DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

Are the voices praising the film in any way overwhelming the negative voices? Or a lot of radio silence?
No.

Because the focus is purely on the box office. That's 90% of the posts I read in this thread and the review thread. The actual reviews are usually mid tier and a somewhat enjoyable adventure film.

But the box office has become the horse being whipped to drag the conversation and, good grief, is it incredibly dull. Then it's reading how people who praise the film are in a fantasy land because of the box office.

Actially, i meant all over the internet/ society.

The Box Office is an indicator, at least for movies, the probability a sequel/further installments of the franchise might move forward, or the probability that WB will stop/change directions. SO it's not just the movie in and of itself, but the bigger picture of a DC Omni Universe (as this is supposed to encompass way more than just films, but also live action TV, animation and even games)

In the case of TV...the ratings but also the buzz about it (positive vs. negative) ... the difference between getting a 3rd season of TOS vs. a third season of Starfleet Academy (yes, some major diffrences in methods between 60 years, but i think you understand what i mean).

This is really the only place I discuss DC so I can't speak for that. I do think the hyper fixation on the box office and growing the universe is an indication of the larger problem facing films and TV. A film can't just be a film but must be a series, or else it's a failure. It can't just be an enjoyable film in its own right. There's this fixation on numbers that reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes and Calvin's comment about how if you're numbers go up you must be having more fun.

It strikes as way too much of a competitor mindset that I just don't share. I'm not driven to compete, compare or seek better numbers stacked against another when it comes to my entertainment.

I for one am saying it doesn't seem like it's worth my money to spend on, nor time to go out to the theater. It could turn out like my thoughts on Thor.... didn't feel like it was worth watching in theater, but when i get a cheap and convenient way to see it, I probably will.

The thing is...it isn't just me or a couple of random people on the internet - it's the moviegoing public.

Sure, box office isn't necessarily a exact indicator on quality.....but it's a decent guage...and it's certainly the indicator for executives to keep on making movies from that genre/moviemaker/etc. So the box office might not be the driver for you to see it or not... but it WILL affect future films.

Are the voices praising the film in any way overwhelming the negative voices? Or a lot of radio silence?

it's not the final nail in the coffin of the DC OU, but it's certainly an indicator. Like i said, if Clayface does really well, this will be like the Incredible Hulk...a blip on the way. And Man of TOmorrow would be a bigger indicator
You dont have to have seen a movie to speculate if its a success or not because numbers don't lie. You also don't need to see a movie to speculate on the franchises future for the same exact reason. How good a movie is or isnt is a different story, but I dont see anyone here who hasn't seen it saying its garbage.

If speculating on movies gets someone's knickers in a twist, then they need to be the ones to GTFO.

And I check so many sites and sources and reviews from 'the moviegoing public' and it's all over the place. People like it, love it, hate it, find it ok, entertaining, boring....

You look where you want to look. And find the feedback you need secure your viewpoints. I've seen so many different reviews that I am curious. Not judgmental. And that is what is happening with a few close minded people here.
"I haven't seen it but my opinions are valid from trailers I have seen and opinions I have read from others. So I am correct."

I'm more than done with that boring bullshit. Honestly.... The YouTube app on my phone won't open. I find that more interesting that most of the opinions in this thread.

There is a change that in a few weeks I will post that I disliked this movie. But I will at least have formed that opinion on my own AFTER seeing it.

Fuck numbers. You care about financial success. Good for you. I care about whether I like the movie or not. Fuck the franchise. That's for people who care about money. I just want a movie I like. And if I didn't, I'll shrug and find something I did.

Stop making a big deal out of it man, it's a fucking superhero movie. We've got real life issues in the world right now. DC and Marvel movies need LESS time being argued about.
Fuck it, if everyone in the world spend 15% of the time you guys spend on the internet being happy that Supergirl bombed into achieving world peace, we'd be the goddamned UFP right now. But no... You need to wank off about gloating that the Gunn DCU sucks. Wow.....

It's 22:31 hours where I live, and I got work in the morning. I'll probably wake up in the morning with a ban on this forum, either temp or permanent. Cool by me.

We've all stated our opinion on the movie. The conversation has moved way past that.

If you want to talk real world issues then go visit TNZ. Why the F are you in a DC discussion thread if you don't care about the discussion?

Whose gloating? You must have me mixed up with a different poster. I said I enjoyed the movie and gave it a B minus in the poll. I also enjoyed Superman and have said Im looking forward to the sequal. But that doesn't mean Im blind to how bad Supergirl did and shouldn't speculate on the future of the franchise. Since when did that became a no no around here? Its only been going on since ....forever.

If you hate internet speculation on movies "because there are more important things in life" then avoid movie threads and stick to TNZ. Stop trying to tell people what they can and cant discuss. You arent the forum police.

