "reality wall punching".

:lol::lol:
Just being reminded of that "story point" makes me laugh.

^ I think that's already happened on several previous occasions in comics in multiple companies. :)

Karen's origin since Infinite Crisis established her as the Kal-L's cousin has been pretty straightforward. I have enjoyed what Judd Winnick has been doing with her in her solo series. The crossovers with both Superman and the two Batmen have been fun. I am curious to discover what they will do with her in the relaunch.

Batman #1 has an artist. Greg Capullo (confirmed now). Still waiting on a writer.

Based on the covers to Justice League #1, Batman #1, and Justice League International #1 could we assume that Bruce and Dick are still Batman?? Bruce in the Justice League and in his regular book, while Dick perhaps in Detective and JLI?

I still can't believe JLI isn't being handled by G and dM and also Kevin Maguire just pay him what he wants. I mean, Dan Jurgens? There's a creator who speaks to the youth of today.

I was really disappointed with the news of Jurgens handling JLI.

As was I. When I was in middle and high school, I thought Jurgens was the best creator around. I really enjoyed his work on the Superman title, but I think somewhere along the way something changed. I can't tell if it was with me or his writing, but I could not get into his Booster Gold, though to be fair, Giffen and DeMatteis' run lost my interest as well.

Jurgens, to me, represents the less talked about side of superhero comics in the 90's. We all know about the excesses, such as the specialty covers and gimmicks (both with the covers and with the writing), but on the other hand, I think Dan Jurgens' writing remained too traditional. He worked on Superman at a time when the creators would spend just as much time on the secret identities as they did on the heroics. Not that this is a bad thing, in and of itself, but it lead to a lot of soap operatics, such as the period of time when Clark and Lois split up.

In 1996, Clark Kent's college flame, who just happened to be a mermaid, Lori Lemaris showed up again and sparked a rift between Clark and Lois. Lois got upset that she wasn't as independent as she used to be and took off, tired of Superman always protecting her. Final Night occurred, depowering Superman for a time and in some hackneyed occurrences, Lois returns, realizes Clark is still in love with her, but depowered, and agrees to not only reunite with him, but to actually get married.

Now this did occur when DC was issuing editorial edicts about the marriage to allow it to coincide with the marriage of Lois and Clark on Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, but it was still handled rather poorly. While it may seem a bit much to put the blame on Jurgens solely, he did write the flagship title at the time and I think he was the one who wrote the wedding issue.

I just find Jurgen's plots to be bland, along with his characterization. I do not have hopes for this title, despite the great lead-in with Justice League: Generation Lost and a decent premise.

I'm not a fan of Jurgens. Disliked his run on Superman in the 90's (despite liking some of the elements of Death of Superman).

Yeah, there were things Jurgens did, or helped do, that I thought were just amazing--namely, Panic in the Sky and the Death of Superman. Hell, he drew probably the greatest fight in the history of comics.* And were the Matrix Supergirl and Lex Luthor II his ideas, or Louise Simonson's, or what? In any event, I liked them.

But it's true that he's always been a little bland, and only got blander with age. Can anyone rattle off one Dan Jurgens line that they thought was especially clever or cool?** This in contrast to Giffen and deMatteis, who became bawdier. Even his art became blander! (In his defense, like Jim Lee, he's another victim of the kirlian aura school of computer coloring. SHINY!)

*Superman against Doomsday in Superman 75, of course. Close runner is Warlock vs. the Magus in Infinity War 6, and number 3 is Savage Dragon vs. Overlord in Savage Dragon 7. Did you guys know that comic still comes out? I sure didn't.
**Actually, I can, but only if Rip Hunter writing his psychotic ramblings on a chalkboard like a schizophrene counts.

The Superman books flailed badly in the post-Zero Hour period. Some of it was editorial -- the Clark/Lois relationship had to go on hiatus because of Lois & Clark. But there were also some underwhelming creative teams on the books, like Ron Frenz on Superman. Then we had the utterly absurd Superman Red/Superman Blue storyline, which was easily the nadir of post-Crisis Superman stories.

