Chakotay and Seven Romance

Ok. But isn't it a trope in and of itself to put her in a relationship? Why not have her do something else to show us that she can act independently of other's expectations? I don't know...take up salsa dancing or something? Yes I'm being ridiculous but I hope that gets my point across.

Yes, it is a trope and as I said a little ways back, an easy and convenient one to signify that Seven has completed her four year course in humanity and as proof, now has someone to share the experience of her hard earned gains, as well as perhaps being an intimate ally in whatever depredations she might face in dealing with Starfleet. She was shown putting into practice the lessons she had learned, in her own way, but within the straightjacket of what the producers clearly thought would be a palatable and expected symbol that she is now one of us.

Seven of Nine was obviously flunking out in Human Error.

I am amazed that she turned her grades around so well, and quickly.

Well, obviously someone believed in the practice of using a very generous grading curve.:)

There's only one person in the class.

Any (established and recognized) curved grading would force her final mark to be %50, no matter how well or bad she actually did.

Its all relative, but I don't feel like a passing grade should be below %70.

Pretty much everyone who has ever watched Voyager feels the same way. They had no chemistry. There's a rumor that Robert Beltran complained so much about his lack of character development that in order to shut him up, they gave Chakotay a romance with Seven.

But I've also heard that neither actors had any idea of an impending romance and both were stunned.

Either way, I like to pretend that it didn't happen. Or that Chakotay was having a mid-life crisis.

My recollection is that both actors were in fact frustrated because they *did* call it early, having seen a subtext in the script for the episode ''Natural Law'' (where Seven and Chuckles are stranded together for a while after a shuttle crash), and each had asked the producers if they should play it like a budding romance, only to be specifically told not to... and then, upon discovering in the series final that they were going to be paired up, Beltran and Ryan were both pissed off that they might've had the chance to seed the romance a little earlier than they did, if only the producers had've actually let them play it that way more back in ''Natural Law''.

As it is, the 'romance' just suddenly appears out of nowhere, and the audience were left scratching our heads.

I've just gotten to the end of another re-run of voyager, and this is one of the most irritating things about it . To make their suddenly romance palatable, I have to pretend that their relationship took a turning point during Natural Law. I have no idea why they glossed over an episode which could of had so much potential.

Continuity makes stupid people angry.

If they're challenged in the slightest, by anything not making sense since the last time 8 months ago, they watched an episode of "whatever" they will tune out and switch over to more lubricated media.

Has it come down to this, or are you being silly?

No I'm not being silly, but this is about 20 years ago, not now. Haven't you read Ronald D. Moores' massive dissertation on why Voyager is shit?

The Networks hated DS9 at the time because they felt they were losing money by playing episodes in their intended order, and because back then, if you missed a week, you were screwed there was no way to make up for that week just because your fat cousin had to get married, so missing a week was a reason to give up, or just wait to pick up the story again in 4 months after the reruns had cycled over to almost the same point.

Instead of saying "stupid people" maybe I should have said "casual viewer" but the end result is the same.

It is frustrating. One of the books (I think it was the Nanotech War but am not sure) created a scenario that set the stage for it. Seven was attempting to come to terms with not having had a normal human childhood and Chakotay was helping her by running some holodeck simulations with her. One thing led to another...blah blah.
