Christmas 08: the Next Doctor. Review

I like to image the 8th doctor had more than the single adventure we got to witness.

Of course I tend to believe the 8th Doctor had lots of off screen adventures between TVM & The Time War...

My same argument goes for the 9th doctor.

Now on to the second point, of did the 9th Doctor travel alone before Rose, I tend to think not, and certainly not for any period of time, I think the Auton of attack of Earth was thrust up on the Doctor after the Time War in the same way Donna was at the end of Parting of The Ways or the Titanic in The Last of the Time Lords / Time Crash.
It couldn't have been quite that direct a series of events since we know the 9th doctor made (at least) a brief trip to the dock of the Titanic and to Texas before the events of 'Rose'.

I think its one thing to make the argument for the 8th Doctor meeting the Cybermen off screen, but its quite another to make it for the 9th Doctor.

I have not seen the episodes recently, but at no point did Rose mention the other Cybermen during Made of Steel / Rise of the Cyberman, so I dont think 9 ever meet the Cybermen with Rose, other than the one in Dalek of course.

as to the 9th Doctor appearance on the Titanic, you have a point, but they could be WWTW, like so much of the series.

Would the Cybermen need to meet the Eighth and Ninth incarnations in order to know of them? I think they could have just done their research on the Time Lord or perhaps even swapped/stolen some data files from the Daleks. It actually would have been funny if the information projected images of Doctor 11, 12, and 13. That would have fandom raging for at least a decade.

no, its been suggested already on this thread that they got the information from Torchwood, the Doctor is only guessing that the information came from the Daleks

Precisely, just as none of the pre-Hartnell Doctors were on-screen, as the Doctor didn't meet the Daleks and the Cybermen until his Hartnell incarnation. :)

Not every thread; just when it's relevant to the conversation.

Doctor Who is, like it or not, a show of contradictions. Rejecting some ideas because they don't "fit" makes the series smaller, not more coherent. Doctor Who revels in the blind alleys and the daft ideas.

I just like pointing out the blind alleys and the contradictions. "Free your mind," said Morpheus, and who am I to argue? (Except that I really hated that film; comes from reading too much PKD.)

Actually, if the infostamp's information on the Doctor came from the Daleks, that proves it was the ninth Doctor who fought in the Time War. The Daleks the Cybermen interacted with were the Cult of Skaro ones, who were in hiding from the Time War until "Army of Ghosts"-- if they had records of the ninth Doctor, it had to be from before they went into hiding.

And it's a quaint piece of fanon. :)

Something didn't straight with me, and then I recalled that I already "heard" Paul McGahn go through almost exactly the same situation after half his brain got dumped into some other guy who was able to convince the Doctor that he was merely a pretender.

Bugger me if I can recall which story it was though.

Actually, if the infostamp's information on the Doctor came from the Daleks,
other than the fact the Doctor thinks it came from the Daleks, there is nothing to suggest it did come from the Daleks, just because the Doctor thinks something does not make it canon.

TBH the Doctor was so busy trying to fill in all the plot holes in the episode, its no surprise he is found wanting, and cant come up with a good enough theory. In the end he was just left saying "Daleks, they stole it from the Daleks" at any plot hole, hoping that it would work.

and then after he had finished doing that, the Gaint Cyberman appeared, I am amazed he didnt just throw his sonic screwdriver on the floor saying "sod it Russel ive had enough, you can find someone else to clear up this mess" He then walks away & trips over a brick & regenerates.

Minuet in Hell. The "Doctor" in that story was portrayed by Nicholas Briggs, best known as the voice of the Daleks and the Cybermen on the new series, but who also portrayed the Doctor in the Audio-Visuals fan audios in the 1980s.

well there was, that other piece of Dalek technology which had Dalek bumps on it and everything. Although, where the hell are the native Cybermen? Do both groups use Cyberkings or has a lot of adventures been done unrecorded for our benefit?

People among others, would have had to figure ou how to fight Cyber Kings... I'm wondering whoelse has huge mechs in their arsnal for their planets defense against cyberconversion.

Finally saw it (albeit on crappy youtube), and I thought it was really damn good! Definitely better than the last one.

I kinda wish they waited til the end of the episode to reveal the truth about Morrissey's character though. It was just too much fun seeing these two nutty, high-energy Doctors running around together, and they really could have done more with that.

But then again, the Doctor is too smart a guy not to figure out the truth early on. So I can appreciate that.

This story was set around a hundred and 50 years before Silver Nemesis... Actually, if someone feels like being a right swot, see if Nemesis's orbit overlapped with these occurrences?

Queen Victoria had been sitting on the throne since 1840. A giant mech stomping on the poor doesn't clip her attention more than a werewolf trying to eat her? Surely this would pre-enact the creation of some Torchwoodlike organization to... Maybe that's what she meant when she was talking about Albert's interest in the wierd and strange?

I haven't seen Jim melt down in a while, so here goes...

Wibbley-Wobbly, Timey-Whimey?

"What's that? There was a giant mechanical man roaming around London whilst I was off at Balmoral for Christmas? Really? Well, where is this mechanical man?

....

Really, Miser Lake. Show some decorum. Clearly the explosions were caused by unsafe working conditions."

And I'm sure we'd all understand it, were her Majesty not amused by that.

If it bothers Her Majesty that much, I'm sure she could just lay back and think of England.
