Cut the quips

No. The quips help make them feel like emotionally realistic characters and not cardboard cutouts.
Quips are not realistic. Marvel movies were always different from The Batman Nolan movies that were perceived to be more realistic or grounded as they had less quips or told jokes every 3 minutes like the Marvel films.

I don't know. Check out any number of classic movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood: "All About Eve," "Bringing Up Baby," "Mystery of the Wax Museum," "The Lady Eve," the entire "Thin Man" series with Nick and Nora Charles, etc.

Delicious snark and sarcasm has been entertaining audiences for forever. It's not a new thing.

Is anyone else sick of the constant rain of clever/snarky comments everyone makes before doing anything in this show? I feel a more serious approach would greatly improve SNW.

The quip are definitely used to keep the show light hearted.

You and I live in different realities. Most days st work there are multiple quips. I've not worked in a place without it.

Also, Marvel films are not the first to use quips to balance out the dramatic moments. It's disingenuous to lay that at Marvel's feet.

Bravo!

Now get out!

You're much too modern quipping left right and centre like that. I don't like it and I want it to stop. Everybody is having far too much fun.

"Humor. It is a difficult concept. It is not logical." Or, apparently, realistic or professional.

Apparently, a part of modern Star Trek fandom has evolved beyond fun. Those who enjoy humor must be the atavistic "throwbacks" who comprise Starfleet in Roddenberry's novelization of THE MOTION PICTURE, or what I like to call "Gene's Previous Vision™" until TNG.

Father Mulcahy wants to have a word with you about the jocularity in the O.R., Colonel.

A lot depends on the characters. In THE MARVELOUS MRS. MEISEL, Midge can't stop cracking wise even in the most stressful or emotionally devastating moments; it's her default mode and coping mechanism, which she couldn't turn off if she tried. It's her gift and her curse, as they say.

On the other hand, when I was writing the UNDERWORLD books years ago, I had to keep reminding myself that Selene was not Buffy; Selene has no sense of humor and does not make quips -- even though I kept wanting to give her some because I like writing funny dialogue. :)

Unrelated but in trying to find an appropriate clip of a quip I stumbled upon this gem:

Had an assistant manager who was the same way who worked with me.

It reminds me of friends of mine in the medical field who say their days are filled with quippy "gallows humor" that often gets rather dark. They try to be careful not to do this within earshot of any patients or visitors because they would think it's inappropriate and offensive. But the public simply doesn't have the same frame of reference, and doesn't get that this kind of stuff keeps you sane when you're knee-deep in trauma and tragedy for hours on end, day after day.

And if the Nolan Bat-films are being used for comparison, they had plenty of quippy gems.
A: "I have kids to feed!" B: "What, they don't like falafel?"
"Nice coat."
A: "I seem to remember firing you." B: "You did. I got another job... yours."
A: "What's the difference between you and me?" B: "I'm not wearing hockey pads!"
"Carbon fiber, 28 caliber, made in China. If you want to kill a public servant, Mr. Maroni, I recommend you buy American."
"Let me get this straight. You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands? And your plan is to blackmail this person? [meaningful pause while the other guy squirms] Good luck."

Same. I've worked in the mental health field and dealing with human tragedy on a daily basis lends itself to a certain style of humor. I also have seen it in retail and heard it from my mom who is in the medical field, as well as my uncle who served in the military. The things people do to stay sane are not strict somber measured responses, though that can happen. It often times involves a very different sense of humor to cope with the pain.

Quips are not realistic.

Yes they are. Now, certain stylizations of quippery could be unrealistic, but quips in general are. As @fireproof78 noted, quips are especially common amongst people in tight-knit teams in high-pressure situations. And of course, being emotionally realistic is sometimes different from formal Realism/Naturalism.

Marvel movies were always different from The Batman Nolan movies that were perceived to be more realistic or grounded as they had less quips or told jokes every 3 minutes like the Marvel films.

"I suppose they'll lock me up as well. As your accomplice."

"Accomplice? I'm going to tell them the whole thing was your idea."

Definitely. As Dr. Sidney Freedman famously said on M*A*S*H, "Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice... Pull down your pants, and slide on the ice."

No, don't actually do that. It's just an expression.

I normally have a great deal of time for the OP, I even kind of get what he's saying. Ie: I'd like the humour to be toned down.

I'm alright with that.

Seriously though, it's not a) a modern thing or FFS b) a Marvel thing. Anyone who thinks so has their head up their ass and has a seriously limited palette when it comes to their entertainment. If I had to make a list of movies or TV shows from the last 100 years that have witty characters forever quipping I'd be here all night.

I'll just leave a few things here from over the decades:

That's not even getting into the 21st century. So as not to be, you know, 'modern'.

Just curious: Did you mean to respond to my comment about vintage Hollywood movies? It's quoted in your post, but not replied to. Wondered if your reply got deleted by accident.
