B+.

A solid movie. As far as movies about superheroes fighting each other... if BvS was a little too unconventional, perhaps Civil War was a little too conventional.

Looper did a video of how the Avengers should look. Watching this video, I can't help but think of all the ridiculous outfits Hawkeye has worn since the 60s.

I wish this movie had featured a scene with Steve and Bucky discussing what it was like for them to be men out of time. I wish this movie had explored the possibility of Steve being torn between his friendships with Bucky and Sam. I wish this movie had spent more time developing Steve's relationship with Sharon. I wish this movie DID NOT feature a five to ten minute scene about Tony recruiting Peter Parker . . . in a Captain America movie.

I wish this movie had been more about Steve and a lot less about Tony and the Avengers being torn apart.

There's a million skyline shots of NYC and no Stark/Avengers tower in the background.
Daredevil and Jessica Jones should be able to see the Avengers tower as they're prowling rooftops in Hell's Kitchen.
And I'm pretty sure the lack of avengers tower has more to do with the cost of inserting it into every shot, especially when 90% of the audience will never notice it's absence.
What bugged me was that they had a shot of the MetLife building.

This should provide some interesting discussions.

So if a generic villain would have recruited a generic henchman, would that have been ok?
Or would you have prefered a story purely told from Cap's perspective alone?

Other things that distracted me: Apparently, one of the qualifications for being on Team Cap is to literally wear the official Team Caps: plain, single-color baseball caps. It's like they bought in bulk from the "We're Totally Not Trying To Be Incognito" swap meet.

The title's first half for this movie is CAPTAIN AMERICA, not THE AVENGERS or IRON MAN.

I would have liked a genuine follow up to "The Winter Soldier", instead of a continuation of "Age of Ultron", which would have suited an Avengers movie, instead of a Captain America movie. But since that's not going to happen, all I can do is harbor a low regard for this movie.

And why did the topic of a generic villain get into this conversation?

This was proper follow-up, they just remembered that Cap doesn't exist in a vacuum and other people still exist.

That's how Shared Universes work.

Outside of the first movies like Dr. Strange and Black Panther (maybe), I think the days of truly "solo" movies are probably over. At this point the characters are to connected for it to be realistic for them not make appearances in each other's movies. I think the only "solo" movie to come out since Avengers that didn't feature some kind of appearance by at least one other major character is Thor: The Dark World.

In this movie's context, being a Captain America movie, Tony is essentially the villain.

I liked this movie precisely because it wasn't a generic Captain America movie and it wasn't quite an Avengers movie.

Regarding crossovers in general, isn't that a hallmark of the Marvel brand? The concept that the heroes existed in real world series meant that they crossed over a lot more frequently than DC in the sixties and seventies for example.

Yes, it's just that people are still so used to Superhero movies being totally self-contained that they still have a hard time wrapping their heads around the idea.

I watched this again the other night. It really holds up well, I particularly enjoyed the Spiderman scenes, the subtle machinations of Zemo, and the depth of friendship between Bucky and Steve (and to a lesser extent Sam).

And that's only if you don't count Chris Evans' cameo.
