But you do recall Chapel being interesting in Spock? I think it's a liberty to be sure. But it isn't completely out of nowhere. Unless they do some massive (and preferably effective) gymnastics I don't think they're going to line up SNW and, say, The Naked Time. How in the fuck did this happen? I don't recall Spock ever being interested in Chapel.
Jim never mentioned for a whole season that he served on the Farragut. He didn't mention that he was from Iowa until the fourth movie.James never mentioned George served on the 1701,
I don't recall her shock and I don't recall an opportunity for Kirk to go "As everyone knows my brother, George Samuel Kirk, served on the Enterprise at least until I kicked his butt in chess and he had to a new colony to hide his shame."James never mentioned George served on the 1701, Chapel was basically in shock at Spock's emotions in Amok Time, doubly shocked when Spock said he was married.
We’ll, when a boy and a girl like each other very much…How in the fuck did this happen? I don't recall Spock ever being interested in Chapel.
Nope, same timeline.S02E03 basically let it outta the bag that it's a different timeline anyways, some things might come to fruition (Pike's accident) but other things are gonna get heavily retconned or erased.
Continuinity wise:
James never mentioned George served on the 1701, Chapel was basically in shock at Spock's emotions in Amok Time, doubly shocked when Spock said he was married.
Certain crew members had no clue who Khan Noonien Singh was in TOS, but everyone here knows La'An's connection to him.
The biggest canon break is the Gorn thing but that's a whole thread subject.
I am honestly enjoying SNW for what it is but part of me wishes this and Discovery were set in the LD timeline or somewhere nearby (2390s) and flesh out the Romulus destruction better than what we got in PIC S1.
Given an existential threat to the Federation when the Feds realize Romulans even if evil were holding back even worse creatures or aliens from the far end of the Beta Quadrant, and now they are in over their heads.
Flinging Discovery to the 31st century was a big mistake, now whatever timeline we see will never matter because we already know the outcome.
So? The characters don't mention a lot of things.James never mentioned George served on the 1701,
James never mentioned George served on the 1701
MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?
KIRK: We met when he was promoted to Fleet Captain.
MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active.
KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years.
SPOCK: Eleven years, four months, five days.
TOS Chapel, I still totally think that. Because outside of WALGMO, she's just a doormat. I can't see TOS Spock being interested in her at all.It does cast the characters in a very different light. You can't watch it anymore and think "She has NO shot with this guy."
Kirk does say that he was born on Earth in "The Gamesters of Triskelion," though.Jim never mentioned for a whole season that he served on the Farragut. He didn't mention that he was from Iowa until the fourth movie.
I struggle with the fact that I'm not mad that SNW wants me to ship Chapel / Spock after 50 years, but that it's WORKING.TOS Chapel, I still totally think that. Because outside of WALGMO, she's just a doormat. I can't see TOS Spock being interested in her at all.
But I view SNW as an alternate continuity to TOS (There are just too many differences for it to be anything but IMO), so all bets are off. Jess Bush's Chapel I can see Spock falling for.
SEE how tight lipped these people are? George Kirk was Kirk's mom's FOURTH HUSBAND and Jim has DOZENS of step siblings! We don't know!Kirk does say that he was born on Earth in "The Gamesters of Triskelion," though.![]()
Pike and Kirk will be like Sarek and Spock, or Grievous and Anakin. Always just missing each other. Its like when we as fans presume that Pike and Kirk met when Pike was promoted to Fleet Captain off the Enterprise and Kirk took command of the ship.
Well, the exchange from "The Menagerie" is:
Lots of room for interpretation there.
That's kind of the whole point of a prequel though, in my opinion. Treating SNW as a alternate or altered timeline is fine if continuity is that important in terms of enjoyment of the story. For my part, SNW is doing the strongest thing a prequel can do; make me go "Oh, I never realized" and seeing interactions from a whole new light.Lots of room for interpretation there.