To be honest, I loved the "soap operatics" of early-90s Superman comics. I loved the really large cast of characters, I loved that there was a balance between Clark's life and Superman's life. From the engagement in Superman #50 though to about Zero Hour was, in my opinion, a nice era for the character.

I remember liking Superman Red/Superman Blue. Well, I liked the idea. It went on a little long. There's probably a reason why the original Silver Age story is like 20 pages.

And DC comics need more soap operatics. (Marvel comics probably need less, although really Fraction and Bendis do less soap operatics than they do failed sitcomedy. If you want a picture of the future of Iron Man, imagine a smug, annoying man talking at you forever.)

I blame Norm Rapmund's inking for the "blandness" of Jurgens' recent art. Pair Jurgens with Art Thibert or Brett Breeding, and his art is crisper.

That's actually probably more like it. Booster Gold does sort of work with shininess, but he's actually meant to be shiny.

I still say it could be simplified in an elegant way.

But that's what they all say, I guess.
The problem is that fans wont stop demanding "their" version of the character come back. And some of them get to write or edit comic books. ;) I'm sure even Atlantean Power Girl has fans. And then you have Silver Age Hawkman vs Hawkworld Hawkman vs GoldenAge Hawkman.... (Each one with fans who think thats the "real' Hawkman):scream:

Then there's poor little Donna Troy, who gets a new origin every time someone tinkers with Wonder Woman,

I dunno. The last time 10,000 people mattered, Xenophon was leading them north to the Black Sea.

This referring to Hawkman, of course; I doubt 10,000 people care about Donna Troy.

She is sort of ridiculous, too, though--I realize that she was basically created as a gaffe, but is it so hard? I really don't know enough to say for certain that the character's intricacies prevent it, but was it really impossible just to say, "Yeah, Donna Troy? She's from Themyscira, sure. She's Hippolyta's niece or something."

I guess that doesn't solve the problem of her arriving prior to Diana and being in the Teen Titans and fjdfoewrieownf

Back to Hawks, my solution (which was to make them serial reincarnators, which is what they already are) means all the versions exist. Just some of them are dead. Because bodies die! We've all read The Years of Rice and Salt, haven't we? That book is pretty great, but it did lack in mace-on-face action. Enter Hawkman. There's an awesome riff on that concept to be written involving Hawkman and Hawkwoman, but I will capture and eat the next hawk I see if Tony Daniel and Philip Tan* are the ones to riff on it.

*I'm conflicted about this dude. On one hand, his sequential art sucks. On the other, his single images can be great. Why isn't he a cover artist, while J.G. Jones and Adam Hughes are shackled to a drawing table/computer desk on the first of every month until they produce 22 pages, at which point they're set free (with explosive collars on to make sure they come back)?

Well. I did read The Years of Rice and Salt. Great Book!

No idea if Daniel and Tan will do the serial reincarnation thing. As you said, that was the schtick that Robinson and Johns ( plus those that followed) played with in the last go round. Including the Silver Age and Hawkworld versions in that "series" has a couple of problems:

1) They're aliens
2) There's not enough time between them for one to die, be reborn as the other and age to an adult.

Donna works okay when Wonder Woman appears first. The was the big mistake of the Perez reboot, making Diana a newbie. (The JMS run repeats that) Similarly, making Hawkman a newbie in the Hawkworld series was also a misstep.

The 10,000 matter when the one person making decision listens to or is one of them.

Aliens can have souls. It worked for Babylon 5, anyway.

2) There's not enough time between them for one to die, be reborn as the other and age to an adult.

I dunno. With a complete reboot, it's easy enough. Carter and Sheira Hall could die in the 70s. That's more than enough time for Katar and Shayera to get born on Thanagar and come to Earth in order to argue with Oliver Queen about fiscal policy.

People seemed to really respond to a mystical journey through history when it was Batman doing it. But maybe I just answered my own question about why when I said "Batman." Sigh.

The 10,000 matter when the one person making decision listens to or is one of them.

True, but that robs me of my insanely clever reference. Why do you want to rob me of my insanely clever reference? :(

What's amazing about Wonder Woman is that her most recent revamped is now scrapped before it's even concluded!

Has Nightwing ever used the red symbol before? I know that in the Batman and Robin movie it looked like that....
