Arrow - The Final Season

I don't think it's happening, but I really wish this season would focus on Oliver and Diggle Earth hopping.
According to this interview with IGN the first episode is the only one that takes place on a different Earth. Oliver and Diggle will spend most of the rest of the build up to Crisis on Infinite Earths outside of Star City, but they will still be on Earth One.
I saw a Tweet from Stephen Amell, where he said this season is a love letter to the fans. At least this love letter seems like it'll be better than Star Trek's Valentine to it's fans.

that remains to be seen. There’s only 8 episodes left if you take out the crossover.

IDK - ST: D's "If Memory Serves" was an EXCELLENT Valentine to Star Trek (TOS) fans; and it's the ONLY Star Trek "valentine" I will acknowledge. ;)

Yeah, it's probably best for everybody if we just forget that other "Valentine" ever happened.

It's still really weird to have the Arrow cast dealing with all this sci-fi multiversal cosmic-threat stuff alongside all the street fights with drug lords and gun-toting thugs. Even Diggle's reached the point of talking about the multiverse like it's no big deal. And it's weird to discover that there's some random guy in Hong Kong who has the tech to scan for parallel Earths and repair breach extrapolators. That always seemed to be proprietary STAR Labs tech before, though I guess he could've pirated it somehow.

Also, this is the closest we've ever come to seeing how they set and target those dang things. It's always seemed to be just "wish and it will happen" before, but now it looks like there's a dial on the central crystal for setting a target Earth. That doesn't explain how you determine where on that Earth you want to end up, though.

It's a bit clumsy how they're trying to integrate the Crisis storyline with their victory lap of Oliver's past for their final season. Oliver wants to find out about the Monitor? Well, he could just call STAR Labs and ask if the Council of Wells knows anything, or he could visit Earth-38 and ask if the DEO or J'onn have any information, right? No, it turns out the League of Assassins somehow knows about him. How conveeeeenient.

Another way the Arrow and Crisis storylines are a clumsy fit: It's awkward to say "Oh, no, we only have until December 2019 to save the multiverse from total annihilation" and then cut to flashforwards set in 2040.

But that was a startling twist at the end, for all that it's been implicit ever since Lyla Michaels was introduced and given the ARGUS code name Harbinger. When we saw that publicity photo of Lyla as Harbinger recently, I figured maybe it would be a doppelganger, like how Pariah is another Wells doppelganger. But it looks like she's been a sleeper agent all along. Mar Novu must have had plans for Oliver from the start. I wonder how Diggle will feel when he finds out. Could the resultant family strife be a factor in why John Jr. goes bad in the future?

Makes you wonder if Lyla was always aware of losing her daughter Sarah do to Flashpoint? If there was more to that than we were let to believe.

The flash forwards are way out of place. They are hoping to appeal to casual fans who are returning for the end. But all that is confusing if you missed last season.

It also kind of deflates the whole Crisis aspect of the Crisis in that - "Hey look 21 years later the world is fine..."

Before last night I would have agreed with you about the 2040 stuff not really fitting the narrative (even though I enjoy it). However, some of what J.J. said makes me wonder if they intend to tie the 2040 stuff to Crisis. I think if pretty evident something is going to happen to his mother, even if they don't follow the Harbinger story from the comics exactly.

I have to admit, I hadn't really thought about the 2040 flash forwards in relation to the stuff about the Crisis. That is a bit odd, although it looks like something will tie the 2040 stuff into the crisis since
we know Mia ends up in the present
.
I did enjoy revisiting Tatsu and China White again, even if it is a bit odd that they would just happen to tie Oliver's mission for The Monitor.
Our Lyla working for The Monitor was a big surprise, like @Christopher, I had been assuming the Harbinger connected to him would be a doppelganger.

I am also surprised Lyla is Harbringer and not a doppelgänger.
But knowing it now I think I can guess the writers’ reasoning.

Arrow is ending. No reason to maintain the status quo of old. In terms of Lyla herself or that Arrow is at all grounded in reality. Bigger reason is Crisis is going to be introducing so many new characters to the Arrrowverse as it. It is merely simpler to add to Lyla herself and give her a bigger role. Than sideline her for the Crossover and introduce a new doppelgänger.

That's Harbinger. As in someone watching a whole season of Har straight through. Har binger. ;)

That makes sense.

Also, presumably they want big surprises and payoffs, and dramatic sendoffs for the main characters. So putting Lyla in a critical (pun intended) role in Crisis achieves that for her.

I've been a little confused about the time framing of Arrow this season. Didn't the finale jump forward a few months last year, so technically they are a few months ahead of everyone else. If The Flash is taking place in October, shouldn't Arrow present day be taking place after Crisis or did Oliver jump back in time. And if Oliver jumped back in time, will he meet his self in one of these episodes? I'm really fascinated (As a non-comic book reader) as to this forward momentum to Crisis, but I'm getting a little confused by it all.

As for the episode last night, it was nice to see China White again. I forgot about Tatsu, but she was a 3rd season character. I'm really looking forward to seeing Thea again next week.

Current events are supposed to be concurrent-ish with The Flash.

It's been over 4 months between episodes, so the ending of last season of Arrow, even with the unspecified length of the time lapse, could have easily happened before the start of this season of The Flash. Best not to overthink it though.

Well in the original Crisis it happened at all times simultaneously. So everyone from Anthro the first boy to Kamandi the last boy to the Legion of Superheroes experienced it. The Monitor collected heroes ( and even some villains) from all of time to fight it.

It looks like there's a chance that might happen here too since
Mia Smoak and Jonah Hex will both be involved in the Crisis
.
