Is anyone else sick of the constant rain of clever/snarky comments everyone makes before doing anything in this show? I feel a more serious approach would greatly improve SNW.

    Seems OK to me.

And it's not like everybody's talking like that. Ortegas, sure, but that's an important part of her character.

A reflection on the times they live in, perhaps. Wars and Galaxy Ending Crises in the rear view mirror have given everyone a lighter, less rigid frame of mind.

There are obviously people sick of the quips. I am most emphatically not one of them. Why should the Kelvin Timeline have a monopoly on snarky quips in modern Trek?

No. The quips help make them feel like emotionally realistic characters and not cardboard cutouts.

Welcome to the modern age: sarcasm/snark is the new norm.

Dealing with knowing how you're going to die and still trying to live your life sounds like some pretty serious business to me... besides, the cast seems well e-QUIP-ped to handle some flippancy...

    Ever watched M*A*S*H?
Ever interacted with people outside a computer screen?
People make jokes. People make quips. People are snarky and sarcastic, especially in professional environments in which they spend a lot of time together and, on ships and in firehouses, even live together. People are not Borg drones.

    Who doesn't love a good, old-fashioned Spock/McCoy sarcasm fest?

Um ..no? I'm a fan of witty banter. As someone who does not act seriously in most circumstances, it makes characters feel more human when they do the same.

Right...other shows rarely had sarcasm or snark...until the modern age of TV.

It's not a modern age thing at all, it's been a thing for decades.

Doesn't bother me. I love it when characters talk like normal people -- but wittier.

Bright, quippy dialogue enhances scenes and, as noted by others in this thread, brings out the humanity in the characters.

It's like the story about when the actual USAF Chief of Staff was filming his cameo on Stargate. While on set, he was chatting with Richard Dean Anderson who asked him if there were any Colonels in the USAF who were like Jack O'Neill. The answer was "there are many who are exactly like O'Neill and many more who are much worse."
