Are you there God? It's me, Dean Winchester

It's not referencing The Venture Brothers.

They're both referencing Are You There God? It's Me Margaret by Judy Blume. Your girlfriend was right.

I wouldn't be suprised if the Venture Brothers usage triggered this though. Seems too suspicious to be completely coincidental.

Not really. I've seen references to the title since I was a kid. If you have Firefox 3, type "are you there god it's me," and you get a huge dropdown of choices.

Hell, since posting the link this afternoon, I went to the bookstore and spotted a copy of Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler.

It's a common enough reference that it's actually getting kind of passé.

True, but a couple things strike me as odd. One this kind of title is a bit odd for Supernatural at least from what I remember. Second, it seems odd to use "Dean Winchester" instead of just Dean (like if referencing "Margaret") as if to seperate itself from the Venture Bros. usage.

Mind you, I'm not saying at all that I'm right, just as I said I wouldn't be surprised if it was influenced by the writer seeing the other title and having a light bulb moment. Or he is referencing an oft-referenced title as you say.

watched it on tape... Definitely loving this season and the arc. Apocalypse indeed.

Castiel kind of rocks. I really like the way the guy is so hard-nosed. God's army indeed. He must be like a friggin special forces op or something lol

The one thing I wonder is on what field are they fighting? and who were they fighting that 5 or 6 I forget what he said other angels died? It seemed like Lilith was afraid of him... So are they demons on the Earth stronger then Lilith?

I wonder if the whole God/Angel thing is that they can't actually fight the corporeal fight. They can have proxies (humans) fight for them, but their powers are such that they warp reality or something so if a demon is in a human skin it's basically a human problem to deal with.

oh and the opening rocked. Supernatural's musical choices are awesome (as usual)

I think the angels are fighting on a supernatural plane of existence. That's why they need some mortals to do the fighting on Earth. Worthy mortals.

I doubt the seals are on another plane of existence. It really seems to me that he tapped Dean for a purpose. Perhaps there's a seal that can only be broken by an honest man who returned from Hell... or something along those lines. Cassiel could simply be trying to earn Dean's trust so as to dupe him into breaking what ends up being the final seal.

Just a working theory. I was suspicious of Cassiel the moment he said his host prayed to be possessed by a warrior angel of God. Who prays for that? "Dear God, please send an angel to take over my body and mind so that my body may be blessed with gunshots and stab wounds. Amen."

It could have been a man who prayed to be filled with the spirit of God, so that he may do God's work.

To a warrior angel, sounds close enough.

I had never heard of her until this thread.

Now you know. And knowing is half the battle!

GEE-AI JOE!

Sorry, it just ticks me off sometimes that people can't be bothered to check out literary references. I was thinking about this during Heroes last week when yet another science fiction series pulls a title from Yeats; it was kind of neat when the poem was quoted in its (or almost in its) entirety.

Supernatural has easily become my favorite mind candy series. The acting is great, the suspense is perfectly timed, and it keeps me guessing.

I loved seeing Meg again, as well.

How I wish they could get Nicki Aycox back permanently. Supernatural really has some great acting, doesn't it? THe fact that they keep losing their guest stars when they want to invite them back for recurring roles is proof of that. Charles Malik Whitfield (Henricksen) has booked two films. Could only come back for one ep this season. Sterling Brown was cast in Army Wives, so he could only come back for two eps last season instead of the six they wanted him for. Loretta Devine (Missouri) went on to Broadway. Couldn't come back. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has worked non stop, can barely get him back. They're lucky they could get Jim Beaver back as much as they have. He works constantly on different series.
