Christmas 08: the Next Doctor. Review

It was a brilliant cliffhanger yes, but as with many brilliant cliffhangers the resolution left a lot to be desired...Seems odd that one can use regenerative energy-without regenerating- to survive a Dalek blaster, but not, say, a fall, or poison...or even slipping over and banging your head on the TARDIS console

I mean, to be fair, it's not like the Doctor ever had a severed limb sitting around before that he could dump his regenerative energy into.

And since he won't ever have the Severed Hand of Destiny (TM) around anymore, I'd say no harm, no foul! ;)

That's exactly what I was thinking about it.

Considering that Time Lord's can chop off their hands (and one would assume feet, maybe even arms and legs) within the first couple days of regeneration and grow them back instantly, and with no visable side effects, harm, etc, then it would seem to me that the Doctor should now make a habit of butchering himself with a meat cleaver and getting extra hands, feet, etc to keep around.

Kinda like extra lives in a super mario bros. game...

Well, that assumes that circumstances allow the Doctor to chop off his limbs within the necessary timeframe of his regeneration. If he's busy dealing with a crisis.... ;)

True, plus he's not normally thinking straight just after regeneration!! I guess as well that even if you know you can grow it back, hacking a limb off takes some guts!

Btw good point about the hand Sci :bolian:

Thankee. The other thing that occurs to me is that he may not even WANT to do something like that again lest his hand grow into another Doctor/Whoever whasawhatsits. Could you imagine having five Doctors running around? Oy!

Yes I can. :techman:

The only thing I hate about that episode is the fact that Tom Baker's doctor was stuck in some kind of time bubble thing and didn't get to run around with the others.

Well that was his own fault and he later regetted it. Of course he was a part of the next anniversary in 1993 where there were six Doctors running around.

now if any of the Doctors have done anything they should regret, its Dimensions in Time, hell their are some Eastenders stars who should also regret doing it.

All I can say is thank god the new series is gone to some length to pretend that it didn't happen, and confirm that EE is fiction in the Whoverse (hell even SJA has been part of that effort)

Thinking about EE has done its part as well, sending two of its characters to a Doctor Who convention, and showed them watching Doctor Who.

Knowing RTD, 10 will die saving the entire multiverse from the jaws of oblivion. And someone will have a 25 minute speech about how wonderful and brilliant the Doctor is. And Take That will have a cameo.

Given Russell T Davies' proclivity for season finales and "momentous" episodes, I have to believe that this will be the case.

Somehow I don't think so, from what I had read Tennant's end will be similar to how Davison left, so I think he'll be dying thoughout the story. This won't be a multi part season finale just next year's Christmas special.

"Might regenerate, i don't know, feels different this time........... " Classic!!

Apologies for ressurrecting an old thread, but I've finally seen the christmas special. Overall, I think it's a lot better than the others but there were a few over the top moments. I've been slowly getting back into the Doctor Who fold ever since I found out that Torchwood was going to be re-airing on BBC America and it's so much fun seeing David Tennant again. He was awesome, as usual in this episode, especially at the beginning.

After reading some of the comments, I didn't like the Cyber-sheep (Or whatever they're called) either. They came across almost as not very necessary and they were almost as bad as the Pigs from that Dalek two parter. As for the Cyber machine that reminded me of an old Power Rangers episode, it wasn't bad, but it also didn't strike me as threatening.

What I loved about this episode though where those quiet moments between the Doctor and the other Doctor. It's nice to get emotional drama during a Christmas special (Something the others don't do that well even though Voyage of the Damned came close) and this one did it the best. Morrissey was great as supporting and just overall, it was so much fun to see a new episode of Doctor Who.

As for what's to come, the only other news I've heard was the revealing of the new doctor. I heard something too about Michelle Ryan appearing in Doctor Who and that got me excited. I haven't seen the episode yet, but I kind of liked her in Bionic Woman and it is going to be nice to see her again.

I'm going to miss Tennant when the time comes. I started with Eccleston, but I can almost say Tennant was my Doctor. Watching him grow into the role over the years has been a hell of a lot of fun. I think it was part way through season three when I started to really love him, but it was really Time Crash when I realized how awesome he truely was. Watching his Doctor regenerate is going to be tough. :(

Yes, it is, I agree. Are there any other shows where you know in advance that a character's demise is imminent? I suppose that you can read spoilers of things and come across the info that way, but Who fans know, in advance, for a fact, that their character is going to die. Bummer. :(
