College Football 2011 Discussion

You can't hang your hat on a one loss record when all your wins save one or two are against complete cupcakes, either. Unless your SEC and have that perceived reputation via ESPN. SEC is top heavy in the extreme. I know that Kent State defense was tough, but I think O-State could have handled it. Bama is making its case on a loss. O-State makes its case on wins.

Kent St? o_0

BTW.... here is Stewart Mandel's case for Okie St facing LSU in the title game.

So Matt Barkley is coming back to USC for his senior year.

Sweet!

:techman:
I really did think he was taking his talents to the NFL -- nice little surprise. This sets up the Trojans for a serious run at ending the SEC's stranglehold on the BCS championship next season.

Fight On!

Bad enough that K-State got screwed out of the Sugar Bowl. Nice to know the team that got in instead is full of such fine upstanding citizens. I sure hope the Hokies aren't counting on their kicker to win it for them.

Virginia Tech kicker arrested

He and two buddies, also students, broke into the home of a Virginia Tech basketball player. Broke in with a gun. A dispute over drugs. Lovely. Hey, mom....dad....you remember how happy you were when I got that scholarship to college? No word yet on whether or not Dorenzo Hudson will be arrested or what exactly prompted the dispute.

...
Blacksburg Police were called just before 10 p.m. Wednesday night to respond to an altercation at the home of Dorenzo Hudson, a three-year starter on the Hokie basketball team. Journell, 20, was arrested along with another Virginia Tech student, 21-year-old Matthew Brady, and Matthew Dunton, 23. All three are accused of a Class 2 felony for allegedly entering a home with a weapon, with the intent to commit larceny, assault and battery, or another felony.
.....

I think O-State belongs in the BCS National Championship Game. This is from a LSU Hack! LSU should not have to play a team they have already beaten, a team the did not win anything and a team that is only there because they were lucky enough to have other teams lose.

Just my 2 cents.

U scared, bro?

If you've already beaten them, then no worries in round II, right?

Scared of what? A team that LSU has already beaten, at home? Again, what is the justification for alabama being in the BCS NC Game? That they lost? What sense does that make? How can a team that hasn't won it's division or conferance championship dare to have the chance to call itself National Champions?

It's not Alabama's choice. That's the system we have in place. It selected LSU and Alabama as the two best teams, hence the rematch. Should the Tide have graciously stepped aside and let someone else have a go? LSU didn't do it when they had two losses. No one would do it, Alabama least of all. Many elements of the fan base and no doubt within the University consider the national championship Alabama's by divine right. ;)

Still, it's hard to gainsay the points you raise. Had voters at the last minute chosen to jump OSU over Alabama, Tide fans may not have liked it but wouldn't have had a legitimate complaint precisely because they didn't win Nov. 5 and hence had no chance to compete for the SEC championship. Such a jump would not have been unreasonable. That the voters chose not to, when they did precisely that in 2006 by moving Florida over Michigan, is telling.

I'd say it didn't happen because (a) Alabama's performance over the course of the season, even with a loss in overtime against the undefeated unanimous #1, convinced the voters and computers they are the second best team in the country and (b) Oklahoma State was a four-touchdown favorite over a mediocre team and threw up all over themselves in a loss. Had Alabama or LSU coughed up a big lead late to Miss State (6-6) in Starkville, the loss would have been just as fatal to their championship chances as OSU's choke job was against ISU (6-6) in Ames. One can't lose like that to a team like that and expect to be seen as a potential national champion.

As for a team not being a conference champion, it's not a requirement to compete in the game. One might argue it should be. If so, the Big 12 and PAC 10 should've supported the SEC proposal to that effect. It's come back to bite them in the ass. Afraid they'd get screwed somehow... they did.

Trust me, as an Alabama fan, I wish they'd hit one of those field goals in regulation and something happened to drop LSU to #3, otherwise we'd be looking at the same game. Playing LSU is diamond on diamond, as we saw earlier. Beating them is going to be a tall order. Stanford, Oregon, OSU all are be far more appealing opponents... they're much easier prey.

As an Alabama fan, I don't even care about the field goals; I just wish that Marquis Maze interception by Eric Reid had been a touchdown for Alabama instead. I was jumping up and down when I saw the play, and my heart was crushed when I saw how the officials ruled. It looked like a touchdown to me.

Exactly why I asked if he was scared. Most LSU fans that I know (and I know a lot of them!) wanted to play Oklahoma State precisely because they know in their hearts they would win. They have no such honest convictions about beating Alabama a second time.

If the Red Tide win by a field goal in Overtime, who is the best team in the country?

Woooo go W. Michigan Broncos!!! We actually get the game on ESPN. I can't wait for it to start, I have a relative on the team.

"Crimson Tide".

The game isn't to determine the best team, only the champion. I'd say even though the Giants won Super Bowl XLII, the Patriots were clearly the best team that year, just not that day. This year, even if they lose to Alabama by any number, LSU could stake a claim at being the best team in the country. Many feel they are already the best team in LSU history and their performance would support that.

Cool!! I always pull for the MAC schools.

I never watch football, only his games. I'm yelling all sorts of things at the tv, mostly derogatory things about Purdue which is my husband's alma mater. He's not amused.

LOL! That's even better! Actually, I don't watch much of the MAC games, other than Miami's.
