Monster maroon uniforms were in use by 2278. Pretty much putting that as the last possible year TMP could have taken place.

Ah, fair. I mean, if one really wanted to one could tie oneself in knots justifying the uniform difference, but I don't see any reason to. That's still eight years.

(Personally, in My Star Trek Universe 1,000 Stardates is a year, and by that metric there's only a year and a half between "Turnabout" and TMP. Which has its own problems both logically and with dialogue, so I don't advocate for it. But I personally don't need there to have been most of a decade there. I'm just observing that there could be.)

McCoy had misgivings about the transporters back in TOS. As for Kirk being an Ass to Junior officers??? Huh? He may have been irritated not knowing his way around but an acting like a jerk....??

Ok. Again 2-3 years is plenty of time for Kirk to get Stale, McCoy to grow a beard and Spock to shed most of his remaining emotion. And I still stand by that TMP is as close to TOS we ever got and most likely ever will.

More canonically happened in 3 months between Picard Seasons 2 and 3 than happened in the 2.5 years between TAS and TMP.

Estranged has nothing to do with anger; just no longer being close.

He demotes Decker for no good reason. He assumes control in situations inappropriate to do so.

It's rough. And it's unnecessary.

For what it's worth, the non-canon IDW licensed comics already had Scotty claim that a refit was done between Pike and Kirk. Of course no explanation was given on why said refit made everything more primitive, but that's probably the closest explanation we'll ever get on the in-universe change of the ship between SNW and TOS. Either the Fed was going through a resource shortage that required them to use materials that resembled cardboard or they had horrifically bad designers (I mean, even in the real world it's not always about budget--the most expensive TOS film, TMP, had horrific uniforms)

As has been noted, the crew size doubles, and the Federation is constantly on the brink of war with the Klingons. Resources being adjusted, and regulated would be reasonable compared to the 200 some odd crew on Pike's ship.

Well it was not a permanent demotion. You can't have two captains. Remember in Naked Time when Kirk was by himself and high. he said about the Enterprise...."NEVER LOSE YOU. NEVER". I'm thinking his desire to get the Enterprise back trumped pissing off his dead friends Son...

If I'm thinking about refits and timelines rather than engaging with the characters and the story then the show has failed in its entertainment value.

There's stuff you think about because the story's boring you, and there's stuff you think about before the story has even had a chance to pull you in. Personally I can't always tell if I'm being unfair on SNW stories because of all the production choices, or I'm unforgiving of production choices because the stories haven't won me over. It's probably a little of both.
