BEST CAPTAIN WITH POLL.

Most of the votes for Janeway have more to do with her gender than her mental capabilities. Thus its refreshing to see that someone has a legitimate reason.

WTF? How incredibly insulting.

Many times on this board, the issue of gender discrimination/sexism has been brought up, and shot down immediately. Yet here's another prime example of it.

Many of Janeway's fans are women. I voted for Janeway for a myriad of reasons. I am capable of critical thinking and other higher forms of rational thought. Janeway's importance to me, and I would bet 'most' who like her, is based on more than *just* the fact that she is a woman.

If that is what you are trying to say, I agree with you.

But, if whether or not you see my reasons as 'legitimate' has any relation to her gender, and possibly how it relates to my gender, then I'm insulted.

Yet I've been seeing an increasing number of posts from women claiming that votes *against* Janeway are gender discrimination, that anyone who doesn't claim Janeway's the best is sexist.

You can't have it both ways.

I am a fan of Janeway. I am also a man. I did not vote for her in this poll because I felt that Sisko was a better captain based on the criteria I gave myself to base my decision on. If I could take my vote back, I would probably vote for Picard.

I think it's possible some men (not all) might dislike Janeway just because she's a woman, and that it's just as possible that some women (not all) might like Janeway simply because she's a woman. It's as simple as that.

Now feel free to debate the logic of liking or disliking a character simply because of a personal quality.

As I have understood, it was amazing that DS9 had seven years, too.

Today isn't April Fool's Day? It's not until next month...

From Memory Alpha:

During part of the production of this season the producers were not sure if DS9 would have a seventh season and were prepared to tie up the series at its conclusion. However, DS9 had always been assured that it would have at least six seasons.

So I guess it wasn't all blue skies in the DS9 camp either.

All the actors were signed for 6 years, so that had a lot to do with it (IIRC, they were signed before they knew that TNG would last 7). Both DS9 and Voyager lost ratings, but Voyager was probably the safer show, since it was one of the main shows for UPN when it was just coming out.

Where have all these Sisko "fans" come from" Has anyone checked their ip addresses? ;)

BTW, for those who don't know that was just a joke...

that was a misguided attempt to lure in new viewers because it was a prequel...

Sisko has a 10 point lead over Picard and 11 over Janeway. All is right in the universe...
