I bet when the 50th anniversary rolls around in a few years Disney releases fancy box sets with the originals. They’re less about Lucas’ vision and more about making money.

Just like everyone who was betting that the original version of ANH was going to be re-released in theatres May 2017 for the 40the anniversary? And then that didn't happen.

I'll take that bet. Optimistically I'd give it 50/50.

I don't even give it that high odds. Except for my own VHS copy of Star Wars (which I plan to be put to rest with), I don't expect those versions to be viewable ever again.

And, for me anyway, I have to step back and remind myself that we all got here because of a passion and interest in Star Trek. So if we try to remember that human element and not assume the worst of our fellow fans then maybe it would go better. Also, hopefully less black and white thinking.

Color me optimistic.

ETA: Just read a quote attributed to Morgan Freman that I feel is timely: "Just because I disagree with you does not mean I hate you. We need to relearn that in our society." I agree as well as relearn the art of conversation and cooperation.

This is nothing compared to Star Wars. I myself am still enduring the ongoing Star Wars social media brainwashing that tells me that 2003 Clone Wars, Droids and Ewok cartoons, and Ewok movies were never canon and trying to reconcile that with what I actually remember from 2003 and the 1980s/1990s.

Heh, as an OG Star Wars fan in 1977, I still haven't fully come to peace with Vader being Luke's father or Leia his sister - both are so clumsy.

Fortunately, I have the DVD they released 20 years ago so I don't have to rely on an even more ancient VHS copy.

I'm assuming that the Crossover writers have been mining TrekBBS or, angels and ministers or grace defend us, TrekMovie to give Mariner lots of dialog like "Hey, how come this ship is so much BIGGER than it is in the history books?" or all the other continuity complaints, only you know, funny. (If I could write for Lower Decks I'd be writing for Lower Decks. Let's see THEM write software, huh?)

Kind of like how some of the Buffy writers hung around the really really REALLY nerdy writers to harvest dialog for the three nerd villains in season six.

Because they are actors playing Kirk, and not just Shatner as Kirk. Recasting should be encouraged rather than constantly "dubbing over" other actors.

For the same reason that they're not using deep fake technology to make Anson Mount look like Jeffrey Hunter, or Ethan Peck look like Leonard Nimoy.

They're assuming the viewers are smart enough to realize that about 55 years has passed since those original actors were on the screen with their version of Pike Kirk and Spock; and that yes while the characters are the same, the actors being paid to portray them are not.

(@Tallguy consults his notes... Ah, here we are...) They are either truly classic characters like Sherlock Holmes or the Three Musketeers or they are simply an actor. If they are classic characters then they can and should be played by multiple actors over the years. See also Jones, Henry, Jr., PhD.

I could see the argument for using deep fakes or AI tech to insert the faces of TOS cast members if it’s just gonna be a single scene or small handful of scenes. The whole idea of “prime Kirk IS Shatner” etc…

I don’t necessarily agree with it. But I get the argument. It’s like using de-aged/AI Hamill as Luke in “The Mandolorian” and “Book of Boba Fett” or the Leia/Tarkin stuff in “Rogue One”

Now, if it’s a much larger role…say inserting Nimoy for Spock or Hunter for Pike. Then no, that would be too much.