Okay, seems like people need to cool off. @Mage going to bed at this time might be a good idea, hopefully he'll be in a better mood in the morning.
That said, he does have a point. We're way past the point where everybody knows Supergirl is a financial bomb, so unless there's a miraculous change in the box office trend of this movie, we don't really need further updates on it in this thread (that would be what the box office thread is for). Dissecting the movie and why it bombed is a matter for the Supergirl movie thread, as it undoubtedly involves spoilers.

Now, the legitimate discussion for this thread in the fall-out of Supergirl bombing is consequences for the future of the DCU.
And personally, I think while it might be a call for attention for Zaslav (or David Ellison, depending on how the merger process will go), Gunn and Safran, to maybe choose their projects and what goes to theaters and what goes to streaming and how to budget their movies, it is not yet a doom and gloom situation. There are four DCU projects that are already sure to be released. The Lanterns series, Clayface, season 2 of Creature Commandos, and Man of Tomorrow. So, if Gunn & Safran will keep heading DC Studios, whether their universe will continue or whether another reboot is on the horizon, that will be decided on how those four projects will be doing.

I definitely agree @Kai "the spy" that these next projects will be ciritical... though unless they break incredible records for streaming (like Peacemaker did?), I am not sure if it will move the needle either way....unless Lanterns looks like the first half of the FLash Gordon live Action series. But Gunn will be happy to have the creatiev freedom of Creature Commandos at least 1 last time

I am hoping that this sale means David Zaslav doesn't care anymore (he got his money), and will stop interfering.

I asked Google
does david ellison interfere with his studio's creative work?

And here's what it said
David Ellison generally takes a filmmaker-first approach rather than interfering with the creative process. Under his tenure at Skydance Media and Paramount, he has actively positioned himself as an ally to creators, even writing public open letters to the industry committing to theatrical distribution and artistic autonomy. [1, 2, 3]
However, his leadership has still faced scrutiny and raised questions about control in specific areas: [1, 2]
  • Creative Focus: At Skydance, Ellison built the company by partnering with established auteurs and major talent, offering director-driven deals rather than strict corporate mandates. He has committed to multi-picture agreements and long-term partnerships to nurture talent. [1, 2, 3]
  • Journalistic & News Interference: While he has publicly assured correspondents that news divisions like CBS 60 Minutes and CNN maintain editorial independence, his close ties to the Trump administration and controversial hires (such as Bari Weiss to run CBS News) have sparked concern among newsroom staff and lawmakers regarding political and corporate pressure. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Business Direction: Although he largely respects the filmmaking side, his massive consolidation and restructuring efforts—such as the massive layoffs following the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition—have led some in Hollywood to question if his administrative vision prioritizes corporate efficiency over the livelihood of the creative
I ain't taking it as gospel or anything, but hopefully this will be true (the cretaive focus part, i mean)

the DC OU
The what now? Did I miss a memo? When did it get changed by DC Studios from DCU?

What? Waiting until you’ve experienced something before pronouncing judgement?! HERESY [/Zod].

He comes up with his own terms for the different DC universes for ???? reasons. The most confusing was the DCFU, brain instantly went to DC Fuck You. Which. Fair.

I'm sorry but this is driving me absolutely nuts, like throw my computer across the screen every time I see it nuts, the current DC shared univers is the DCU, the DC Universe, and the last one was the DCEU, the DC Extended Universe. That's it those are their names and they are their only names. I've seen this multiple people so I'm not singling any one person out here, but it is a weird trend I've noticed. Everybody has no problem calling Marvel's shared universe MCU/Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for some reason people seem to really struggle to call DC's universes by their names. It started with the Arrowverse, where people referred it as The CWverse and other names like that, the people called the DCEU all sorts of other names, I know some were jokes but not all were, and now I keep seeing people call Gunn's DCU by other names. I know it's a minor things, but it really really bugs me.

edit - And of course Clayface is coming. Is Clayface in continuity with Superman, Supergirl, and Peacemaker S2? I have no idea.
I don't know how connected it will be to other projects, but Clayface is meant to be part of the main DCU.
Part of Supergirl’s lack of enthusiasm I think had to do with her introduction.
I liked her introduction in Superman, and that had me really looking forward to her movie.

It's really not any kind of a gauge of quality, it's a gauge of how interested people are in a movie, but that doesn't necessarily have anything at all to do with their quality.

True but the worst of Gunn-DCU defenders have spent the past week+ changing positions / moving goal posts to tell everyone that meager earnings as seen with Supergirl are a good thing.
This is an untruth.

The kindest way to describe it is unobservant.

Yeah, I've seen people say it's not an absolute disaster, but I haven't seen anyone say a good thing.

In it's current state it's more "DC F'd Up"

2nd reboot/launch of it's cinematic universe and it's already showing signs of gangrene.
