Basics pt 1

What's Janeway gunna do? Deny me beetle stew? Make me trek for alien veggies? "With all do respect ma'am get them yourself. Yeah, didn't think so :-)

That'd play in my head and I'd really say, "Captain something large enough to eat a humanoid lives there. You'll have another set if I go there. I won't risk it. If you were in my place would you? ( she might be nuts enough to)

Yes, somehow. :-)

Thinking about Basics I can't help but think how Hogan died. It might be harder to disobey Janeway but I I'd risk an argument at least to reason. There would be no way I'd go get those bones. If neelix wants he can go fetch.
In what capacity is Neelix giving orders to starfleet officers, anyway?

I wondered too. I believe Hogan was Maquis, an engineering capable one. Neelix was made a scout leader probably due to his talents but he's not a rank officer so I'd deal with the consequence and disobey him.

'waste nothing.' He says.

Well dude, you just wasted a "fine officer."

That and the jealousy factor made me hate him for seasons. He came about though and I was sad he wasn't going to Earth.

Inside an asteroid, what a dismal place to spend the rest of your days in!

These two episodes require exceptional belief-suspension skills.

That said, they ain't bad. Just don't think and stare at the TV and Basics I & II are really entertaining.

Starfleet Officers serve the civilian public.

Neelix and Kes were the only civilian public on Voyager until Naomi was born.

Cops serve the civilian public too but that won't keep them from arresting you or beating the crap out of you (or worse) if you resist arrest. There is a difference between serving and obeying to.

The ratio is upsidedown.

There is not enough public to serve. There is no public to serve. They are very sad that their serving muscles are atrophying. Neelix and Kes are, ridiculously as good as it gets.

In (one version of) Bizarro Comics, on the Bizzarro home world there was one Bizarro Clark Kent and 4 billion Bizarro Supermen who all wanted to rescue Bizarro Clark Kent from whatever trouble he may or might not have been in that day.

(Bizzaro Clark Kent eventually deicded to destroy the (Bizarro)world becuase he was sick of all the bizarro Supermen trying to save him, even though he was more often than not, in no danger at all.)

That reminds me of a parody I saw about a bunch of supermen (it was a French author so you likely never saw it) trying to get a can of coke out of a vending machine but they couldn't because their powers got in the way. So there comes a guy who puts a coin in it and gets his can without problem.
So one of the supermen asks. Who's that guy? Don't you recognize him? It's NORMAL MAN! ...

Given a couple of months, Tuvok would have made a makeshift replicator using only Rocks, pieces of wood and some dirt...
 MacGyver in space.

How the Hell does one make bows and arrows without at least a knife? And how does one make a knife without hours upon hours of flint-stone carving? It's nearly impossible to properly carve a stone the way the cavemen did it without either months of hit and miss or being trained by a master. Many an archaeologist has demonstrated that.

And why did CGI monster one and monster two just slumber and chew if one got close in the caves when it was all you can eat buffet? Is it like that movie with Vin diesel and they burn in the sun? :-)

I still like this dumb episode. It holds a spot in my heart. (When you stop thinking)

Were there two CGI monsters? For some reason, I thought it was the same one, like the Minotaur in his labyrinth... but I suppose two make more sense.

I wonder how they determined that the vegetables they got were even non toxic, never mind edible. In the past, before the invention of technology the only practical way was to sacrifice an animal by force-feeding it the stuff and wait a few hours to see if it gets sick or dies.

Who volunteered to play guinea pigs here?

They could have had a great redshirt moment in the episode

Which make me understand why Starfleet changed the uniforms in the 24th century, changing command to red and black and science/security to yellow and black. Starfleet personel discovered that the red shirts were cursed and it started to be impossible to find crewmembers who wanted to join the security staff.

As for Basics, its' one of my top 5 favorite episodes (part 1 and 2 together). I remember watching it the first time. I had to wait for six months before I got the opportunity to watch part 2. That was six long months!

As for Janeway's decision to take the risk of going into a Kazon trap, well if I had been the captain, I don't think that I would have taken that chance.

Note that in part 1, you get a look at the CGI monster, as if to say, "look what's waiting for them..."
