CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Exactly. He's an inactive member of the North Carolina State Bar under the name "Alec Peters Jr." He joined in 1988. The University of North Carolina -- Chapel Hill commencement program from 1987 shows an "Alec Peters Jr." graduating with a Juris Doctor. (See: page 13)

He did the work. He earned his degree. He earned his membership with the Bar. Put this one to bed and stop giving him real concerns about people's inappropriate interest in every little aspect of his private life.
 
Just imagine if someone running for political office had these many allegations about their background.

Wasn't trying to continue the debate. Was just pointing out that people weren't so much after personal information as wanting to know if he was telling the truth. At least, that's my read of (most of) the players involved in that particular discussion.

Something interesting really needs to happen soon to refocus the discussion. When's the next filing or hearing due again? :)
 
Got a question about the way US courts work...

Axanar and Peters are being sued in a Californian court, but what happens if they move the sets and stuff to another state? Would CBS/Paramount have to take out a new case in, for example, Nevada or South Dakota?

Considering they ran Strange New Worlds for how long, still do the occasional art competition, never batted an eye prior to people trying to turn their fan films into a business, and (used) to give a chance to unsolicited scripts etc etc... It really looks like CBS/Paramount and their predecessors have treated fan works with way more respect than their peers.

It's just there is always that one fan who, when graciously given a little, will always try to turn around and steal alot. Human nature, I guess.

CBS/Paramount has treated the fan community VERY well. They are in their legal right to stop fan films and fan fiction, they haven't. So, let's stop with this idea that CBS/Paramount are treating fan created materials poorly... They don't want people making money off of their IP.

Want to know who doesn't like fanfic? Anne Rice.
 
Many years ago, J.K. Rowling had her lawyers send a cease and desist letter to someone posting Harry Potter fan-fic with the characters doing very adult things. The guy countered by trying to claim that since Rowling was being selective about who she sent these letters to and didn't shut down ALL fan-fic sites, she had "released her copyright to the public domain". He was squished like a bug.

So, for those who fear that CBS must "go after all fan-fic films/stories" because they're suing Axanar, there's nothing to worry about. Just as they have every legal right to shut fan-fic down, they are just as well in their rights to simply ignore it all. And they have the right to selectively shut down a few, and they really don't need to justify a reason why they go after this one but not that one.

thank you. this is a polite and concise response to someone who looks like they must have just parachuted into the thread. this is how they should be acknowledged, and I am glad you did it.

Fanfiction does not make any money.

No, of course they didn't have to. They donated based on false promises, to something that ultimately couldn't and can't be delivered. The legalities of this are pretty cut and dried and as already stated in pages past, Alec has never been good with money.

Somethimg that wasn't delivered because of CBS. If they hadn't sued, the fans would have gotten their money's worth in a good fan series and it wouldn't have been false promises. But CBS made it a false promise. It wouldn't have been, if not for CBS.
