DC to REBOOT???

Status
Not open for further replies.
I'm amused that fans are still calling this a reboot while bitching about how they should have done a clean reboot lol.

I'm not driven away, I'm somewhat pissed off about some stuff but I can see how this would drive fans away and that is something I've touched on about earlier in the thread. DC is alienating parts of their fan base while trying to attract an entirely new one.

Alienating suggests they won't buy. Upsetting, yeah, I see that.

My bet? The numbers bump up a bit, but then generally go back to what they were.

I'm alienated from being a monthly buyer of more books than I was.
I'm looking at 2-4 titles, down from 8-10.
Aquaman, Swamp Thing, JLA and Resurrection Man

I'm curious about plenty more but this is clearly a very big jumping off point for me and allows me to dive into TPBs more. Which I then can get at Amazon for 25-35% off or wait for the comic book shows where vendors regularly have material for 1/2 off retail thus making a trade way, way cheaper than the equivalency of the monthlies.

I also don't really buy the idea of red being the color of blood for every single one of the strange and bizarre species that populate the GL Universe.

Thank you! That shit drives me crazy.

The whole dumb thing does violence to the concepts of both emotions and electromagnetism, but the blood thing is probably the worst.

I keep on meaning to do a parody comic called "Malaise of the Microwave Lanterns," but it's not really topical anymore. Would they have great capacity for boredom, or inspire great boredom? Because sometimes it's one, and sometimes it's the other!

So, in addition to heating food, they could mildly disrupt cell phone communication and be banned from commercial air flight?

Now, can I ask if it is confirmed that the prices of one month old digital comics will be less?

You may ask.

That's a little joke.

DC mentions the pricing structure here.

Neil

Thanks.

The original Crisis on Infinite Earths alienated me as a reader; I briefly jumped back on board in 93 and 94 and then Zero Hour ticked me off.

This move, however, has me intrigued enough to get back on board, just because the comics are being released the same time as the printed comics.

And while DC is driving away many of its longtime readership with the reboot, it isn't driving everyone away and this still needs to remain their solid base of support.

Alex

ARE they though? How many have left? Or saying they are leaving?

Not enough to actually matter. Remember in '04 when the internet exploded with people claiming they were moving to Canada if Bush was reelected. Yeah, that happened.

DC will be fine.

One thing that I have mentioned a few times to people is that the big companies, including DC, should be offering a complete digital subscription to all comics newly released and in the archives.

How much should that subscription price be to be profitable and accessible? 150 dollars a year? 200? 300? How many would actually be interested in something like that? Would DC ever be interested do you think?

It's not. The red "blood" of the Red Lanterns is actually plasma generated by their rings. It's red for the same reason Green Lantern plasma is green.

Okay, sorry for that. I haven't really read the recent stories. The red plasma-puking kind of grosses me out though.

Archival subscriptions would, unless I am missing a huge part of the picture, be profitable at any price point, or a very minimal one that takes into account scanning things and hosting and stuff.

If I were DC, I'd throw it open for a nominal fee--maybe $10, 25, $50 tops, for thousands of old books, like pre-2000 or even 1990 books, to get people excited about the characters and less resistant to the idea of spending $3-4 a pop on newer books.

I've said before they've got to figure out a fair price for their back catalogue. They have not done that yet; I'm not sure they're trying. The steps they've made to make their back catalogue available smack of gougey pricing, for books that are often more historically significant than they are actually good.

And when I say fair, I mean fair in a business sense, too--a price that has broad appeal. I think at a reasonable price point, you'd get a lot more subscribers and thus a larger potential audience, which should be their goal. And the beauty is production costs would remain almost completely static. Let's smugly assume an demand elasticity of a bit more than -1 here: 100,000 subscribers at $10 is worth (very much almost) as much money as 10,000 at $100, but gives ten times the number of potential readers who may be stirred to give a crap about the new, rightfully-expensive product.

I believe DC's (and Marvel's) back catalogues are best seen as an advertisement that people will pay a modest sum for.

Now, Marvel has a 60 dollar a year fee for everything over six months I think. That would be really nice for DC.

I agree with what you are saying Myasishchev, but I am sure that there are many of us who would pay a larger fee for an "elite" membership that gives us access to everything.

Both DC and Marvel are really missing the boat here by not offering a variety of subscription packages I think.

Always the 64,000 dollar question. DC's not going to lose one half of one percent of its current readership over this. If everyone who's saying on the Internet that they're dropping their DC comics actually did so - and they all won't - it would be a drop in the bucket.

I'm not even saying I wouldn't pay what you were suggesting. I'd love to read LSH starting from the beginning. And the beginning. And the beginning.

I don't have the time to read all the DC comics I would love to read, but I would be willing to pay for the convenience of reading anything at any time.

The New Yorker has set a great precedent for this by making the magazines entire catalogue available digitally by subscription. And a pretty reasonable subscription as well.

Just a heads up I got one of my books in the mail from DC and I see that a lot of the new titles are now available for subscription direct from DC. It's great if you only want to read one or two books a month and don't live near a comic shop like myself and don't mind getting your books a little later after the release date.
Thanks for the info:techman:
I can now cancel my order from the comic shop..and actually save some money from ordering from DC:cool:

I now harbor doubts about how much of current Batman continuity will carry over into the DCnU. Batman, 'Tec, and Batman and Robin didn't end their DCU runs at all how I expected them to. Not only does Dick not give up the cowl in any of these books, but there's no indication that he's going to give up the cowl. Unless there's an unexpected ending in Gates of Gotham next week, I don't see how we get from Dick-Batman to Dick-Nightwing in a coherent way.
