Concerns about the new ST

I liken a philosophy rooted in IDIC to one rooted in The Force; mostly cultish behavior centered around an idol. Philosophy should emerge from a long-term evolutionary reality shared by a population - not a fictional TV show or movie trying to create broad meaning from a sparse fiction that is merely a story device facade.

I'm just giving an example, because a 26 episode show will NOT have a $5 million per episode budget, but a 13 episode series just might.

As for the budget estimate, we've discussed this topic before here..and the closest comparison for a modern space opera is "The Expanse" which has a per episode budget of $5.4 million. Or it could be $5 or 6 million. Either way, you need to calm the Hell down.

If it looks as good as The Expanse I'll be happy. Great looking show and you can tell it has a budget.

They did give the IDIC a background, as I recall. The triangle represents Mount Seleyah, and presumably the motto comes from the wisdom of Surak. I think it's believable as an artifact of Vulcan cultural history.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. Personal philosophy, belief or code of conduct should not be rooted in pop culture propaganda, no matter how poignant or iconic.

Could I believe it came from Vulcan history? Absolutely? Do I need it to be tossed around at people who demonstrate intolerance towards others? No. I have other reference points for that.

Using a Star Trek reference to make a point on a Star Trek forum? Intolerable!

My biggest concern is that clusterfuck of a ship they've just revealed.

Looks like something from the JJ-verse.

I have a some concerns so far:
  • Being on CBS all access - I find it hard to believe it will draw in the viewers to keep going on such a specialized service. I don't think enough people will subscribe to just watch this show and many people ill never know a new ST exists. I think piracy will go through the roof on this one.
  • Ugly ship
  • All of this talk of diversity. Don't get me wrong I don't have anything against homosexual or transgendered people but I know I will get flak for saying this anyway. But I want to watch Star Trek, not WIll and Grace in space. Any crew composition should be focused on good actors and story lines, not checking off boxes on an affirmative action checklist. I think this concern is due to the unusually large amount of postings on the forums rather than what will happen in show so this is a minor concern.
Overall, not enough information has been released to worry too much and I hope the show will be good.

It would definitedly not looks as good as The Expance. The Expance is VERY hard sci-fi, after all - almost Atomic Rocket style.

You're confusing setting with production quality. Hard or soft sci-fi can look great depending on the production.

I've seen tv and movies that cost a bazillion dollars and sucked. I've seen tv and movies that look like they were filmed in my backyard that were awesome.
