Burn Notice: Season 4 - Discussion & Spoilers

Michael and Fiona go undercover as security consultants in order to catch an antiques thief. Meanwhile, Sam and Jesse investigate a killing.

Hmm. I've noticed that I really don't care that much for the arc(s) of this show since about season two. I'm more interested in a good client story and this one didn't really grab me.

It's quite unusual for me to not care much at all about the larger story arc of a TV show, since that's what usually keeps my interest in a show, but Burn Notice is an exception.

On second thought, I think my main problem is that the main story arcs don't really advance the characters themselves, it just changes the circumstances/details without changing the basic motivation of the characters and basically resets the situation with each new long-term opponent.

The job wasn't all that great, since in reality the way they just barged right in there pretending to be private security would be an obvious way for them to attempt to steal the sword, as the actual thief (without blown cover yet) pointed out.

Didn't see the thief's identity coming---I thought it was the head of security guy. But, overall, didn't really care much about the client story OR the overall arc (that woman really annoyed me).

The whole episode was OK, but nothing really special.

Weirdly, I agree with the thought that the arcs just aren't that interesting on this show. The show just isn't serious enough to sustain them. Instead, they tend to clash with the fun we're supposed to get watching Michael and co. pull off a job each week.

Haven't caught the latest episode yet, but it's on demand for a while, so I'll get to it soon.

I think these Burn Notice threads will be coming to an end when they go to break. But until then:

Former CIA operative Paul Anderson gets into trouble with some Russian spies and asks for Michael's help.

Yeah.............not really looking forward to seeing an episode with 74 year old Burt Reynolds (who looks more like 94, frankly), who's still trying to act cool.

That's Burt Reynolds? Man, time has been tough on the guy--he looks like a skeleton. Far cry from his appearance in Deliverance, or even on the last season of The X-Files.

He had some bad plastic surgery. Sometimes it's the doctor, sometimes it's that a person's body just doesn't respond well.

I'd love to see a Sam Axe centered series, but not if it doesn't involve Bruce Campbell (which a prequel would seem to require). He's half the appeal of the character!

Apparently, he just had a quadruple bypass a few months ago. That explains a lot about his appearance. Still, he was never a favorite of mine, so this episode was a bit hard for me to watch.

This was horrifyingly bad. Michael Westen the Russian killer. Ick. Burt Reynolds lusting to kill Russians. Double ick. Shooting a Russian for a gag at the end is just epic bad taste, not funny. The Cold War is long over, it's way past time to drop the hate, even in so conservative a medium as television.

"It's Michael Westen and there's only four of us" translates to "American spies are five times as murderous as Russian assassins." The trouble is, that's not a feelgood thought. It's also way too heavy handed for a series that needs a light touch on such premises.

There's been way too much of the dreary, nasty spy crap this season and this turd is sorely trying my patience with the entire series.

This used to be a must-watch show. Now....not.

I do like Warehouse 13 and Eureka. I'm even giving Haven enough episodes to see if it develops or not. And Hubby's getting me hooked on Royal Pains (skipping Burn Notice).

I haven't seen the latest episode with Burt Reynolds... And I'm not sure that Season 4 thus far will be my favorite season ever... But the show hasn't gone completely down the creative crapper like everyone seems to be implying.

Maybe I just like the characters too much by this point or maybe I'm just more accepting when it comes to tonal shifts but... I'm still enjoying this series.

And from what I've seen reported out of Comic Con this weekend... The Sam Axe Prequel film will be "How Sam Got To Miami" and Campbell is headlining it.

I haven't caught the Reynolds episode yet, but I finally caught the one from the previous week. The interrogation plot was partly unsavory (stj is right--Michael wants to go back to this?) and partly plain silly (they yell and can be easily heard in the next room, but the talk rather loudly and can't?).

Once again, the non-serialized story was better. And did Michael's mother not appear yet again? She's been off and on this year, or has it always been like that?

Michael, Jesse and Sam have to come up with a plan to save Fiona when a job protecting a businessman at a house party takes a bad turn and puts Fiona's life at risk.

Did everyone give up on this show? This was one of the better episodes in a while, with everyone being required to do their own thing without help.

^I have it saved to the DVR; I'm out of town right now, but will watch it when I get home.

I'm not ready to give up on Burn Notice yet, because when it's good, it's still very good. This season, however, just hasn't been as good as previous seasons, but there's still hope for it yet.

it seems the creative team behind the show have lost sight of is that most of the audience want to see michael play paladin and not a spy.
