Brian Brophy didn’t return?

The same actor didn't even play Jedi Knight Kit Fisto in two movies separated by just three years both in production and in-universe chronology. I know and I don't really care.

The AOTC actor was covered from head to neck and then his hands with green prosthetics. His mouth - the one part most fondly remembered by fans for that smile - was all of the actor that was still visible.

I recall that Jim Carrey got specialized training from a former CIA officer who helped train CIA officers to resist breaking under torture.

Lol, this thread sure blew up, didn’t it?

I wrote it whole day drinking so I might’ve gotten overly passionate earlier.

It was disappointing that Brophy didn’t return, but I only felt that way—-as I mentioned earlier—-because there had been a build up to his appearance.

I was more disappointed with the costume party stuff (which belongs back in the 90s) and the fact that the crew seems to be bordering on archetypes/cliches.

The Seven of Nine and more dramatic moments, such as Raffi seeing her son, worked.

But that Frenchman and Pimp stuff at the bar? I thought this show was going to be much more sophisticated than that.

My expectations for season 1 have dwindled a bit.

I would agree that it would have been nice to bring back the original actors, the producers and Frakes (given that he directed the episode) probably thought it was more trouble than it was worth. Consider that both Ryan and Frakes admit that they had trouble reprising their roles and required extra coaching to get through their parts even though they had played those parts for years. At least there would be some major payoff to be had by bringing them back. Brophy? Did his character have any chemistry with anyone? What's the dramatic payoff?
What’s the dramatic payoff to Mr. Mott’s Hair Emporium? It’s an Easter egg. It’d have been one thing if they approached the guy and he declined or he read and wasn’t right for the part, but it’s another to not invite the actor who played the part to read. Like you said, it would have been cool to see him again, if they could manage it.

People have tried but Kurtzman keeps diverting the email to his account and rewriting it into hate mail in which he sends to Brophy. Kurtzman really has it in for the guy.
Jason
See, this is what I’ve been saying all along. I think he’s never forgiven Brophy for foreclosing on his mother’s ranch when they were both on Dallas in the 80’s.

Yes, but it's cheap, and it doesn't rely on someone who hasn't been involved in the franchise in decades. Recasting Maddox was likely a cold, rational decision, the sort that happens all the time in entertainment.

If I am being honest, Maddox in this episode was almost completely different from the Maddox in Measure of a Man. The script did not really make a strong connection between the two episodes. The OG Maddox was clearly less lovable and more strident in his beliefs, even after accepting Data as a sentient being. Kirsten Beyer's script had many issues, IMO. However, the problems of the script freed the production from having Maddox played in the same manner.

It's almost like *gasp* 20 years had past!

Honestly maybe they should have just ditched Maddox entirely and have the character be Geordi obsessed with resurrecting Data. Although him dying killed by some new character wouldn't sit well with fans at all...

I think it’s kind of hilarious that I’m even arguing for the guy given how much I disliked him first run. But I dunno, there’s something about, at my age, seeing a face you haven’t in a long time. They managed to get my hopes up (weekly, over five episodes, from the pilot), and I was wondering what that character might be like today. I even googled what the actor (also had no idea his name) looked like today to see if he was “camera ready” or if they’d likely recast, and, yup, he seemed like anyone else in the biz. As different as the part was, it wasn’t anything actors didn’t play all the time, and he might have in his long career on screen and stage, and it might have been that much more interesting seeing the unlikeable Maddox now, so far away, more sympathetic.
