Being Human - American remake on SyFy - Season 1 discussion & spoilers

Re: Being Human - American remake on SyFy - Season 1 discussion & spoi

Maybe. It's hard to remember now. I think both Primeval and Being Human are on On Demand, so I'm going to take a look today; maybe they just have a similar appearance.

Well I hope you enjoy it if you give it a try.

Really? Maybe he just looked similar. I could have sworn the young guy was the same one. I'll have to look it up.

There may have been a guest start at one time or another that I'm not remembering, but I don't think so. Russell Tovey and Lenora Crichlow have both been in Doctor Who though.

So has Sinead Keenan (The End Of Time parts 1 & 2).

Thanks. I did like it. I guess I must have thought the guy who plays George was the guy who plays Connor (I think) on Primeval, although it's obvious now that they're not the same.

It was intriguing to see the similarities and differences. The format was similar in some ways, such as the use of the philosophical voice over, but very different in others, such as jumping in with the situation and relationships already established (and even with the ghost character having made so much progress in interacting with the real world). The tone was also rather different, more comic and burlesque; although it did certainly have its share of dramatic moments. I do have to say I like our Werewolf and Ghost better, but I did really like their Vampire. It was also fun to see how specific scenes that were essentially the same-- such as the death of the girl in the alley-- were staged so differently.

Amusingly, BBC America seems to censor little bits like Ghost Girl giving someone the finger and the occasional bare butt.

It looks like Primeval has gone through a lot of changes since I watched last, but I didn't watch all the way through a newer episode.

I'd say Annie and George grow on you as time goes on their characters grow.
As to starting with the relationships established this isn't really true, there was a disregarded pilot episode that set up the whole thing much like the first ep in the US, but they recast Annie and Mitchell along with Herrick and decided to make it non-canon so it's not included as part of the series but the events are pretty much the same.

Mind you, I've only seen the UK series up to about where the US series has gone. The US version is sometimes seen as more emo/whiny but I find the UK version sometimes seems a bit too flippant about their situation.

When the channel started they'd show bare tits so it was pretty annoying when they started going down that path.

^^ Yeah, that's how I took it-- just indicative of British culture-- I liked it fine.

Well, that's very interesting. It's kind of funny, because watching this reminded me of when Channel 56 showed Man About The House a few years ago, which was the original British version of Three's Company. On the Three's Company DVDs is an original pilot with mostly different actors (and even different characters). I love that sort of thing-- "The Cage," the unedited Lost In Space pilot, the original Buffy pilot et cetera. :D I wonder if that original Being Human pilot is on YouTube....

Whenever I see something labeled as "emo" or "cheesy," I translate that to mean it's written for grown ups. :rommie:

That's so ridiculous-- even Turner Classic shows nudity.

I know it can be found online, I acquired it to watch before the series started, not sure the full thing is on youtube though.

Just the opposite. Emo = written to appeal to self-pitying adolescents and those who never grew out of that phase. Cheesy = written with an artificial emotional distance for those who lack the stomach for authentic drama that might cut too close to home and cause discomfort.

It's when a show is written without the crutches of emo-ness or cheesiness that you know it might be written for grownups. Might.

I agree. I'm not sure if you're kidding RJDiogenes. How could emo and cheesy shows be translated as for grown-ups? It's not exclusive but most teen shows on WPIX is what most peope would classify as emo. And cheesy shows=adult? I don't get it.

He never said shows that are emo, he said shows that are labelled emo. Sci-fi fandom especially seems prone to labelling any adult drama as 'emo' probably because so many nerds are also socially and emotionally retarded. :rommie:

Re: Being Human - American remake on SyFy - Season 1 discussion & spoi

^^ Exactly. When I see something labeled "emo" or "cheesy," I can be pretty sure it's for grown ups; when I see "mature" or "edgy," I can be pretty sure it's aimed at Beavis and Butthead. :rommie:

Well, a quick search shows that there are at least parts on YouTube, so I should be able to see the original actors, at least.

Sally still feels strong resentment about her wrongful death and wants to make Danny's life miserable because of what he had done. Coincidentally, she then meets a poltergeist in a club who gives her some ideas. Marcus thinks Rebecca has a hold over Aidan and uses her to manipulate Aidan into coming back. Josh's sister Emily crashes at the apartment for a while, and Josh finally finds the courage to ask a lady out on a date.

Re: Being Human - American remake on SyFy - Season 1 discussion & spoi

What's up with Josh's sister? She's portrayed as a totally different, and unlikeable, character in this episode. :vulcan:

Re: Being Human - American remake on SyFy - Season 1 discussion & spoi

Being Human (SYFY, 9pm)
- 1.390 million viewers
- 0.8/1 HH
- 0.5/1 A18-49

Re: Being Human - American remake on SyFy - Season 1 discussion & spoi

Well, that's a slight improvement. :bolian:

Re: Being Human - American remake on SyFy - Season 1 discussion & spoi

Not sure the sister was all that differently portrayed to be honest.

We'd only seen her briefly before this episode, comforting her partner the hostpital and then dealing with suddenly finding her long lost brother.

When we see her again, she's now dealing with the loss of a romantic relationship, hurt feelings from both the break-up AND the last time she saw her brother and his previous actions, AND doing her best to avoid dealing with any of the emotions involved.

I wouldn't have expected character stability after all of that.

Re: Being Human - American remake on SyFy - Season 1 discussion & spoi

That all makes sense. It just seemed very jarring to me.