For me, that's what Better Call Saul did, and it's a far better prequel than SNW is. With SNW, I most often say, "Well, that's a neat idea. It doesn't really jibe with what TOS showed us, but it's a neat idea." Chapel's new characterization, one of Khan's descendants serving aboard the ship, Spock embracing his human half more than we ever saw on TOS, Chapel & Uhura knowing T'Pring before "Amok Time," Spock & Chapel having a flirtation/relationship, Uhura serving on the Enterprise as both a cadet and an ensign, Sam Kirk being in Starfleet and serving aboard the Enterprise, M'Benga serving as the Enterprise's CMO years before "A Private Little War," the Gorn being completely different, the more advanced tech... There are just too many differences, both big and small, for me to regard SNW as anything more than a "broad strokes" prequel to TOS. So yeah, I regard it as an alternate universe to maintain my sanity. That's kind of the whole point of a prequel though, in my opinion. But TOS Chapel was like that before she lost her fiancé. "The Naked Time" takes place before WALGMO in production order, stardate order, and airdate order. So TOS Chapel was either always wimpy or whatever changed her happened before WALGMO.Many post about how they cannot see this Chapel becoming like TOS Chapel. For that I can only say please don't work with traumatized or depressed people. The change that grief and loss can have on a person is profound, and I would say the loss of a fiancée counts.
Because the show still pre-dates TOS Spock. He was very emotional in 'The Cage'.Spock embracing his human half more than we ever saw on TOS,
There's nothing in TOS that contradicts these.Sam Kirk being in Starfleet and serving aboard the Enterprise, M'Benga serving as the Enterprise's CMO years before "A Private Little War,"
So what? I stated what I think a prequel should do, not who did it better? For me, that's what Better Call Saul did, and it's a far better prequel than SNW is
Losing her fiancé? Yeah, can't imagine her fears and the impact upon her mood. People sure are sensitive about their lost loved ones...But TOS Chapel was like that before she lost her fiancé. "The Naked Time" takes place before WALGMO in production order, stardate order, and airdate order. So TOS Chapel was either always wimpy or whatever changed her happened before WALGMO.
Why doesn't Chapel know? Seriously, people are pouring over that episode like it's the map to the Ark of the Covenant but I cannot find any indication of such that Chapel didn't know. Uhura asks who she is and that's it.Chapel & Uhura knowing T'Pring before "Amok Time,
I struggle to see how these are contradicted from what we saw in TOS.Spock & Chapel having a flirtation/relationship, Uhura serving on the Enterprise as both a cadet and an ensign, Sam Kirk being in Starfleet and serving aboard the Enterprise, M'Benga serving as the Enterprise's CMO years before "A Private Little War,"
To me this is like watching only John Wayne films and meeting a cowboy who is nothing like John Wayne.he Gorn being completely different
Well if you're worried about sanity use mine. I know I'm not using it.*So yeah, I regard it as an alternate universe to maintain my sanity.
Everyone had heard of Khan, they just didn't realize the guy they brought out of stasis was him.Certain crew members had no clue who Khan Noonien Singh was in TOS,
Exactly. They knew of him, and possible history, but didn't know him by just looking at him. Just like Kodos the Executioner. Kirk suspected but needed proof.Everyone had heard of Khan, they just didn't realize the guy they brought out of stasis was him.
Yep.Everyone had heard of Khan, they just didn't realize the guy they brought out of stasis was him.
KIRK: Name, Khan, as we know him today. (Spock changes the picture) Name, Khan Noonien Singh.
SPOCK: From 1992 through 1996, absolute ruler of more than a quarter of your world. From Asia through the Middle East.
MCCOY: The last of the tyrants to be overthrown.
SCOTT: I must confess, gentlemen. I've always held a sneaking admiration for this one.
KIRK: He was the best of the tyrants and the most dangerous. They were supermen, in a sense. Stronger, braver, certainly more ambitious, more daring.
SPOCK: Gentlemen, this romanticism about a ruthless dictator is
KIRK: Mister Spock, we humans have a streak of barbarism in us. Appalling, but there, nevertheless.
SCOTT: There were no massacres under his rule.
SPOCK: And as little freedom.
MCCOY: No wars until he was attacked.
SPOCK: Gentlemen.
KIRK: Mister Spock, you misunderstand us. We can be against him and admire him all at the same time.
SPOCK: Illogical.
KIRK: Totally. This is the Captain. Put a twenty four hour security on Mister Khan's quarters, effective immediately.
