Best Captain(With Poll)

nice pun!And for other comments on here, you can't say concretely who is the best. It's subjective. That's why it's a poll, not a fact. Some people are more inclined to like males in leading roles, some people females. And that's not just a sexist thing. I have a female friend who doesn't like shows with women in charge. Some people prefer different storylines which may color their liking of a series and captain. And so on. It matters not to me which one you prefer. All I can speak about is my own perception.
As I have understood, it was amazing that DS9 had seven years, too.

I never liked either TNG or DS9 so your logic is flawed. Voyager captured viewers that had never watched Star trek before.

Before the fact, Armin Shimerman mentioned at a Baltimore area convention that they were all assuming that Season Six would be the final one for DS9. DS9's ratings were never strong enough, after the first year, to assure that it would have the long run that TNG did. The six-year thing, though, had to do with the fact that the actors were only signed to six-year contracts and since the ratings were not great it was not assumed that the studio would be willing to pay the regulars enough to sign on for an additional year. Clearly this did not turn out to be true in most cases.
There is nothing wrong with it, but it is highly unusual for anyone to go to such lengths. I could go to the DS9 board on this very bbs and start a thread asking for DS9 fans to come here and vote for The Sisko and I could probably get around five additional votes for him putting him in the lead, but why would I? It is very silly, I half expect a British general to walk into this thread and start waving a stick about.

I vote for Picard. He saved all of humanity from the Q. He fought the Borg, and although assimilated was able to get through enough information to Data to stop the Borg invasion. He stopped the Borg from preventing first contact with the Vulcans. He put an end to the Klingon Civil War (If he hadn't convinced Starfleet to go ahead with his blockade, Data wouldn't have been able to uncover the Romulan connection.). And he took up the challenge of choosing the next leader of the Klingon High Council. He did all of that, and more, with out the Prophets helping him by pulling him out of time or destroying an entire invasion fleet.
As were many other Captains, Starfleet, Klingon and Romulan.
That in no way makes you a better Captain.
They were already trapped, he prevented Dukat from releasing them. If the Prophets really did live outside of linear time they could have just removed the book (The Kosta Mojin???) from history.
That's debatable. Kirk was one of a few survivors of a colony that had half it's population killed. Picard nearly died before his first duty posting; he had a poor relationship with his father and his brother and he had to apply to Starfleet Academy twice to be accepted, and he developed the Picard Maneuver.

One of the main reasons Janeway is my favourite is that she's a science geek. Can't speak for Archer, as I don't know him from a bunch of hammers, but IIRC the rest weren't.
Being a science geek myself, it was nice to see one out of the lab/engine rooms! I could never really bring myself to believe that Kirk or Picard could do so much as programme a DVD machine. Sisko, having a kid, probably got said kid to do it for him, as is the way of parents the world over (it took me three years to teach Mum how to use the video recorder!).

That's a good solid reason, Octavia. I think that's part of what appealed to me about the Sisko - he was clearly a builder, an engineer. So it was nice to see him having risen from that. If I had my druthers, I'd have become an engineer myself. But then the only lead captain I particularly find lacking is Archer so it's hard for me to pick.
^I considered engineering, but went into plant science instead. Keiko O'Brien was another favourite of mine. You don't see too many botanists on TV!
I loved the idea of a science ship - which was what Voyager really was - with a scientist at the helm. And I loved that they stopped to investigate nebulas and supernovas that were new and exciting! It's what any geek would do. Much as I love Picard, I'm sure he would have only stopped to watch the same on sufferance.
Science is exciting. Any captain who doesn't get that is ultimately not the captain for me.

Thinking this way, it makes sense that I prefer Picard. He's interested in the "human" sciences--anthropology, archeology. He's a diplomat. It's people that fascinate him.

That does make sense. So I'm primarily a science thinker, and I like Janeway best. Praetor groks building, so he likes Sisko. Teya's into human sciences and she goes for the captain that personifies those.
Am I seeing a trend here?
Anyone else want to chime in, or provide a counter-example?
