News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

Unemployment benefits only pays a small portion of a person's wages. People don't even know this LOL!

And it does nothing to help the business.
At all.
And the hypocrisy, you and you over there, you two close your doors, but you there and you other person over there, grocery store workers making $10.00 an hour, you still need to report to work.
So a cashier at a grocery store making chicken feed wages is supposed to go to work and stand there with hundreds of customers a day hacking spittle droplets towards them, while a waitress at a restaurant, needs to just stay home.
My head is exploding.

I saw online that MItt Romney is floating the idea to send every American Working Adult a $1000 check to help with this crisis.
The only problem with that is it'll probably take six months or more to enact and then send out the checks.

Who pays for the $1000.00?
That's the problem.
Is Mittons Romney going to write us each s check from his personal checking account?

Yeah, essentially They just write it off in the hopes it keeps the economy from tanking completely.

It would also be a small stimulus to the Stock Market.

Seriously?! The US government just spent $ 1.5 TRILLION on saving Wall Street from COVID-19, I think the "How you gonna pay for it?" argument is out the window at this point.
Doesn't closing everything effect the economy if every country taking part in that particular festivity?
They are closing stuff all ivef Europe.
What about small business owners in Italy, France, Germany?
Are the landlords in those places just not going to pay their mortgages? Are their employees not going to have to pay their rent or mortages? Are the banks going to not pay interest on accounts?
All of this is insane. All of it.

Yep ... first time for everything.
We'll just have to see who ends up screwing who.

How can the US government do that?
My cousin owns a small deli, if the make her close down for a whole it will screw up so much in her personal life as well as with her company. Can't pay car payment, mortgage, buy food, etc.
Her stock could go bad, her employees won't be getting paid so that can effect their lives, no money for , food, tent, car payments, medicin, auto gasoline etc.
She couldn't pay rent for her shop, make enough To to buy more product...
How can the government just DO that to people?

The US government itself hasn't done this. It's actually the three state governments in this case. Federalism makes sense here because the virus is unevenly distributed.

As for how they can do this, health emergency powers are pretty broad. Whether the policy is wise or not is a separate question. In effect, we're trading economic damage for physical harm. I can see the case for saying that this is a bad tradeoff.

I do wonder how far this will go, closures, lockdowns and such.

Since a significant percentage of the population don't have the financial resources to "ride it out" as far as food, rent, etc, what will the various governments do?

So far all the various levels of governments in the western world seem to do is announce closures of businesses, services and borders.

It's all well and good that, for example, telecom companies are giving unlimited data or some sports teams are still going to pay arena staff but who is helping the rest of the people living pay cheque to pay cheque?

Well X amount of people may not die from having a lockdown, but a greater number of X will probably loose houses, businesses, cars etc. That would ruin alot more. More suicides as well.
