The timeline of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT
I can't speak for Dennis, but I think he's riffing on the idea that Star Trek has really been reboot multiple times (films, TNG, TNG films, ENT, nuTrek, etc.) and that any connectivity between each iteration is actually more tenuous and abstract than most insist it is.

One could even go so far as to say each show and film exists with in its own bubble, as there is very little substantial on-screen interconnectivity.

Yep, pretty much.

I like the Netflix trailer better, BTW - at least it's got a little style to it.

Honestly, the show looks really cool but there's nothing content-wise in the trailer to get excited about. The lead didn't make a strong impression on me - no one did, but that's not necessarily the actors' fault: they're not given any worthwhile material to play, here. No engagement or conflict between characters on a personal emotional level. It's composed almost entirely of tension-charged Star Trek Boilerplate:

"Transport us up!"
"Detecting warp signatures!"
"We've engaged the Klingons!"
"...your own command."
etc, etc.

The only point at which one character challenges another is just the usual Trek argument between officers in different roles over tactics: "We don't shoot first / We have to."

We're not people, we're Starfleet officers dammit!

It's automatic writing. A fan can do it. Bo-o-oring!

Just listen to the trailer without watching it, and the message is: not a single thing has changed since the last time Trek was on television. What is Star Trek about? It's about Star Trek, and that's all it's about.

Now, that probably won't turn out to be true of the show. This teaser isn't a particularly slick marketing piece, it's just a first look that may be intended to communicate exactly the message that Star Trek is back and exciting in slick, high-energy way. People close to the thing are insisting that it's a bit heavier and different from oldTrek, so we'll see.

One minor trivial note, in the displaying the incoming Klingon warships, the constellation seen is Ursa Majoris.

I will probably see the series when it airs later this year. Though I am on the fence with the show, I see it as a positive sign that CBS has added two episodes to the first season.

Same here. So far I still havent emotionally connected to this new show. It still leaves me cold.

I have responded more emotionally to the Orville trailer. It feels more Star Trek to me.
Orville had nice fx, but yes, it was overlit, bland and not very detailed. The exact opposite of the DSC trailer. So it kind of looks like the trek some people want: old, obsolete trek. Thankfully, we're not getting that.

No comparison here really:

I really liked what I saw. I still think it's a reboot but maybe you can call it a secret reboot which is why they still want to say it's in the prime universe. Frankly I'm not even sure why they want it in the prime universe. Why hold yourself down with canon issue's if your show doesn't even really feel connected to the other shows? Makes more sense to be the complete focal point of a whole new setting.
The overall look is awesome though I am not sure if I like the Klingons. Someone above mentioned something about them looking like Africans or something and I got to admit what we saw did feel a little racist to me. Would have helped if we got more from them than a yell and one of them swinging a sword.
As for SMG I still worry if she can carry a show. I think she is a good actress but my idea I mentioned awhile back in another thread about the Discovery captain becoming more of a star or even Yeoh still seems like a possibility.
I do have a theory on how the pilot episode might play out. In the teaser we see the captain and SMG talking about her getting her first command. My theory is the Klingons will attack and something bad and maybe even tragic will happen and the SMG ends up taking alot of the blame which means she doesn't get a command. I also think she might get injured in the attack which is why we see her in that decon chamber. Also it means that the Doug Jones ability to predict death comes true because someone dies in this attack.
We then flash forward, maybe even a few years, and we see SMG being assigned to her new ship the Discovery and of course the Klingons will return and we will see her redeem herself in some way.

So, here's what I'm thinkin':
  • "Unknown object" could be long-rumored "sarcophagus" ship, as there was a sarcophagus on-board, not to mention non-augmented Klingons.
  • Shenzhou crew appears to be the Discovery crew, except for the captain. Death that Saru senses? Georgiou. Starfleet sends in Lorca to take over, and ship is re-christianed the Discovery NCC-1031.
  • Burnham grew up on Vulcan.
  • Uniforms are like TNG and DSVGR uniforms, I guess?

These mirror my thoughts exactly. However, I don't think the Shenzhou is re-christianed, I think it bites the dust. I also think the uniforms look more like Enterprise uniforms. A bit of the standard blue jumper and T'Pol's catsuit with raised shoulders.

