News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

My region is now officially considered Covid-free. An announcement of moving to phase 3 of reopenings is expected to happen on Monday.

We've had 67 cases, 65 recoveries and two deaths. The last person to have it recently recovered.

Congrats, and I hope it stays that way. But be careful, recovery may not mean someone can't still have the virus (you never know).

Yep, I know. Or rather the region knows as it's been very diligent and careful about opening up too early. The Province has been doing it on a case-by-case basis, so for instance, Toronto is not opening up at the same phase as we are, as they will be going to phase 2 this week, I believe. We've taken a wait and see approach, which seems to be working pretty well for us. For over a month, we'd been at 64 cases, until the two others trickled in.

On Thursday, I dined at a restauraunt with a patio, as those offering dining are only allowed if they are able to provide a patio.

How "northern" Ontario are you?

Well, I'm considered to being in Northeastern Ontario, so not the far reaches such as Moosenee. I'm far enough that while my city itself is big, it has a fairly large sprawl with large areas of it quite rural, which I think is what has helped contain it. I feel lucky for that. We do tend to have very cold winters though as we're a city surrounded by lakes. I'm give or take, roughly 6hrs hours away from Toronto.

I had a couple generations of ancestors born in Elgin before great grandad went to Saginaw MI, so about as far south as one can get and still be in Canada.

Here's why it would be terrifying to open the border between the U.S and Canada. You can clearly see the sharp contrast between both countries and how well they've handled things, and I think opening them would end up overwhelming us. We don't want the risk.

It's too bad the Canadian data isn't location-based like the US data appears to be, instead of just dropping our entire case dot in what I assume is the geographical centre of each province.

Yes, The-Middle-of-Nowhere, Quebec, is a huge hot spot...

Yeah, that's a bit odd, considering each district health center has reported its own data since it began, so the data is there, but maybe it's an issue of not having access to that data. The source was John Hopkins University, which is U.S based, which might mean they didn't have access to that data and can only approximate.

I took a look at the link to John Hopkins University which leads to an interactive map, and I don't know how they get their data, but there are a lot of other countries such as Russia who few dots in comparison, which appears a bit like Canada in that map, so not exactly a big fan of that interpretation. It's kind of vague to the point of being useless unless you get more precise data.

At some point the rest of the world will just build a big dome over the US.

How are people’s comfort levels with different levels of socializing? I’m at the point where I think outdoor socializing with masks distancing when possible and not touching the same things is totally fine. At least risk mitigated to less than the threshold we lived with before COVID.

It seems like I get another news alert about hand sanitizers to avoid, at least every other day. Don't these companies know anything about quality control?
