News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

Joe Rogan has a scientist talk about the virus. He says that we are screwed and washing your hands is kind of useless and we are in for some seriously bad times. But he's optimistic, we will (mostly) get through it.

humans are like roaches in that respect :D From the pov of a biologist we are very hard to extinct (unless we do it ourselves which isn't all that unlikely).

I find it a reasonable tactics that in emergencies the government can shut private companies down. Regardless of what Kirk said, the benefit of the many is more important than the benefit of a few. We don't want people dying only to secure other people's profit.

NPR had an interesting piece on misinformation being spread through social media. Among the misconceptions that keep getting passed around are bogus treatments or "cures" that are useless and/or harmful, and downplaying the seriousness of the issue.

In other news over the weekend, it came out that certain individuals went around buying up entire stocks of hand sanitizer as soon as the news of the first death in the US hit, for resale at exhorbitant prices. One guy ended up stuck with nearly 18,000 bottles because Amazon put a stop to this kind of price gouging, so now he has nowhere to sell it.

Germany is shutting down, folks. All theaters, public swimming pools, libraries, sport centers, bars, as well as most stores (with some exceptions like grocery stores and pharmacies) are to be closed.

I'm at work right now. I've called the manager at home who, of course, had not heard yet, and needs to check the news out himself and then apparently talk to the owner. *Sigh*

So, I'm sitting here, waiting for his call to shut the doors and go home.

Parts of the US too. The tri-state area -- New York City and the neighboring states -- is apparently closing all restaurants except for takeout, bars, movie theaters, and gyms at 8PM. Other places already have.

How can the US government do that?
My cousin owns a small deli, if the make her close down for a whole it will screw up so much in her personal life as well as with her company. Can't pay car payment, mortgage, buy food, etc.
Her stock could go bad, her employees won't be getting paid so that can effect their lives, no money for , food, tent, car payments, medicin, auto gasoline etc.
She couldn't pay rent for her shop, make enough To to buy more product...
How can the government just DO that to people?

Yes, it sucks, but this is an emergency situation. Now, a good government would spend money to make sure people don't lose their livelyhood over this. I've heard Tulsi Gabbard is trying to get an emergency UBI passed, so there might be some hope there.

Forget about toilet paper. The Netherlands are closing their sex shops and coffee shops. People are queuing for weed now:

Now there's a really smart thing to do...
Let's stand in line for hours, about 2 feet away from someone who we don't know and could be spreading the virus just by existing in near proximity ...

Supposedly he donated it all to one of his local churches now.

How can the US government do that?
Almost all the Governors of the US States have Emergency Powers granted to them by the individual state legislatures that can be called into use during extreme cases.

Kinda-sorta think this particular instance qualifies.

My big question is, will The Donald declare Martial Law and try to become an actual Dictator?

That's even scarier than the Virus.

Unemployment benefits only pays a small portion of a person's wages. People don't even know this LOL!

And it does nothing to help the business.
At all.
And the hypocrisy, you and you over there, you two close your doors, but you there and you other person over there, grocery store workers making $10.00 an hour, you still need to report to work.
So a cashier at a grocery store making chicken feed wages is supposed to go to work and stand there with hundreds of customers a day hacking spittle droplets towards them, while a waitress at a restaurant, needs to just stay home.
My head is exploding.

I was at a local Wally World Friday, the cashiers are all wearing gloves and had hand sanitizer.
There were signs up as you go in asking folks use a credit/debit card to make purchases if possible.

Yeah, but it will eventually cross his mind, if it hasn't already.
Hopefully, the Senate GOP will finally get a backbone and push back on that kind of thinking.

As things continue to deteriorate (and they will) the President's state of mind will also become more destabilized.
He can't live with failure ... at all.

I really doubt that you are a mind reader or have vision into the future.

"Sources familiar with the President's thinking..."

k.

Very True.
I'm 62 years old and work in a hospital, I'm not even sure if I'll survive this.

But, it doesn't take a mind reader or psychic to know that The Donald is not the most stable person around, nor that he can't handle failure.
He's already denied publicly that any of this is his fault.

BTW: Please don't twist the meaning of my words...
"Sources familiar with the President's thinking..."

I'm expressing my own thoughts about how things are going/may go.
No where in my post did I indicate that I was privileged with inside knowledge about what's going on.
I'm simply going by what he has already said and how he has acted in the past.

There's no sense in denying that the man has no clue beyond his own self interests.

That's happened in the USA.
I'm shocked that the government can tell private companies to close their doors.
I mean in the USA. I'm unfamiliar with how other countries operate.
But in the USA, I find this shocking.

It's called governing and making decisions that keep citizens safe and to lower the curve of infection. It's a good call. The less people out there, the less there's possibility of spreading. I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened sooner.

Today, the gym chain I belong to has decided to close all of its locations across Canada and all those who work there will continue to be paid in the interim.