A few more points:

- Burnham does indeed seem to have some relationship with Sarek/Vulcalns. I got the impression she's been raised to be a bridge of sorts between species, or at least Sarek's hopeful of that, based on his dialogue; "great unifier". There's also her delivery of the line "it would be... irresponsible to leave whatever that is unknown... and of course there's her haircut.

My initial reaction to the trailer was a slight disappointment with regard to the design, dialogue and the quality of the special effects and makeup.

Design: Apart from its ship designs, I've always felt Trek has never been able to really nail a unified and iconic look (though the TNG - DS9 era came very close). There was something garish about the look of the trailer, this first popped up when the new logo was revealed and seems to have carried through to the production design. The intense golds, silvers, blues and blacks and heavy textures and patterns. However, this sort of ties in to the look of TOS. I'm grateful the show's colorful, I just wish it had a classier look, something I feel Beyond managed quite nicely for the most part.

Dialogue: It's a trailer and has been edited heavily, so it's unfair to judge, but ...Michelle Yeoh's delivery felt off, as did MSG's at points. I also feel as though the trailer failed to provide a satisfying arc/story. The beginning especially just... doesn't make sense out of context and felt like sloppy exposition:

Why are we here on this strange planet?
- I know you know how long we've been working together, but I'll say it anyway for the benefit of the audience. Also, I brought you here to give you... your own ship. SURPRISE!

Effects: They aren't bad, and for the most part they look quite nice. Certain shots, like the landscape profile of Burnham and Georgiou against the backdrop of a ringed planet just looked a little 90's-era Syfy channel in terms of execution, like the compositing wasn't quite finished. It looks like it was shot day for night and a DeviantArt artists painted the background.

At the end of the day: I'm still extremely positive. Whatever folks say, this is the first TV Trek in ages. I want to be positive about it, and I think its success is vital to the long-term health of the franchise.

Also... I kinda think that many of the quibbles I have above could endear me to the show. As much as I love Westworld and Battlestar Galactica and The Expanse, I'm not going to come back and rewatch them over and over and over like I do Trek. There's just got to be a bit of lovable Trek-jank. If it's TOO hard and TOO gritty or polished and perfect, it just sort of bounces off you.

Enterprise was a reboot, this is a reboot of the Enterprise timeline, which was a reboot of the voyager timelines, which was a reboot of the TNG/DS9 Prime timeline.
So in a way, just as a double-negative becomes a positive, this is a reboot that's not actually a reboot since it's a reboot of a reboot.

^ None of those shows were reboots, because they kept to the existing Trek continuity. Reboots require a BREAK in continuity.

You're thinking of a "reimagining", which is just a change in appearance. A show can be a reimagining but not a reboot.
Tomato, Potatoes, all the same, right?

Honestly, though, my strongest impression was that I could be watching any generic Star Trek-ish science fiction TV show.

Mine was that I could be watching any generic Star Trek TV series of a generation ago - just cooler looking.

It's definitely an upfronts trailer, they're always slightly awkward, but I loved it.

It sort of makes me want to go dark and avoid spoilers and advance press as much as possible -- I feel like this trailer has already revealed things I'd rather be surprised by. As others have noted, it really does seem to suggest that Michelle Yeoh is a quick Sean-Bean-style shocker death.

Just realized if I came to Discovery avoiding spoilers, that'll be a new Trek experience for me (well, aside from the JJ films). When Trek was last on TV, I was a spoiler junkie the whole time, there was no amount of advance information that was enough for me.

This is my guess. I remember when Trek09 came out and we had endless arguments about the nature of the Kelvin timeline and people had their theories. For example some felt the Kelvin timeline era shed the prime timeline. Some felt that Enterprise and three reboot movies exist in their own preexisting timeline that was unrelated to the prime timeline.

These explanations for these timelines are so vague that any of us can just decide for ourselves how it all fits, or not, and we can then live and let live.

Personally I like to see ENT and the reboot movies and now DSC as part of the Kelvin timeline that was always separate from the prime.

rek.

Is it possible she is Vulcan? Or half-Vulcan, and has embraced her human heritage in kind of a reverse-Spock kind of way?

That was my initial feeling.
